Microsoft to make "spectacular, desperate" play in E3 press conference

VG247: Following talk that Microsoft is to announce two new major games in its E3 press conference, videogaming247 has learnt from trusted sources that the announcements are to be "interesting, partly spectacular and a bit desperate."

all companies lie to sell product.when i hear some ps3 fans saying that sony doesn't lie and they care about them, it makes me laugh.they alway talk about microsoft and how the 360 breaks and i agree with that but to say that sony cares more about their customers then microsoft is laughable.

when sony released the ps1 and 2 they both had a lot of problems with them, especially the ps2 with the drive they put in it.when you put a game in the ps2 it would say can't read disc even when it was a new system and after a few month it would say can't read disc %95 of the time. sony knew that something was wrong with the drive in the ps2 but lied and said that nothing was wrong with them because they didn't want to pay to fix them.it took a lawsuit for sony to finaly admit that the ps had defected drives in them and they knew it all alone but didn't want to pay for their mistakes and they got away with it.sony finally fixed the drives in the new systems that they released to sell but for people like me that went through 5 of them in about a year and a half was just stuck with them because sony didn't give us an extra couple of months on the warrinty.i'm not saying that microsoft does every thing better then sony because it's not true and vice versa but atleast microsoft gave everyone a 3 year warrinty when the 360 started haveing problems and unlike sony microsoft didn't have to get sued to fix it like sony did.sony and microsoft only cares about makeing money and like i said they will lie to do it as a matter of fact both companies did already.

if people want to play all the great games that they have out they will need both systems.i tired of hearing fans from both systems saying that all the games sux on the other system because if the same games that they say sux was on the system that they have they would say that they are great games.

Microsoft won the browser war against netscape because it was better... and now microsoft is losing it to firefox because firefox are doing a good job... same goes with google... who's fault is that?

I find it interesting that when microsoft comes with a product people are willing to pay... it's a monopoly but when another company does no one says anything... why is that? there is an alternative to every product you can think of.. just because I buy a Honda over Ford does not mean Honda has a monopoly... also just because a company has more resources than me and can make a better product does not mean that's a monopoly.

But M$ does have a monopoly on PC OS's. The competition they have is Linux, which is free and not particularily user friendly for the avg consumer, or Apple's OS, which you can't install on anything except a PC made by apple which is usually double the cost of a PC. So if you want a PC OS that is easy to use you have one option and that is Windows. Every PC manufacturer includes uses Windows and includes it in the cost of the PC. This is also by far their most profitable division.

But it really doesn't matter. You can't walk into ANY store and ask for a PC w/ a mac OS on it. I don't even know of any that have Linux on there. That means if you go buy a non-apple PC, M$ is getting some of that money because the OS is pre-installed on it. before you go spouting off a conviction on someone's intelligence, try and learn some grammar and debating skills...secondly, this isn't about nationality or some cultural pissing match. It's E3, calm down. I am American, I'm not dumb, I learn very well, and I buy whatever works well, regardless of global orgin. I feel 360 has an amazing lineup with some sketchy hardware, and the PS3 has awesome hardware and features with some killer apps and prospects as well, and the Wii has a novel idea and a few brilliant games. Between the two of 360 and PS3 though, I say flip a coin and enjoy the result, because there's no reason to reject a certain product due to it's manufacturer's base country, the same way I don't discriminate against a person just because they come from country X or Y.

I'm still trying to figure out how something could be spectacular and desperate at the same time lol. In past experiences if anything truely desperate turned out to be spectacular it was sort of a lucky thing. But hey, I was happy with the line up before now so anything new and possibly "spectacular" is great. Not that i can really afford much more after buying my new samsung 40 inch. I do not understand why so much hate for Microsoft. Every time something happens in the game industry with Microsoft all I see is “ooo I bet they paid a lot of money for this and for that.” But when Sony has to announce something it is because they are Sony and not because they have money. This is a business people and it is not Microsoft’s fault they have money to burn and others do not. I am new to this site and in the past few days all I have read is people going back and fourth about my system is better then yours. My question is will it matter who is in First, Second or even third place this Gen. To me I would have to say no as I will still get great games from the Big Three. I will be picking up MGS4 today and I can not wait for GeoW 2. I do not see Microsoft’s announcement as desperate but more as “Hey more games to play later on this year.” When Sony is ready to announce their games at E3 I will also be up front and ready to play as I am a Gamer and I plays games not systems.

In many ways I agree with you mate - theres certainly too much company loyalty on display in here and not enough pure game love!

