Edge preview: Killzone 2

Guerrilla says that Killzone 2 is living up to impossibly high expectations, but it's hard not to feel that the game is short on ideas that it can call its own.

xg-ei8ht6222d ago

You'll never play it again, i've said that so many times about old games. One day maybe:)

Yeah this will be awesome.

Day one Purchase/.

clintos596222d ago

Any game that is ps3 exclusive can be guaranteed to be low scored from edge and eurogamer. So im not even going to waste my time reading the preview.
These guys and eurogamer said a good preview about MGS4 and then gave the game an 8, with lousy facts to lower the score and on top of that they gave halo 3 a 10. Sorry but the credability from this site and eurogamer and gamespot are all lousy and are biased against ps3 games. Even if u gave uncharted a good score, MGS4 is a way better game then uncharted period. Thats all I gotta say now go preview somewhere else because anything good coming from these sites is all halo fanatics.

uehc6222d ago

I agree, you can sense their bitterness in this article. I've never seen a preview about a game written so coldly in this manner before. They're being a bit unfair.

Fishy Fingers6222d ago

Edge, are harsh and always objective, but I don't believe they have any bias toward any of the platforms. If they have a different opinion to you that doesnt matter, as it is only opinion, nothing more.

1stKnighT6222d ago

And the excuses continues...

Euphrate6222d ago (Edited 6222d ago )

Gave :

Bioshock ( Game of the Year ) 8/10
Gears of War ( Game of the year nominee 8/10 )
Metal Gear Solid 4 ( Definitely Game of This year ) 8/10
HALO 3 10/10

HALO

3

Is 8/10 - their 10/10?

So, if Killzone gets a 8/10 ( which it will ) it's actually a compliment?

HALO 3...

Veryangryxbot6222d ago (Edited 6222d ago )

Agreed. I, too, find it pretty unfair how they labelled KZ2 as a “stealer of ideas”. I wonder, why do these fools expect Guerilla to reinvent the wheel? Halo didn’t. And yet it got a 10 from them? But KZ is bashed to insane heights?
The way I see it, KZ2 is borrowing concepts but borrowing the BEST and established concepts. That’s a GOOD THING. Not a BAD thing.
And from my objective point of view I actually see KZ2 do something no other game has before. Its packaging the best things of all games into one package. Something no other game, barred MGS4, has done before.
When is the last time, you have seen the graphics of uncharted upped a notch, the details of MGS4, the lighting of GTA4, the incredible textures, the size of the game, the war torn atmosphere, the animations of Uncharted, the incredible models, the destructible environments etc all in one package?
Oh ya, only on PS3.
Halo 3 showed CGI footage but somehow noone expected that game to look like that and no points or reviews bashed Halo for it. KZ2 showed CGI footage over 3 years ago and to this very day, everyone of the press expects KZ2 to look just like that or else…
And now that KZ2 DOES look like CGI quality, they just find other things to bash the game.
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see how this game is unfairly treated. But these people also gave MGS4 an 8 and that actually is enough said: they have no credibility whatsoever.

LaChance6222d ago (Edited 6222d ago )

Who cant be believe that the sequel to the mediocre Killzone on PS2 isnt the best game in the universe.

EDGE gave a 8/10 to Bioshock (360 exclusive at that time) and 8/10 to Geow (360 exclusive).

I perossonally didnt see ONE SINGLE 360 fanboy complain about how EDGE are biaised.

Didnt see a single conspiracy theory come out of a 360 fanboys mouth.

You guys are starting to look more and more like a huge JOKE.

EDGE are harsh , thats all.I dont think alot of gamers pay attention to their reviews simply because they dont seem to have the same demands as normal gamers (HOW ON PLANET EARTH CAN YOU GIVE BIOSHOCK an 8/10 ?)

Stop whining.

edit : @clintos below : I hope you saw that I said we shouldnt really take EDGE into account because they simply dont review games like others. They seem incosistant to me.

Yuore talking about MGS4 and KZ2 (innovation bla bla bla) but I can say exactly the same thing for a 360 exclsives like Geow or Bioshock.
Halo 3 is a special case just like GTA4.The hype around those games are are INSANE hence the overrated reviews. But MGS4 or Geow etc are not as important as Halo or GTA (Im talking about hype , the money involved etc).

EDGE arnt biaised : if you take away Halo 3 can you please give me an example of EDGE being biaised ? I bet you cant cuz they give 8/10 even to 360 AAA exclusives.

If they give Res 2 a 9/10 what are you going to say ?

