Microsoft's Third Party Exclusive May Be Timed, From An Off-The-Radar Series

Some new tidbits around the rumored big third party exclusive snatched by Microsoft have been pouring out: it should be a timed exclusive from a series that's been "off-the-radar" lately.

Who the Hell would commit to a full-exclusive after Titanfall came, and sank? I know 1.5m units on all platforms combined, isn't bad. But even DS 2 did over 2m, and that's niche and without ANY of the massive showering of the MS media doubloons. I don't see another real exclusive from MS this gen, unless they use an IP they own or built it internally. Even mid-tier games are a bit of a stretch for exclusivity now.

jackanderson19853770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

where did you get the 1.5mil from? also it's still in the top ten of charts nearly 3 months after it came out wouldn't exactly say it sank

Wikkid6663770d ago

What? Titanfall is close to the 3 million mark on all platforms.

towelie12883770d ago

sank......???? are you serious
get out of here troll

NewMonday3770d ago

@Wikkid666

sorry! not yet at 2 million

it sank because it didn't do 10 million minimum like they expected it to do, EA wanted the game to compete with CoD.

Bioshock Infinite and tomb Raider sold over 6 million but are considered failures.

Ballsack3770d ago

I got the biggest feeling its shenmue

ms win e3 for me if it is ..and I will buy a xbone on the release day of shenmue just for that game

christocolus3770d ago

@bicfitness

It didn't sink dude. The 1.5 mil your talking about might just be the xbox one copy alone(I think its even more than that now)

@Newmonday

Dude pls stop. You've hated this game right from the beginning. It didnt sell tombraider numbers so does that mean it sank? Do you even know what the budget was for both games and pls provide a link to show EA wanted 10 million copies sold..

You need to stop going around spreading crap dude. Its above 2mill. Its above 1.5 and close to 2mill on xbx one alone combine pc and 360 and you should get close to 2.5 or 3mill now. Give it a rest.

Tedakin3770d ago

Yeah not sure where people get these "Titanfall flopped" numbers from. It's been at or near the top of the charts for 10 weeks now, even in the UK. I think it's sold quite a lot.....

Wikkid6663770d ago

@NewMonday

Please show us your source. It's very close to the 3 million units without adding all the digital sales. Which are a majority of the pc and all the XBO one bundles.

4Sh0w3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

I see alot of talk about timed X1 exclusives but no evidence of DR3, Ryse, or Titanfall coming to ps4, those games are exclusive to X1, then of course Forza5 and Killer Instinct are 1st party.

lol, Indie games maybe, but if anything the evidence 100% supports that if this is a 3rd party AAA funded by micro then it will remain exclusive, there's always a chance years later but by then we've moved on to new games.

No Titanfall has sold close to 3mil, plus the vast majority are on X1 and 360, pc sales are a tiny fraction of sales.

Sitdown3770d ago

@NewMonday
Did they stop selling the game? If not, can't it still reach 10 million? The expectation you say they have...

Lawboy23770d ago

Wait a minute wait a minute.....I just read the article this rumor is from thuway....wow...did u sony guys know that no more than 8-9 hours ago thuway said that sony wouldn't be releasing anything this year but that article got declined to high heaven...how did this article make it through and that one didn't....how is he right about this but wrong about sony....wow...just wow

Alexious3770d ago

Titanfall kinda flopped for a number of reasons, not only because it's not on PS4.

The game just didn't have lasting power.

NewMonday3770d ago

@Sitdown

the bulk of sales is made in first few weeks, right now it's way off the pace could barley hit 5 million lifetime.

