How the Destiny Alpha Sold Me On Bungie’s Vision

GoodGameBro writes, "As an epilogue to E3 2014, famed game developer Bungie released a Destiny First Look Alpha experience exclusive to Sony PlayStation 4 where gamers could experience a small morsel of the game in advance of next month’s beta and the eventual September 2014 release of the full retail game. Intrigued by the kind of game which could spur such a bidding war between Sony and Microsoft for exclusive content and partnership—as well as the kind of budget that has been reported and planned for the next decade or so of Destiny content—I shrugged off the fact that I was never a fan of the Halo franchise and put my name in for a code.

Despite having little interest in Destiny prior to this past weekend, my experience with the First Look Alpha has significantly changed my tune; here is how the Destiny First Look Alpha sold me on Bungie’s plans for the full title."

At first I really didn't like the game because It was really different than what i'm used to (COD/BF) At first I hated it because it was quite hard! I kept dying repeatedly.. All these level 8 guys kept killing me easily! As I ranked up, It got extremely satisfying especially using the shotgun lol!

What I loved about the MP was how it focus strictly about winning. They don't include deaths unlike COD, You get rewarded for camping and it makes it even worse because you get killstreaks and shit. In Destiny... it's all about WINNING! Stats dont mean shit.

Lawboy23601d ago

It's called halo man....that's where it comes from

ThatOneGuyThere3601d ago

its called quake, man. thats where it comes from.

guitarded773601d ago

I never cared for Halo (yes, I've played them all). But Destiny is amazing... it's like an MMO/RPG. It's a real long term shooter. Plus it's co-op centered instead of competitive centered and I like that.

The hub is cool too. You can interact with other players or just have your avatar dance... whatever.

LoneWolf0193601d ago

Yeah control is a good gametype. You can't win by camping because points accumulate by kills after controlling the points a,b,c and the more you control the more points you get for each kill/assist thus ending camping :D

Odoylerules0003601d ago

That's good news for people that care about stats. I had CoD friends that kept making new accounts so their kill to death ratio would look better. I was happy if I broke even. Yikes, I just realized I admitted to playing CoD.

corvusmd3601d ago

I didn't need an Alpha to be old on this game...I just knew when I first saw it that I would be buying it...which doesn't always happen...I'm usually pretty skeptical about games at first.

LoneWolf0193601d ago

Same here, the makers of Halo making a game like borderlands. What more do you need to know? lol

ramiuk13601d ago (Edited 3601d ago )

i preordered after the very first reveal too, something i dont think i ever done, normally i wait a little while.

i think thoi there needs to be more voice,i have a feeling non of the NPC's will be as good as borderlands

Odoylerules0003601d ago

Seems like the alpha trial is silencing some nay-sayers. Meh, I wish I had a PS4.

HeavenlySnipes3601d ago

I just wish you could start strike missions from ground level by opening a menu or from a beacon near the mission start point.

All the strikes and other missions happen on the same game map but you have to go into orbit before you can start them. The game would be much more fluid if you could do all the mission types on the fly. The invite and drop in features are already solid

cyclindk3601d ago

Wanted more out of it, still too generic, good production values, but i want innovation.

Shadonic3601d ago

I honestly think that people are thinking innovation in base gameplay value wise when it comes to this stuff, Destiny's doing interesting things when it comes to the basic open world games similar to say borderlands that I haven't seen before at least blinding aspects of MMO's into a console FPS elements that a lot of console Gamers have probably not experienced before along with the SP to MP balancing.

It seems like if its not something incredibly new that you can do with the touch of a button that's dependent on a power bar than its not necessarily innovative to the masses. If game theory is anything to go by then Players dont really want innovation they just want fun and those same experiences which I got both of from Destiny reminding me of the insanely fun old Halo days with some changes here and there.

I would say that Wii u would be the most innovative all the newer gen consoles even though its lacking in power does that mean that its your main console because of this or that you enjoy it more because of the new innovative device ?

cyclindk3601d ago (Edited 3601d ago )

I thought it goes without saying, but I guess I need to say it... innovative/fun....

Innovative as in, even if it is small... things like adding lock picking doors or hacking computers and so forth, i.e. Fallout (even if fallout didn't do it first).

So basically, I don't just want to shoot things.... if they are able to add MORE gameplay and innovate simultaneously, I would like that.

Tell me, PLEASE tell me, what, beyond shooting and choosing your equipment/upgrades you do in Destiny.

First thing that comes to my mind as a player would be I want to actually control the ship to an extent, or aspects of it, have companion I can control, things I can build on BEYOND my own character. Perhaps all this will come, but what I experienced was essentially Borderlands...

Odoylerules0003601d ago

Can't please everyone. Then again, its the alpha. Who knows what the finished product will be. Maybe they'll do something "innovative" for you. Are you sure you know what innovative means? Hacking, lock picking, controllable AI companions, and vehicular control aren't new to games.... Maybe what you should have said is that you want more action rpg elements... which is understandable. Or maybe you were trying to be ironic with your examples? I mean, don't get me wrong, a game with a 500 million dollar budget should probably offer some new and bold gameplay options... its just that nothing that you listed is innovative.

cyclindk3601d ago

Not many seem to agree with your assessment of innovative, and I was giving examples of elements which WERE at some point innovative.

And even if those examples are NOT innovative necessarily NOW, many games still "revert" to the simple "allocate XP and shoot stuff" model, when there isn't any excuse not to expand, apart from the fact that they might not want to...

Odoylerules0003594d ago

If not many agreed with my assessment of innovative, they haven't looked at a dictionary lately. Sorry if you're salty.

SITH3601d ago (Edited 3601d ago )

Bungie fan. Did not need an alpha with my 17 years of experience playing their games. I have been a bungie gamer since Myth the fallen lords. I know destiny will be great.

Shadonic3601d ago

Wow you go way back, I got onto the Bungie train through my younger cousins actually, so glad they decided to get an Xbox while we got PS2 ( we decided this so we could all get a chance to play the different games ) As soon as we all fired up the 4 controllers and played VS we were hooked for years. Wish you could of tried the Beta, the feeling when you obtain a rare cloak or piece is just awesome besides the basic borderlands feeling because you can actually show it off to the world and use it on other players in a balanced arena setting. I only wish that it had split screen co op to possibly bring back those old days in Destiny.

SITH3601d ago

I will get to try the beta this July. I know the game is great. I have been following it since ODST when destiny was hinted at. Bungie has since then talked about making an open world game. They did mention it was the halo universe initially and then stated it would be a new IP. That is the cool thing about destiny, it is much older than people know.

Odoylerules0003601d ago

Myth the Fallen Lords. Bubble up from that alone. Yeah, Bungie has a pretty good track record.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter334d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood334d ago (Edited 334d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell333d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig333d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast333d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g333d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka333d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai484d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface483d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard481d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
