Download Torrents With the PS3

**WARNING**
I, nor PS3mods.com condone downloading of illegal media. Please use with caution and intelligence.
*******************************

"ken_vs_ryu" at ps3mods.blogspot.com has found a way to download torrent files directly to the PS3 without using a client.

"Here are the instructions on downloading torrents directly to the PS3 via TorrentRelay.com.

1. Find torrent link.
* hint: mininova links are easy to memorize.
2. Copy .torrent link *for example:www.mininoa.org/get/########
3. Go to http://torrentrelay.com
4. Click on 2nd input box with [Get URL] next to it. Type in the link from step #2.
5. Click on [Get URL].
6. # Click on the file you want. It will list all the files available on the torrent.
7. Save As dialog should pop up.
8. We only tried an mp3 and it was downloaded directly into the Music folder.

This really isn't good for the torrent community since the PS3 cannot seed files but it's interesting that it's possible.

What I am still shocked about is the ps3 is 1 year and 8 months old now or 7, something like that, and there is not no hint or sign of an emulator for the system without installing the cumbersom linux. That is shocking with the webbrowser and all you'd think the ps3 would've been cracked 1 week out from launch.

Cell has 3 layers being run at any given moment. Developers and gamers have access to Level 2, SCE has access to Level 1, and No One (and I mean no one) can access Level 0. Cell has built-in security thanks to DMA.

RSX has some kind of protection as well; Linux users are blocked off from RSX usage, though if you look it up a few people have gotten basic hacks working on the GPU.

GutZ315957d ago (Edited 5957d ago )

Watch this thread get barred because the word torrent and ps3 some how mean pirated media.

Torrents are used for legal media to if you have forgotten.

ProblemSolver5957d ago (Edited 5957d ago )

Yeah, the Cell/B.E. processor/architecture was built with security in mind,
straight from the metal, to support not only games but also a lot of other
applications (finance, transcoding, ...).

The security of the Cell/B.E. reads as follows;
"..., the Cell BE security architecture offers three core features. By using
the hardware Secure Processing Vault feature, an application can execute
isolated from the rest of the software environment. With the Runtime
Secure Boot feature, an application can run a check on itself before it is
executed to verify that it hasnot be modified and compromised. If a
modification in the application is detected, the application execution can
be stopped. Secure Boot is normally done only at power-on time, but the
Cell BE processor can Secure Boot an application thread multiple times
during runtime. And finally, with the Hardware Root of Secrecy feature,
unlocking of secrets such as various keys can be protected using the
robustness of hardware. A fourth feature, a hardware random number
generator, is also relevant to some security issues. The following section
gives a brief overview of the Cell BE architecture so you can better see
the framework in which these features are provided." -- Kanna Shimizu,
Security Architect, IBM Systems and Technology Group

// IBM developerWorks: The Cell Broadband Engine processor security architecture
http://www.ibm.com/develope...

Well, remember, Cell/B.E.'s security is part of its architecture! It's not
an afterthought.

Up until now, the PS3 proofs the given security architecture in action.
And it can be assumed that there are really tough hackers out there
trying to break the system by all means necessary.

"without installing the cumbersom linux"

Cumbersom? never heard Linux described that way, hmmm... have you even ever used Linux, soory but most people who talk smack about it haven't even tried it, or did 10 years ago.

anh_duong5957d ago

hope this doesn't catch on until people can actually seed torrents and not just leech.

jadenkorri5956d ago

not that im looking, but the discussion came up one day between me and my friends, were commenting everything gets hacked and i mentioned that ps3 still has not, but he looked at me as if i was the dumbest person alive and said its been hacked...Well online noone has hacked it or been able to, according to the sites i have been, or maybe im not key wording it properly on google, other people tell me it has not and others say it has not...someone know anything and can clarify..

znu5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

that really depends on how you describe hacked,

yes there are little hacks

but what you want to say is has it been hacked to allow piracy, and the answer to that is no.

You can do little hacks (cod4 for example) but you cant mod it like the psp.

But to that point, hacking or modding ps3 is stupid. You want to run homebrew on you ps3... why? ATleast psp was portable so it made sense but playing roms on your ps3 is just useless since its easier to do on a pc with no risk rather than destroying your ps3.

If it is to run games off the hard drive, you would need to spend about $100-1000 hardrive to fit full games. each game is roughly 8-50 gb.
Not to mention the risk of doing something like that.

Third, is burning blurays, blu ray disk writers are too expensive, and the blu ray discs themselves are expensive too.

Not to mention, you wouldn't be able to firmware update, (no online!!!)