@jackanderson1985

mainly the UK charts where the game is free, and the delayed release on the 360 made it seem long standing. and the total volume is low.

guitarded773770d ago

I swear to Christ if it's Star Wars Battlefront III I will burn down EA. I have been one of the most vocal about getting this game to the masses, and if they try and screw me, I'll be beyond pissed. Nothing against XBOX One... I just don't want to buy another console for the ONE game I need.

alexkoepp3770d ago

First games that come to mind for off the radar are Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Battlefront, Fallout. I'd be happy with any of those

Wikkid6663770d ago

@NewMonday

Please get your facts straight. The Titanfall Bundle doesn't count on sales charts except hardware. The free copy of the game is a digital download and digital copies aren't counted on any sales charts.

jcnba283770d ago

Titanfall came and sank? Have you seen where Infamous Second Son is now on the charts?

walkincarpet3770d ago

not sure where you got 1.5m from but I think this game could be Shenmue. Unreal Tournament is another good possibility given their relationship with Epic and their goal to remain head and shoulders over Sony in the multiplayer arena.

kreate3770d ago

u know.. I was just in the island of Taiwan a few weeks ago. and even there, I saw titanfall posters and ads everywhere.

who buys titanfall in Taiwan? or even has a X1?

megadrivesonic3770d ago

Titanfall wasn't an Xbox exclusive to begin with it was on the PC, why do people seem to forget this.

NewMonday3770d ago

@Wikkid666

they count because it is an official bundle that can be tracked, that is an actual fact.

duckmysick3770d ago

Omg! Whoopty doo! If Titanfall sold 3 million copies, we wouldn't hear the last of it! The majority of the copies comes from 360 and PC (combined) vs. The One version.
The last NPD showed that. Plus the statement from Sony saying infamous was the best selling next-gen game last month. The 360 version is the only reason Titanfall remained at top, the rest was filled with multiplatform games. Titanfall on XBOX ONE did not meet expectations. And as we ALL KNOW it didn't sell systems, you know... The reason they moneyhatted it in the first place!?!?

esemce3770d ago

Yeah it's gonna be Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza all over again and a bit of Kinect crap.

I think most of their 'exclusives' will be timed. Devs can ignore the PS4/PC at their peril.

shadyiswin3770d ago

@newmonday,when the hell did they say they expected it to sell 10 mill? how is that even an option with an install base of 3 mill? even halo on 360 has a hard time getting to 10 mill. Titanfall has sold phenomenal,if titanfall is flopping so bad, what do we think of infamous SS sales? it is always and i mean always way underneath titanfall on the charts, but there never any talk of it sales on this site lol

FamilyGuy3770d ago

What if it's Mortal Kombat?

Azzanation3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Dude TF is past 1.7million on X1 alone. If anything Infamous sank considering that was a huge PS franchise. Maybe that should have been multiplatform.

And for the record MS don't brag about Sale charts like others do. Halo 4 sold 9 million copies. How many times has MS brought that up?

PS guys get your facts straight. Titanfall is a MS exclusive not a Xbox exclusive. There's a very big difference in the two.

dansdooz3770d ago

lol, you are forgetting the huge payload that ms paid for the exclusive that could of easily covered sales on ps4!
it also came out on 360 and pc.
Anyhow game was over rated wish i didnt buy the digital version but there you go....

I've lost all respect for Microsoft Game Studios, its like they aren't even trying anymore.

"Hey you,*Throws millions at them*, go make a game exclusively on the xbox for 6 months,*ok*, that's my boy". That's practically what they are doing.

@Below

They aren't funding the studios, they are throwing money at some publishers to make the game an exclusive for a timed period, its not like they are paying a developing company to develop an IP under Microsoft Studios, they are just paying some publisher money for an already existing IP to be exclusive for 6 months or a year. Instead of using that money on a new IP co-created with a developer.

3770d ago
NewMonday3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

if it is timed it will be dismissed as a selling point by the gaming community.

@UbiquitousClam

no!

timed exclusive is paying to stop people from making games for others for a short period of time?

Charybdis3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

They saved titanfall (new ip, financially aided development). They allowed insomaniac to own the right to sunset over drive (new ip, paid for development and probably advertising) and go crasy with it, while also securing publishing rights as the publisher.

They seem to be reinvisting in old rare franchises such as killer instinct and other rumoured rare titles. Fable legends like a good new entry to the franchise. They bought the rights for gears of war. Knack (new ip) seems interesting. They secured ryse (new ip)they managed to get some support of at least one confirmed japanese developper for an exclusive title. Quantum break seems like an interesting game (new ip). Honestly I am quite impressed by the efforts of Microsoft.

