What Are Chiptunes?

Anyone who grew up with a NES or the Sega Genesis will remember the wonderful, albeit simple, music that accompanied some of the most memorable games of all time. The familiar "Legend of Zelda" tune, and the iconic "Mario Brothers" songs are among the most well recalled. These are recognized, retrospectively, as 'Chiptunes.' But what exactly is a Chiptune?