It's just impractical to mod or hack the ps3 since it is dangerous and pretty much useless.

jadenkorri5956d ago

thxs znu...I was aware of small hacks like that of COD4, but i was looking more at piracy, either Harddrive games, or on blu ray discs, i even heard someone had cracked DLC from PSN network...but anywho thanks, i was partly right....

i got a disagree for asking something...what the hell... well anyways

You can actually stream AVIs from the web browser on the PS3 too. There's some sites out there that are specifically made for the PS3 web browser only to achieve this task. It works really good.

Dir_en_grey5957d ago

Anybody have the links handy that they want to post?

It used to be that I can watch vids off Veoh.com on PS3 but I guess they use a newer version of flash now which PS3 doesn't support yet...

Hopefully with the next firmware update veoh will work and hopefully more video codecs are added.

Fatmanp5957d ago

lol torrents are awful use newsgroups

MazzingerZ5957d ago

NOT interested at all...but I still post :)

Britjadg5957d ago

will have a gander later when i'm in but two things strike me as potential problems

1. torrent speeds especially on larger files like TV shows etc. downloading an mp3 is one thing, but this is quite another.

2. mutiple files in a single torrent. i.e downloading albums, series etc

Game Journalism is too corporate to trust

Game reviews have been around since the mid-1970s. Play Meter was the first of its kind. During their time, it was mainly coin-operated machines that were covered, as certain arcade games that many of us consider classics such as Space Invaders were popular. Other publications sprang up, such as Arcade Alley in 1979. From then on, gaming journalism was on the rise. Electronic Games Magazine, Famitsu, The Games Machine, Nintendo Power, and others all gave way to gaming journalism’s growing popularity and importance. In the beginning, gaming journalism was about the love of the games, the history of the product, and giving potential consumers genuine insight. The passion was there. The commitment was there. The insight was there. And most importantly, the trust was there.

That and a bunch of haters have made gaming a big negative cesspool.

lodossrage1d 10h ago

True, that's almost as much of a problem as the gaming media itself

CrimsonIdol12h ago

There's a fair bit to hate about big corporate game companies

thorstein14h ago

They've become nothing more than corporate shills. Rather than speaking truth to power, they're just looking at the latest clickbait no matter how false it is.

The straight up lies are annoying. Then journalists claim that a lie is an opinion. Um... no.

yea its been like this for years and only has gotten worse during covid.

they are sometimes worse than celeb. trash news ha.

"you will NOT believe what the DEV of XYZ said"

or and those are my favourites,

"XYZ game gets REMASTER TREATMENT" and you click on the link and its just a god damn mod ha.

Tacoboto13h ago

"XYZ Players are saying THIS about the new update!"

And the article is based on a single tweet from someone with an anime profile image

porkChop6h ago

It's going to get even worse because IGN bought out a bunch of their competition this year. So IGN now publishes games, sells games, reviews the games they publish and sell, and controls a large portion of games media. What could go wrong?

Mr_cheese6h ago

N4G owners are the worst for that.

One tweet or reddit comment = full blown article

Profchaos13h ago

The gaming landscape today is full of corporations trying to suck as much money out of us as possible while giving us as little as possible in return that's the biggest problem I see right now and the fact the journos should be the ones calling the gross practices out now suckle at the teat of the publishers to stay in favour and maintain working relationships to avoid being blacklisted for reviews and preview events show their interests do not align with ours.

HankHill13h ago

Consume the new product and don't ask any questions.

Christopher11h ago

Always question change, always seek out facts.

victorMaje10h ago

Hey Chris, not sure if others have already suggested but here’s another idea for N4G, a website trust meter.
There used to be a way to click on the website of an article and downvote or something like that.
It can be like Steam’s rating, all time & recent.
Then the list of journalism website ratings accessible from a subdomain, jowebrat.n4g dot com :)

SimpleDad7h ago

@victorMaje No, this site user opinions? NO. This is not how it works my Victor. Trust meter??? LOL.

User reviews... this is what you have to look for, because games are made for users... not journalists.
Even if something is review bombed... there has to be a reason, something is wrong and you should hold on with your hard earned money.

Game sites are pushing... what they need to push, or want to push, or both.
Yes always seek out facts, right on Chris.

victorMaje6h ago

@SimpleDad

Of course games are made for users. That’s the whole point. I already seek out facts. Check my comment history you’ll see how I always advise to check trusted user reviews & I don’t pre-order.

Some journalism sites however do have user reviews, they’re not all bad journalism, these would raise the trust score of the journalism website, other stories with an agenda or disingenuous reviews could lower it.
Why not have such a tool coming out of N4G? It would be the metacritic of journalism websites, voted by N4G users. That doesn’t mean one should stop from also seeking user reviews.

I have to disagree. Personally, I feel like DD2 still needs a lot of optimization. I really dislike games that try to sell a bunch of DLC when their game is still a mess.