Also remember that Microsoft doesn't have infinite funds so they can't just throw money at everything, but it ofcourse helps.

christocolus3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Dead rising 3 was funded by MS (capcom actually said the game would never be made if not for MS)its the same thing mark rein said about gears of war, same thing platinum is doing with nintendo on bayonetta2.remember the first dead rising on xbx 360?it was the same thing and the funny thing is people keep attacking ms for this and forget that sony does this same deals with a number of japanese devs.

Titanfall was co funded by EA&MS. I think sony is doing same with deepdown/capcom. Titles like those tend to stay exclusive to that platform.

And people need to know that games have actually become quite expensive to make and more devs are beginning to look elsewhere for funding. Its no surprise many would go to MS since they actually have the funds to support them. Take titanfall for example not even EA(the biggest 3rd party publisher) was willing to take the risk alone and MS had to step in to save the game. Devs need funds to pay bills and create those huge aa games we all love.full or timed exclusives from third parties is a business practice that will continue this gen. It aint a bad deal for the devs, they get funding, stay relevant and besides ms can actually fund that while still opening up new studios( lxp, lift, platform next) and investing in more 1st and 2nd party ips. so its a win win.

Belasco3770d ago

I can say with absolute certainty that you are talking through your ass.

CYCLEGAMER3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Uh, Titanfall wouldn't even exist right now if it wasn't for MS. They funded the development for Dead Rising 3 and own the IP for Ryse, Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, which were all developed by 3rd party studios...so what? You trolls are amazing, especially @newmonday.

Mega243770d ago

I not trolling, to those who say that Titanfall couldn't happen if MS didn't stepped in, well I really am not sure, but if EA a mega company, making millions doesn't have enough funds for a game which they kept clamoring was gonna be the revolution of fps, they have problems.

Now people in the comments say "well this are practices of the common company, and it ain't a big deal", I remember a few months back, when Shu Yoshida was thinking of bringing back Shenmue, co-developing it with Sega, a lot of people bitched about it being a Sony exclusive.

Man the hypocrisy on the community is unbearable.

I for one am against Third Party exclusive. They should never happen.

logan_izer103770d ago

Lots of XFans here I see. Truth is you are right. It's lazy. Sony goes out and builds and establishes successful studios and makes REAL exclusives. Xbox just sits around waiting for 3rd party devs to make good games and then they jump up and throw millions at them and say, "Hey, don't put this on ps4 for 6 months!"

Alexious3770d ago

Well, Phil said there will be more exclusives from internal studios as well. Let's wait and see.

walkincarpet3770d ago

I agree partially...especially with what they did in the past but Titanfall is not a good example of this and we'll see what this new game is and how they are involved. In terms of games looks they are ahead of Sony for the moment but I expect Sony to catch up. From a technical perspective MS is miles ahead of the competition when it comes to innovation and introducing new gaming features. Unfortunately, they presented themselves very badly last year and some risks will not pan out as is the case of their DRM and the Nitendo's WiiU....we'll see how Morpheus does.

TM3333770d ago

I agree with you. I can't stand Micro's tactics. I'd much rather them focus on good 1st party exclusives and let the multi's stay multi. The thought of them making Battlefront a timed exclusive makes me SICK. I would absolute write to EA, Disney, and Micro to let them know what I think if that happens.

FanboyKilla3770d ago

Lol sony fans. You think you are hot and bothered now? I got a ps4, i know what you are really going thru. No games, weak software, game cancelations. Most of all the good exclusives that will release this year belong to xone. E3 coming, biggest news here microsoft got another exclusive that most of us play. Sonys flagship uncharted wont be out to 2015=prolly 2016. Sony fans have nothing but the dreams sony sold us last e3. Wow just wow. Now am i suppose to listen to you tell me about more games i wont be playing? Lmfao a sony wtf am i suppose to do with this ps4? (sony) giggles and high fives all around suckers!

MetaReapre3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

@charybdis
Did I just see you list knack, a ps4 exclusive as a xb1 exclusive? What?

Tito083770d ago

@FanboyKilla- Says the one bubble XBot with an imaginary PS4, congratulations, you just earned the title of dumbass.

doolin_dalton3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

@Mega24

I've lost all respect for fanboys who judge games by everything EXCEPT what they should be judged on.

