The majority of horror films in the last decade have relied more and more on cheap jump scares and the shock value of increasingly graphic depictions of gore and viscera on screen to make audiences squirm in their seats. Films like the Saw and the Paranormal Activity series have been churned out of a production line made up of these scare tactics while the psychological horror that made up these genre films in the 70s and 80s have been mostly left by the wayside. Oculus is an attempt to return to old school horror; it wants to create scares that move past initial shock and surprise, something that crawls under your skin and stays with you long after you’ve viewed it.