But with regard to the specifics of MS 'buying' something, that's almost forgivable, as the company has a history of simply buying its way into any market it wants and then using its considerable muscle to destroy any competition. Its the reason they have lost so many anti-trust law suits in the U.S. Asia and Europe. Anyone who knows about coorporate history knows that MS are more guilty of this than any other company, so though it fuels stupid assertions and fan boy stpidity, its not difficult to see where it comes from! :)

As for what this article refers to - it must be the motion controller. I KNOW it exists, and there was completely playable stuff for it at the end of last year, so it must be launched soon. Videogaming 247 are not at all critical of MS (indeed, I think they are often extrememly supportive), so they would not describe anything else other than the motion add on as 'desperate'.

I have noticed recently that there is a slow influx of true gamers or at least logically minded people that are starting to come to this site. Hopefully their voice is not drowned out by the fanboy rhetoric. Great post my friend. A lot of things that go on about this site makes you question if these fanboys have stock interest in these companies, then i would understand their fanaticism, but unfortunately from some of the responses you can see that they are just mere children that enjoy themselves in a pissing contest.

But there are some good people on here who are truly capable of great discussions, don't let the fanboys frustrate you, it'll soon get easy for you to drown them out and find some truly respectable people to have discussions with on this site.

As far as the title is concerned, i don't understand why they would say that. I mean i thought the 360 was doing well, still selling the most games, and is #2 worldwide. Second place does not seem that bad when you are #1 in selling games, and as we all know, the profit is in the game sales and it makes developers want to bring games to your system. MS is doing great this time around, and they keep making it hard for me to save money. I don't know how people can say MS and desperate in the same sentence. If Microsoft wants to spend money to invest in a game so that they can provide a better experience for their customers (though it is something they make money on) where is the problem with that?

It is well within their power, and honestly, they'd be stupid not to try and provide a better experience than the competition, because if they didn't, they would be indistinguishable.

Honestly, Microsoft being willing to pay for exclusives and putting lots of money into first party development makes them a great gaming company. Their customers have invested in them, so they reinvest in the customers hoping to continue the circle and make more money which they can use to make their lineup even greater.

When Sony came out and claimed that they would never pay for exclusives, it really only showed how stuck up they were. Instead of "we'll spend money to make the experience for our customers better" we get the "meh, we're better than Microsoft, we're too good for developers."

When I hear that their "could" be a couple more 360 exclusives I basically jump up and down with joy... Same as I did a week or so ago when I heard their are a coupld up-coming major hitters coming for the PS3...

I doubt Microsoft would sound desperate. They pay good money for reps who could sound confident no matter what they're telling you.
I'm looking foward to E3, but judging by the last few E3s, they'll probably just tell us more about the games we already know about, announce a couple of small new titles, run of some sales and download figures and finish up with gameplay footage of Gears 2, which would be welcomed but wouldn't show much.
I want to see some Fable 2 and Gears 2 gameplay, though, i'm particularly interested in Fable 2. Co-op just sounds brill.

The source says the titles are focused at a MS perceived shortfall in Q4 this year for the "core" market. Looking at Sony's announced E3 list, I'm guessing that refers to Resistance 2 and Motorstorm 2 because MS doesn't have any first party FPS or Racer announced that could compete.

So based on MGS history

FPS/Shooter: Halo Chronicles, Huxley, Brute Force 2, Conker, Perfect Dark, "Newton" shooter.
Racer: Forza 3, PGR 5, an unnamed Turn 10 project.

I know Lips, Ninja Blade and Scene It 2 all mysteriously disappeared from their recent showcase, but I would certainly laugh if Scene It 2 was to be unveiled as a "big" title.

My money for spectacular is still on Alan Wake, Forza 3 or Halo Chronicles. Interesting goes to the "Newton" controller, Rare's involvement and any titles. And a bit desperate would have to be "Newton" casual titles or a B-grade FPS.

Only five weeks to go...

Personally Alan Wake and Forza 3 would do me plenty. :)

This is pure speculation and wishfull thinking on ny part but you know that techland have been very quite this year on Warhound and as of last year they did not have a publisher for the game on the 360.

What if Microsoft publishes the title?They could show it at E3 and could release it as a sort of Killzone 2 rival for spring next year.It really looked promising from a technicall and graphics stand point.

But as i said it's pure speculation.

That's another title I hadn't thought of!

But to be honest I like the fact MS is stretching beyond the FPS and into other genres. This year's lineup is incredibly broad compared to previous years (only one shooter!) and when you take in the third party exclusives the amount of Strategy, Adventure and RPG titles is very impressive.