Instead of looking at graphics, sound, gameplay or story, you focus on who's name is on the least to the studio that created it. Shouldn't the main focus be on how FUN the game is, regardless of the contracts involved?

If MS pays a studio to create a game, that somehow bad. Yet if Sony pays money to buy a studio, you'd have no problem with it. Exclusivity does not equal quality - it never has. You're just quick to dismiss these practices because they don't happen to favor your favorite company.

Face it, you're nothing but a hater. MS is better at securing third party exclusive content than Sony is, therefore you deem third party exclusive content to be evil. The quality of the game is completely irrelevant to you.

Some developers like the freedom of doing whatever they want. It's not always an advantage to be tied exclusively to one console.

Oh well, like you say:

"Fanboys are going to be fanboys, no one cares about fun anymore it seems."

Left for dead 1 & 2 arent exactly "off the radar" but a game series like Shenmue is.

the rumor of MS helping to fund development in exchange for timed exclusivity seems promising.

Plus the game has the weight that is needed to sell systems to those who are diehard shenmue fans (like myself).

cfc783770d ago

It's more likely Dino Crisis.

Alexious3770d ago

I don't think Valve would make Left 4 Dead exclusive to Xbox One, even just temporarily.

beerzombie3770d ago

that would rock, but I think the company who made that is making Evolve.

Ive a feeling MS will have a poor show this year.
Both Sony and Nintendo are preparing for something grand while MS only talks about their Halos.

christocolus3770d ago

You again? Dont you ever get tired of it?

Its always the same comment and feelings..last year it was going to be all about kinect and MS proved you wrong, now you think they will have a bad show this year? Lol.

I guess you need a break. Once in a while come out from under that bridge and take a stroll.breathe in some fresh air..it clears the mind and in turn youll start making more reasonable comments.

marlinfan103770d ago

haha yeah i know they've only revealed gwg for x1, kinectless x1, and shown gameplay for sunset overdrive and quantum break all BEFORE e3. but yeah I'm sure they don't have much going on at e3...

I doubt the rumored 3rd party exclusive exist..It's a waste of time in my opinion for companies to throw cash at timed software deals.

Imp0ssibl33770d ago

The Xbox One needs every thing it can get if Microsoft wants to be anywhere near Sony this console generation. A timed exclusive may be the motivation someone on the fence needs to choose between the PS4 and Xbone.

NYC_Gamer3770d ago

MS needs to fund the development of software instead of paying for the title to be exclusive to Xbox One for a couple months.

ger23963770d ago

But if its timed, why would that make you want to buy a consloe? It's eventually coming to the other console with added content.

4Sh0w3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

@NYC Gamer

What's been timed exclusive on X1 for a couple months so far?

Definitely not Forza5 or Killer Instinct, right?

Then:

Titanfall(1) is exclusive forever as micro/EA/Respawn inked that deal, so then DR3 and Ryse made by Capcom and Crytek are games funded by micro and been out almost a half year ONLY on X1.

Then:

You have besides next year major titles coming like Halo5 the rest we dont know yet but up next is Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break, SO maintains the pattern of DR3 which is the first is exclusive due micro funding, sequels are anybody guess since micro doesn't own IP, QB is exclusive like Alan Wake.

--In what world has micro only been paying for games that are "exclusive to Xbox One a couple months"???

Copen3770d ago

Wishful thinking but no. Seeing as every multi plat is better on the PS4 if a game is a timed exclusive the majority of people will just wait and buy the PS4 version.

aceitman3770d ago

lmao let ms get the timed exclusive X1 can be the beta and ps4 can be the final product, just like plants vs zombies 1080p buttery smooth frame rate . and with the so called X1 exclusive boss mode and split screen. what happened there??. tides have turned and devs gotta think should they take a lump sum , and risk losing fan base on a platform that is selling very well. and put them in a spot that may not be well for there future games or go with multi platform sell on both and enjoy the one the sells more and continue with there fanbase on both platforms , ms is not selling to expectations at all , 399 x1 is not even on the amazons 300 list. it was in 423 spot last time I seen it 2 days ago.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3770d ago
Charybdis3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Well nothing is sure we now have a rumour that microsoft will have yet another unnamed third party exclusive. From there we have another rumour that probably involves the exact same third party exclusive title from the first rumour; which says that that the yet unnamed exclusive of a third party is rumoured to be a timed exclusive. Then we have another source probably also referring to the exact same rumoured title which the 2nd rumour is talking about and saying that its a title which has been of the radar for a while.

