Xbox One System Update: More Social Features and New Ways to Watch TV Available for Preview Members

Today Microsoft is rolling out several of the new social and entertainment features they shared earlier this week at GamesCom in Cologne, in addition to a few unannounced features, to the members previewing new system updates. User input on feedback.xbox.com plays a big role in shaping these updates, which will roll out to all Xbox One owners in the coming months.

What's so great about this? I have an xbox one, what does it mean to me? I see everyone is excited but I don't know what to use it for - help?!

This update is really about multi-media enthusiasts that have their own media servers, DLNA devices, and use the XB as a TV device.

If you do, this update is huge.

Sayai jin3966d ago

Awesome! I am a early preview member. I will most def check this out when my Xbox One gets back from repair. :(

donthate3966d ago

Why do we care if your Xbox is under repair. You keep posting that?

That said, love the direction of where Phil Spencer is going. Just hope he doesn't forget the Kinect!

Sayai jin3966d ago (Edited 3966d ago )

Simple, This article was about preview members being able to try out the new features. I would have downloaded the update now, but have to wait.

By your ideology, anyone could use that comment about any comment on this site. Why would someone care what console someone has, what games they will get, and so on.

Sayai jin3966d ago

BTW, where did I ask for anyone to care if it was in for repair?

donthate3966d ago

@saya:

We are very sad your Xbox is under repair, but frankly unless you didn't want us to care, why talk about it?

It is completely irrelevant to the article.

If I wasn't at work, I would try the update! /s

Sayai jin3966d ago (Edited 3966d ago )

@Salty - There was no reason to be rude in your original post, but oh well.

Still using the same logic. So by that logic, why did you mention you were at work and could not try the update? Why would people care if you were at work? What did that have to do with the article? It is completely irrelevant to the article. Not picking, just pointing out the double standard you presented.

Maybe in someone world they look for approval from people on the internet, but I use it for info and conversing, although it's rare on this site to have a meaningful dialogue without ye old Console War debates. Maybe people without a social life looks for approval, caring, etc on the net, but I'm 39 yrs old and couldn't care what people think.

My comment was about the preview. The fact that the features sounds awesome and the fact that I can't download it because of the repair. That's on topic.

On topic, never got to fully try out all the features from the last update. I was waiting for Bluray 3D, capability, but did not see them implement it. The MP3 playback will be a welcome to many. I have two other XB1's in the house (son's and daughter's), but they are not part of the early preview program.

The early update preview program is a smashing success IMO. The updates are frequent, purposeful, include direct fan feedback, etc which lead to a synergistic effort to improve the XB1 and XBL.

Boom! Mind blown!

Should've been shipped with the device TBF

But nonetheless, totes awesome for XB1 owners.

I regularly play albums whilst Im playing a game.
Lobby music across the board for online gaming is pretty pants.

Was one of the best and most used features on my 360. Making playlists etc and adjusting the volume level so you can still hear everyone in the chat party and all ingame sound effects, really added personality the games.

Sooo friggin pumped it's already in beta!

Dat media app...soooo good

ramiuk13966d ago (Edited 3966d ago )

well done MS from a ps4 gamer

Media Player – A new app will be available soon that enables you to play media files from either an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA protocols. The preview version of the Media Player app will initially only support USB devices, with DLNA support coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv which will be added by the end of the year. See below for additional file formats.

matrixman923966d ago (Edited 3966d ago )

It's actually available now. Just plug in a USB and you will be prompted to download the app

LonDonE3966d ago

you mean its available now for preview members righ? and not for general public yet? or is it available for all? please clarify

matrixman923966d ago

yes, preview members. As the article title states, this is all only available for preview members

Eonjay3966d ago

Totally agree. I love the features Sony is adding but I want the legacy support that PS3 had as well.

Now, the only way they can make this better is if they support Streaming, Local and portable storage. So I can store some on the PS4/Xbox One Hard Drive. Other than that I will gladly take DLNA and USB which Microsoft will be providing.

chaosx3966d ago

DLNA works just fine with skifta as a go between , has for a long time. USB will be handy though.

TheCatsMeow3966d ago

This is all wonderfully good news and many awaited features. Can't wait to try this stuff out tomorrow.

Sayai jin3966d ago

Another preview member I see. Unfortunately I can't try this out until my XB1 gets back from MS for repair. :(

Eonjay3966d ago

This is something the PlayStation needs desperately. This is coming to Xbox this fall so sometime very soon. Hopefully Sony steps it up because this is one of my most requested features. Plus its fully featured so Network and USB Media. Obviously its coming to PS4 too, but maybe some competition from Microsoft can hurry things along so I am glad to see this coming.

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny review - Design of the Times | TechStomper

"Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny feels stuck between 2025 and 2002. Not quite enough of the past to be pure nostalgia, and not enough of the present to feel fresh."
