Palmer Luckey: Project Morpheus is 'Good', Thinks Oculus is 'Better'

VRFocus - So far Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Oculus VR have shared a friendly relationship in the virtual reality (VR) space. SCE is fully aware that it stepped into the latter’s territory when it revealed its Project Morpheus VR headset in March 2014 and has been complimentary about the company’s work since. Oculus VR, maker of the Oculus Rift headset, has taken very much the same approach, citing the positive implications of SCE arriving in the industry. However company founder and headset designer Palmer Luckey recently bucked that trend, stating that he thinks Oculus VR’s device is ‘better’.

He's not being rude about it and he is very likely right. Even though I plan on getting both VR headsets I don't have much doubt that the Oculus Rift will have the superior specs and give the better VR experience overall.

I still think Sony will go for a pretty low price on their VR so they'll make a ton of money selling games and more with it. It will be good enough just like a console is good enough for many people.

Morpheus needs retinal scanning or some other way to verify an adult is playing so we can get the porns ;)!

Judging from the ultra-violent games at E3 and the nudity etc in GTA V I assume it could happen eventually. I want it all Sony, my body is ready.

Facebook is worth so much because they sell your data to advertisers in 2013 there value rose to over 100 billion not bad for a site that doesn't try to sell you much apart from some micro-transactions in games...

As of now (and things can and most certainly will change for the consumer model) the Rift has a larger field-of-view and has Low Persistance (a technique that reduces motion blur).

Having said that, nobody is coming out of a Project Morpheus demo dissapointed. Heck, there is a video on YouTube of Palmer Luckey himself enjoying Project Morpheus. I haven't had the privilege of trying either HMD myself, but judging from reactions of those that have, both VR headsets are incredibly impressive.

The real difference between these headsets are:

1) The Oculus Rift is going to be used for far more than gaming. Virtual tour, videos, social apps, education... All will be available for the Rift. Some of these experiences may find their way to PS4, but Morpheus will mainly focus solely on games.

2) Games. Oculus now has its own first party game developers, but they're unproven and nowhere near the number of studios Sony has. Sony is known to have a number of high quality game developers in their stable. Who knows what resources Sony is going to devote to VR gaming, but the talent is there.

Sony may have the first party software, but VR is hardware. We're already seeing the PS4 struggle to keep up with 1080p resolutions at 60 FPS, which is the bare-minimum for a comfortable VR experience.

Resolution and framerate are hugely important factors in VR quality, and Sony's going to be losing that race from day one.

A compelling game with great gameplay trumps graphics. If that wasn't the case then we'd all be PC gamers right now. Obviously the ps4 isn't going to be on the same level with PC when it comes to VR graphics. However, you're forgetting the little box the ps4 plugs into when using the Morpheus. That box unloads some of the VR processing from the ps4. No you can say that Sony is going to be "losing the race from day one," but you've never tried it. I've seen multiple articles and interviews from people who've actually went hands on with the Morpheus, and they are all extremely positive. So yeah, I'm not worried about Project Morpheus' ability to live up to what VR standards should be.

If resolution and framerate are already issues for the new consoles, imagine how things are gonna be in 2-3 years when VR is actually out in the market.

The Rift is going to nice and crisp at 4k resolutions soon enough while Morpheus will continue to be 1080p (again, which is barely enough for decent VR).