Copen3770d ago

Yeah Home front 2 lol MS is beyond desperate at this point and they deserve the position they put themselves in.

stuna13770d ago

Good one! I get exactly what you're saying. Not saying it's true, but from your unique way of putting it 1 unannounced title becomes 3!

torchic3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Square Enix don't roll like that anymore. even Kingdom Hearts went multiplatform.

it must be something from EA, Capcom or even Valve

Alexious3770d ago

I don't think so, as it would honestly be even lower than Splinter Cell: Conviction as importance - particularly because Avalanche Studios is doing Mad Max right now.

majiebeast3770d ago

Mark my words its Rainbow Six Patriots or whatever its called now.

4logpc3770d ago

I really hope it isnt a shooter. They already push for the timed COD DLC, and they have Halo as well, plus combine that with all of the third party shooters, and the market has enough.

aceitman3770d ago

someone told me on twitter its a shooter but will not say what , they also stated that ms wants to go back to the beginning of the 360 days ,have a few platformers but concentrate on shooters , it is said that's what made the 360 so popular . that's y there bringing halo 1-4 remastered and MWcod remastered , with exclusive X1 content.

Aurenar3770d ago

I think like you. I think that this is Patriots.

majiebeast3770d ago

It fits all the criteria plus it was a game in development hell.

beerzombie3770d ago

I would love that 4 player co-op

torchic3770d ago

good shout! the development has been in limbo and it's a shooter so yeah a good possibility!

Copen3770d ago

Absolutely not. A game of that magnitude at this point and time wouldn't ever be exclusive to the console being outsold nearly 2 to 1 world wide. Latest rumor from multiple sources is that it's Home Front 2. MS won't be getting anything big and relevant in the position they're in. The cost is too steep and publishers stand to lose money cutting out the PS4 install base. And even if MS somehow managed to compensate and more for lost sales what publisher wants to be chained and associated with MS and the train wreck that is the xbox one? Ditching Kinect copying Sony it's a console without an identity trying to hang with the cool kids but it can't.

hellzsupernova3770d ago

That makes sense to, especially after crystal bought the rights to the ip

hellzsupernova3770d ago

This actually makes sense. It was shown or whatever years ago then disappeared. Plus it is microsofts ideal kind of game a shooter it's what their fans buy most

Majin-vegeta3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

I'll see your Patriots and Raise you Homefront sequel ;) .

Edit:Dammit didnt see Copen comment.

beerzombie3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Good.

Now that you´re releasing games and making big money from every gaming platform, you should double that amount and give us even more day one third party games!

Jin_Sakai4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You’re delusional beyond belief. Businesses wise it doesn’t make sense and sooner or later they’ll be raising prices again to cover that billion they’re blowing every year.

outsider16244d ago

Lucky for xbox that papa microsoft is rich.

purple1014d ago (Edited 4d ago )

As someone else said earlier today, they are past the growth stage, it’s been stagnent for last 3 years, they are now in the money making stage, prepare to be goosed for as many dollars as possible for the least amount of content. It may not be bad now, (actually it is) but it will be soon (even worse) this year you got hellblade and starfirld and a load of other games that could be bought in bargain bins for about $5-30 and for that you pay them monthly

To add I honestly don’t know how you put up with the barrage of Xbox negativity (which is deserved). I put it down to:

A) you are being paid
B) you may have a problem thinking clearly
C) prefer rooting for the underdog, that’s a legit thing too. English people do it by default

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Yeah Aussies also love an underdog as long as that underdog isn't Xbox as they were too of the game with the 360 then lost their minds

Yet people still allow the troll to derail an entire topic. I don’t understand how moderation allows it.

I literally just skip the comment. This may be the best comment obscure ever made. I don’t know because I didn’t read it. I have read to many thread derailing post from this person to ever devote any time to reading another.