If they release the Newton with a games pack, and announce Alan Wake and Forza 3 it'll be a perfectly balanced portfolio for Q4. Halo: Chronicles, which has been ramping up development the last three months would be icing on a very tasty cake. :)

Yeah I'm all covered with FPS and I'd suggest so is Xbox Live. Halo 3 and COD4 are all you need according to Major Nelson's activity charts and Bad Company/Rainbow Six might be a decent distraction. But those four have got me sorted on the FPS front.

Gears 2 will be all the shooting I need at the end of this year if early indications are anything to go by it'll keep my killing urges satisfied. lol

Lost Odyssey is great (pity bout your 4th disc?!) and is personally the best JRPG experience I've had this gen. Cry On and Infinite Undiscovery look fantastic.

But my highest personal hopes are for Too Human from Silicon Knights whom hold a special place in my heart and to a slighter extent Lionhead (Fable 2)and Rare (Banjo 3). Can't wait :)

I think one of those secret games on MS's part might be Killer Instinct 3. I hope it is because I would get that in a heartbeat. I only played Killer Instinct 1 when I was younger. My brother had the SNES version and I had the gameboy version. Kick ass fighting game especially.

here are 2 reasons some people might dislike sony this-gen:

1. the arrogant posturing "next-gen doesn't start until we say so". I think that was said @ E3 right near the 360's launch. they seemed to think that they would win the next console war on name and name alone, despite some impressive innovations from their competitors. they were really being d1cks.

2. some people just prefer to 'root for the underdog' as they say. sony was probably expected to dominate again; at least until a little further in the game. for some of us, it's too boring when the one with the advantage always wins!

and yes I would group myself with both the annoyed and underdog-worshipping. I try and make sure I don't go the other way and blindly support microsoft. I won't become the thing I hate!

that said, I think sony def got knocked down a few pegs in 2006-2007, and they prob deserved it. but they came back to E3 humbler and wiser for it. I don't know if we'd have gotten some of the great things for PS3 if sony hadn't needed to save some face.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again----you get what you pay for. And Live isnt expensive at all. Hell can get a 13 month subscription that comes with a free Arcade game, MS Points, and Headset or Camera for the price of ONE game.

I am really hoping for Four Horseman of Apocalypse. I believe it will come out for X360 and Games for Windows. I have been talking with the owners of "Four Horsemen Entertainment" who own the ip and that is the general direction he was telling me. A small company that already has a lot of the game already done and with Microsoft Games Studios publishing the game, they get to have MS pay the bill and have it on 2 systems. I see that most of the comments here suggest doing something with the Halo franchise that puts it into more mainstream hands. I tend to agree that MSFT needs to do something like this. Halo is MSFT's brand recognition, and while 2 and 3 each sold 8m+ copies, they were 8m+ copies to the hardcore crowd.

Nintendo can sell 10m copies of Mario games because hardcore and mainstream alike will pick it up.

I think if they're holding off on two announcements that will help them in 4Q2008, then they will be targeted at the mainstream. They already have Fable 2 and GeoW2 for the hardcore in 4Q... I would wager that they're not sure that Banjo and Viva Pinata can cut the mustard and help push consoles.

Let's face it: the people who are going to play the hardcore titles already have a 360.

I will be surprised if MSFT doesn't drop the price at least another $50 before or around E3. Then I believe these two "secret" announcements will be related to some way to sell their main franchise (Halo) to the mainstream market... and therefore push more consoles out the door.

Back when I had halo3 there was a playlist that was a race. Teams of two would get on the mongoose and one would have a rocket launcher. The shields were unlimited so you couldnt die. The objective was to get the most points by being the first to the checkpoint, which would then reapear somewhere. The driver goes to the checkpoint whe the rider shoots rockets to knock the other mongooses(mongeese?) away from the checkpoint. If they made a halo racing game I think Id be pissed when I couldent get out and shoot stuff.

To be honest im really hoping they resurrect a popular but half forgotten IP (something like Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, KotOR, Skies of Arcadia, Gunstar Heores, Earthworm Jim or Powerstone) or have an (at least timed)exclusive sequal like Half Life 3 or Bioshock 2.
Though if reality wasnt an issue to have them show a brand new high def, hand-drawn sprite filled game of Streets of Rage 4 would be the best thing ever for me. Yeah the game play would be seen as repetitive , but it sure would be fun!
I really think that, what with the PS3 gaining momentum with both GT5p and MGS4 being released, Microsoft need something truely jaw dropping. Something that will just make gamers go "THAT IS AWESOME".