They gave Uncharted, R and Clank and UT3 very good scores.I guess they turned into lousy reviewers when they got MGS4 , right ?

clintos596222d ago

Maybe if u opened your eyes u would understand that when u see 28 reviews out of 30 giving MGS4 AAA and AAAA scores, its not hard to see which game sites u can believe. U can sit here and say dont whine about a game but hey this is one of the greatest franchise games in gaming history and one of my favorite series. For these guys to say, "Where is the Innovation for Killzone 2" just shows u how hypocrite they can be with that statement just for the fact of my example of how they reviewed Halo 3. If u can prove me wrong that Halo 3 was innovative and deserved a 10, then ill shut up, but since I know u cant, it doesnt take a blind person to see that edge, eurogamer, and gamespot are lousy reviewers.

Superfragilistic6222d ago (Edited 6222d ago )

An opinion is only worth as much as the value you place on it.

EDGE are notoriously harsh and have a tendency to reward innovation over story or pretty graphics. But then only people who read their critiques would understand and value that, as opposed to fanboys who just look at the scores or choice quotes. :)

crck6222d ago

They gave God of War 2 a 7. They obviously don't share my viewpoint on games so why should I give a crap about what they think.

TruthBTold6221d ago

there will be little to nothing where reviewers can hype the game based on what the developers say. If anything whatever good thing is said will mostlikely seem fair cause they wont be able to depend on others peoples opinion to make their own. Let the gamers decide how good the game is and that will be the perfect hype for the game. I am excited about this game but dont want people to overhype it cause it ruins the experience when reading about it. Keep it realistic.

jtucker786222d ago

I'm slightly worried about the "reviving your team" mechanic.
This dynamic has ruined many a great game and not so great (Clive Barker's Jericho anyone?)

I think the game is shaping up well, but I don't want to spend too much time running back and forth trying to revive my teammates.
That would be a major ball4che.

Mr_President_6222d ago

Same. It all depends on how much time they put into developing the team AI. As long as any your squadmates don't decide to play hero and take out a whole group solo, it should be fine.

Fishy Fingers6222d ago

Squad actions are dependent on your actions, if you help out a certain member of your team they in return will make a "real" effort to help you when your next in a spot of trouble.
The less assistance you give to them, expect that back.

Usually the use of a squad such as in KZ2 is to easily allow co-op play, it's much easier from the developer point of view to "simply" allow you to control one of the NPC squad mates while in co-op.

NiraTum6222d ago

no offense but gray pallete???

i guess to make edge and eurogamer and probably 1up happy we need to put a rainbow war to make they happy...

but is edge, so what else can be expected...

sorry for my english is a little rusty...

Veryangryxbot6222d ago (Edited 6222d ago )

Changing the color models is a matter of pressing the left pad of their mouse.

The colors of a game, is a choice of the developers. The artistic design was a choice they made. It has nothing to do with being incapable of portraying more colors. It has to do with style and artistic design. This game is trying to portray a grim, war torn feeling. You dont use pink for that.

MisfitSmurf6222d ago

complaining about how killzone is gray is like complaining how gears is brown :/ both games still look good either way

Kleptic6221d ago

totally agree with both of you...I know PS3 fans attatcked Gears for being relatively grim color wise, but I found it awesome...their is something ridiculous about having lots of grey muted colors and then splattering gorgeously rendered blood all over it...while Gears didn't have affective blood decaling (the awesome splatter didn't stick to walls...it only had a really lame looking puddle form)...Killzone 2 takes that to a new level (blood flowing down hills and pooling in cracks in the ground, and splatter realistically staining surfaces) all look as awesome as ever...

I know I sound homicidal most likely...but its a shooter...I don't want pink and purple everywhere...I don't want giggling little idiot purple aliens coming up to me and then running away aimlessly...whining about Killzone 2 having too many buildings made out of concrete, or sheet metal aircraft hangars is blatantly ignorant...you wanna see color in Killzone 2?...stare at the sky, it looks like a ridiculously awesome painting...

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro241d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken241d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown241d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72241d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken241d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya241d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast241d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood241d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro470d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72470d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_470d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga470d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos470d ago (Edited 470d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23470d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000470d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin470d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole470d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix470d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989470d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor470d ago (Edited 470d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

470d ago
Michiel1989470d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor774d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar774d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg774d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149774d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138774d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim774d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC774d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138774d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle774d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76774d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger774d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca774d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain774d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright774d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