I wish everyone would ignore the trolls so we can have a genuine discussion. Stop feeding it and it will go away. Even just hitting the disagree button feeds it. Thats what it wants. This is the last post I will ever post about obscure because I am feeding them now.

Legit question to Mods. After such a long history of being a troll, how has this poster not been banned?

Profchaos3d ago

Is he though or does he just blindly love Xbox in the same way Sega fans loved the Dreamcast even though it was clearly dead they thought it could be redeemed

Sonic18814d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Are you insane? You want them to double the amount when the Xbox is already struggling and losing money 🤔

Hofstaderman4d ago

Correction....XBOX is already dead.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

"Are you insane? You want them to double the amount when the Xbox is already struggling and losing money"

As long we get the games I couldn´t care less about a trillion dollar company losing money. That´s their business to worry about. I only care about the games.

And "struggling and losing money"? Really?

"Microsoft reports Xbox’s revenue is up 61% in Q4 FY24 thanks to Activision"

https://venturebeat.com/gam...

61% more revenue and BO6 is not even out yet.

MS will make a sh!t ton of money with that game alone in all platforms. So 2 Billion yearly invested in their *core* business is nothing!

So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period.

Sonic18814d ago (Edited 4d ago )

"So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period."

That ain't going to happen. Just because you want it 😂

fr0sty4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

They'll do that, after creating 4 more higher-priced tiers and making the one that currently includes everything only contain games that have been on the market for 4 years.

"Gamepass Ultra to the MAX: Now only $299 per year!"

MrNinosan2d ago

Already $240/year, so we're there within a year, without new tiers.

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It will be 29.99$ a month eventually 360 a year

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I like how they twist cannibalising game sales into "invests".

No lifetime sales with MS, they'll F-up gaming the same as streaming services have done to the movie industry and it's workforce.

lol

Pretty much. There's a lot of hate on this site for Gamepass, but put games on the different tiers of the PS subscription, and whenever they get that free day one release, it's an entirely different tune. No talk about how this choice is killing devs.

DarXyde4d ago

Do we think they're unhappy?

Umm...YES...?

They literally need to be paid up front to put games on the service. It's become a way to gain a foothold on the platform.

Do you think Atlus would launch on Game Pass otherwise?

"Out of interest do you think those 3rd parties signing the deal are unhappy with the severence and have a gun to their head?"

I think you mean severance... and I've noticed you don't know what it means either, MS aren't firing the third-parties they're purchasing from.

"Bro probably has a PS+ sub and has library full of Epic launcher free games."

I'm not a console gamer, but yes I do have Epic with a library full of free games... but guess what Epic rotating free games every week doesn't do. It doesn't destroy lifetime sales and cut workers out of residuals. Then you bring up PS+ a service that also doesn't destroy lifetime sales as their model allows for new releases to earn.

There are pros and cons to everything. Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand. Services like Netflix has made it so that more studios can get a share in the profit where they can reach more consumers worldwide compared to the old days where the masses will only watch a few new titles per month.

The only negative about streaming services is that it no longer makes any sense to sell DVDs and Blu-rays though it can be argued that those persons may have moved on to building digital libraries for the sake of convenience.

The reason Xbox is doing so poorly is because they are not doing enough to be competitive. Their output of AA and AAA exclusive titles are extremely low compared to the competition and they haven't had a game of the year nominee in years.

Releasing their games the same date on PC is also hurting their console and it would have been more strategic for them to delay those releases by a year similar to what Sony does to maximize profits.

Gamepass alone is not to blame for Xbox's current position because it can be argued that if the service didn't exist and they had the same gaming output as they have now, they would be in an even worst spot.

MrDead3d ago

"Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand."

It's nothing like cable. My comment isn't a guess lifetime sale of films has shrunk to a point it's almost gone and so has the revenue it generated, that is money from competing TV networks, cable/satellite and physical media sales.

Lack of revenue transparency with streaming has meant workers job security and pay has massively diminished, earnings from residuals is almost gone for example the writer for Squid Games because of streaming gets no royalties despite series earning $900 million for Netflix, before streaming he would have royalties form lifetime sales.
Or another example Willow the series was pulled and is no longer watchable here's why: “Willow” was one of nearly 50 titles that Disney+ pulled from its streaming library in May. Other titles included the series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and the feature film “The One and Only Ivan.” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy explained that Disney was expecting to take a write-down in the June quarter of $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion by removing content from its streaming platforms. By writing down the value of the content assets, Disney can remove that from its balance sheet and reduce its tax bill." Also when you pull a show you no longer need to pay residuals to the workers.

Have you also noticed the drop in quality on sfx or thought some older films look so much better then they do now? This is because the industry now relies on cheap labour for sfx outsourcing abroad, more green screen instead of location shooting and a lot less real extras bring life to a scene.

Streaming in gaming is going to be far worse as we've seen with MS consolidating a massive part of the industry to try and make the service sustainable, lifetime sales being cannibalised by gamespass and a work force that has no unions like SAG is already paying the price.

All streaming does is remove income transparency, cuts the workers from the money and sets flat rates and removes consumer ownership... but CEO's and shareholders will still be ok as they benefit from the industry consolidation.

Huey_My_D_Long3d ago

MrDead is absolutely on fire with the post.

Nothing else I have to add other than that.

DivineHand1253d ago

@MrDead like I said pros and cons. Some of those issues can alleviated with alleviated with regulatory intervention to give more transparency to the industry but unlikely anytime soon with all the lobbying going on.

The issue with the squid game's writer can be attributed to the terms and conditions he agreed to. It happens often in business as no one really knows how popular something will be until you catch that lightning in a bottle. I remember reading about how Nintendo hardly made anything off Pokemon Go dispite Niantic making Billions.

I don't blame streaming services for studios finding was to reduce the cost of making films. That stuff would have happened regardless because of the greed of these corporations. We see that same cost reduction happening in every industry from food to Aerospace.

Report: Microsoft Cutting 650 More Jobs From Gaming Division Per Phil Spencer's Letter to Employees

Phil Spencer has sent a letter out to employees informing them that 650 jobs would be cut from Microsoft's gaming division.

VenomUK12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

‘Good guy Phil’?

The truth likely is that the decision was not his to make and is possibly a direct consequence of cutting costs following the ABK deal.

XiNatsuDragnel12d ago

Lol good guy Phil lmfao crazy

DodoDojo12d ago

Would be nice if he'd mail one of those letters to himself.

RhinoGamer8812d ago

Cut costs -> no bonus, stock options, raises for Phil and his leadership team.

Lightning7712d ago

"Good guy Phil" is comical. You have to bleed green to see that. I'm only a matter of time until MS, that's right MS even in ages themselves from the industry.

Sad, people and even sadder and pathetic company.

fr0sty12d ago

If they keep this up, they won't even be able to go third party anymore after they stop making Xbox hardware.

game devs aren't being let go.

“As part of aligning our post-acquisition team structure and managing our business, we have made the decision to eliminate approximately 650 roles across Microsoft Gaming—mostly corporate and supporting functions—to organize our business for long term success.”

darthv7212d ago

getting rid of some suits... now this news isnt so bad. Too many suits makes all the wrong decisions, esp the top dogs.

Michiel198912d ago

@darth they arent suits, they are people that work in administration, customer support and that kinda stuff

ZacultronTheFirst12d ago

Probably people from much needed Marketing department.

Nacho_Z12d ago

It doesn't make it any better if they aren't devs being fired.

"The day we hear that Xbox is no more is vastly approaching."

Not sure Sony is doing any better with all that money lost on GaaS and all that worldwide backlash regarding the Pro.

@obscured: “ Not sure Sony is doing any better with all that money lost on GaaS and all that worldwide backlash regarding the Pro.”
.
Welcome back we missed you said no one 🤣

.
I don’t remember Sony cutting over 1900 employees then Less than 7 months later get a leak for another 600 to be on the chopping board but hey let’s equate that to a few people not been happy about a mid gen system refresh price 🤦🏿.

1Victor12d ago

@obscured: “
They also casually forget that Sony have been laying off thousands of people too”
Yeeesh I got a better help discount code for you

BehindTheRows12d ago

Uh, thr Pro "backlash" is hardly something that's going to tank their business. Unless you've been living under a rock, there's no question that Xbox is in the gutter.

Quit pivoting to Sony because you don't like the subject matter. Their game division isn't in the toilet.

DodoDojo12d ago

Well Sony isn't selling more copies of their games on a rival system yet so they must be doing alright.

Vastly approaching is a weird phrase… vastly is typically used to convey the degree of some size or length or time.

Vastly approaching makes no sense.

You mean rapidly approaching.

MrDead12d ago

A combined $80 billion spent on consolidating a massive part of the industry, thousands fired all to line the pockets of the already wealthy and turn the gaming industry into a rental service.

FU MS.

crazyCoconuts12d ago

MS is a publicly traded company. If you have a 401K you yourself might own MS stocks.
I'm definitely not a MS fan, but CEOs need to keep returns high to keep their jobs if nothing else. They don't get to transfer the salaries to their accounts.
I blame MS for failed strategies, poor execution, lack of vision, etc.
These layoffs are just the result of those things.

MrDead12d ago

That's the weakest excuse for a giant monopoly I've ever seen... also companies like MS are more likely to damage people's 401k through monopolistic practices.

Obscure_Observer12d ago

"FU MS."

I love how you act all enraged and bully when it´s MS firing people.

"It´s all about the workers" at least they´re Sony´s employees, right? If they´re Sony they can go f* themselves right? It´s all justified and the blame lies elsewhere on some widespread industry problem, right? Right?

We been seeing some of Sony recent bs moves and you know what´s coming, right?

I´m expecting you to disappear the same way you do every time Sony layoff hundreds of people or get a whole studio shut down.

You´ll do anything to avoid and hold them accountable. But that's OK. You´are not biased, right?

1Victor12d ago

@obscured: “ "It´s all about the workers" at least they´re Sony´s employees, right? If they´re Sony they can go f* themselves right? It´s all justified and the blame lies elsewhere on some widespread industry problem, right? Right?”

.
Well Sony didn’t overreached and spend over 80 BILLION$ to acquire mayor 3rd party game developers and one MAYOR publisher the owner of the BIGGEST FPS just hoping to keeping it exclusive to their system and now having to fire thousands of employees to valance their books one more quarter.
Now Microsoft is beginning and going to kiss Sony dark ring and publish their “first party games “ on PlayStation. Regardless of who it is it’s wrong to do an acquisition and then fire people.
I applaud Microsoft for at least giving them a severance package and assistance getting a new job 👍👍.

MrDead12d ago

Chill out kid... also why bring up Sony, have they just spent 80 billion to consolidate a massive part of the industry to the detriment of thousands of workers?

MS lines their pockets whilst firing thousands, such a shame you support this.

Chevalier12d ago

Gee someone here said Xbox would NEVER release 1st party games on Playstation or competing platforms again?! Never tired to see you eat crow again.

Looks good to me and I’m glad it’s coming to ps5

VenomUK16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

When it comes to video game previews I’m of the opinion that journalists should maintain a position of CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM. Yes, note and share concerns about the game with readers but maintain a restrained optimistic stance until actually having reviewed it so that any negativity is based on the game’s quality and not the author’s prejudices.

Here the author writes “ I’m going to continue to keep my cynicisms intact, less so because of my trust in MachineGames and more so due to the dumpster fire that continues to be modern-day Xbox.” This example illustrates the need to follow this guidance.

DefenderOfDoom216d ago

Not worried about facial animations , but I do hope the gameplay is fun . Most definitely I will purchase this on PS5, if the gameplay is fun .

BaughJaughs16d ago

nice hit piece. I notice the writer didn't mention any of the journalists / creators who had good things to say. From what i hear, it has riddick: escape from butcher bay in its DNA. To me that sounds like something to be Optimistic about rather than pessimistic.

ChasterMies16d ago

It’s odd to have a first person perspective for an adventure game with stealth and brawling. But’s not without precedent. Wolfenstein: New Order and Wolfenstein: New Colossus had a lot of adventure game elements. They were in the league of the greatest games ever, but they were both fun games. Indy looks fun too.

YourMommySpoils16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Yes, Indy looks like Todd Howard. Something feels way too off.
