Here Is What System Shock 2 Could Look Like In CRYENGINE

Although there have been various HD Texture Packs for it, we cannot deny that System Shock 2 looks really, really dated. So what if this classic was remade in a current-gen engine? Polycount’s member ‘Mr Smo’ gives us a glimpse at such a project.

My absolute second most favorite PC game ever (behind Deus Ex) This looks absolutely stunning!

I would love a System Shock 3, but only if it were to be made by the same team as SS2, which I know is an impossibility. I remember being bitterly disappointed with Bioshock when it was released on account of the story being a direct ripoff of System Shock 2, only padded out for a large majority of the game and executed far worse.

In System Shock 2, the whole concept of following orders from someone on the radio and it turning out to be the bad guy was revealed within the first 2 hours. However, what made it fantastic is that SHODAN would taunt you for following her orders, yet at the same time you realized that because you wanted to play the game and see what happened next, you were indirectly doing her evil deeds while she continued to belittle you for it. Just fantastic. It sort of broke the fourth wall and had a kind of meta thing going on. Ultimately, the first main story twist had a far better impact. In Bioshock, the whole story climaxed on this same twist and was revealed way late in the game and could be seen a mile off by those who played SS2. The game itself was so much more advanced and complex. Where Bioshock was more of an FPS, SS2 was a more traditional RPG that combined FPS elements (basically like Deus Ex)

When it comes down to it, System Shock 2 is an absolutely stunning game, and one that I can still thoroughly enjoy to this day! If you can suffer dated visuals, but are looking for an excellently designed RPG with a creepy as hell atmosphere, PLAY IT!

You realize that you cannot rip off your own work correct? And it was a spiritual successor to System Shock so of course Bioshock was using one the elements of a story the developers liked

ThatEnglishDude3629d ago

It just come off as lazy. People continue to use Bioshock as an example of great storytelling as if it's never been told before, and it's simply not.

Being a spiritual successor doesn't give the writer a free pass to do what they've done before. Short of the art style, it wasn't very ambitious at all. It wasn't BAD, just not very original or inspired, and being a fan of his previous games - was bitterly disappointed is all.

Looks sterile. None of the grime or blood on the walls or the floor, it also looks a tad lighter than the original SS2 too.

elhebbo163630d ago

The dude only did a couple of screenshots to show off the engine not to make an exact replica of SS2.

barb_wire3630d ago

Oh really, the dude goes to great lengths in rendering SHODAN, down it a head full of wires protruding from it and yet I'm supposed to give him the benefit of doubt over his completely sterile corridors.. give me a break.

Look I just think the screen shots look great even if it doesn't exactly mimmic the original game, heck he doesn't even try too. do you see the textures/bumpmap? its not even similar to the orginial game. You are getting all fussed up about something that even wasnt supposed to be.

Hunt: Showdown is getting one of the rarest things a game can get: an engine upgrade

"It is gonna be a long technical road" to update Hunt's version of CryEngine.

MadLad430d ago

Great game.
Smaller, but healthy, player base. At least on PC. Very tense game.

bunt-custardly429d ago

If anyone can upgrade the engine then Crytek can. Good news anyway. Hunt looks pretty awesome anyway, but with UE5 a thing now Cryengine beginning to look dated perhaps?

Eonjay429d ago

It was bound to happen. Let's hope that they can update their engine. As good as UE5 looks, we need multiple engines out there. This will prevent all games from looking too samey.

Looking at DF the last three Graphics of the year have been:

Insomniac engine
Red Engine
Decima Engine

I love seeing different engines flex their muscles.

Concertoine428d ago

I do too, but having a dependable and common engine would go a long way toward fixing development cost and time.

Don't really agree on Dead Space being number one. But usually come down to preference. Alot of good games on the list. I was hoping to see Aliens vs Predator by Sierra on the list, as it was a great game. Anyways for me the number one is still Halo but Mass Effect was really good up to the infamous ending of the third game.

Rebel_Scum1155d ago

I would put Flashback on my list. Its got such a great tone and background design. The cutscenes were pretty good too.

DEAD SPACE 2 as number 1? Really? I've only ever played DEAD SPACE 1 (without finishing it) and, sure enough I liked it a lot, and have been yearning for getting to grips with an hd remastered trilogy for the PS4/XBox One/PS5/XBox Series X/S, but what about Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided? Alienation (to quench our thirst for twitching fingers' top-down dual-stick shooters)? Or even Cyberpunk 2077 (once the game has been re-released and all the kinks have been ironed out)?

If not at the #1 spot, it seems to me these games deserved to be on the list somewhere.

But what really strikes me as unfair is, if you're going back to the PS3/XBox 360 era with DS2, how could you forget to mention Killzone 2 & 3? The Resistance games? When it comes to Sci-Fi FPS, it's inadequate not to pay your respects to those stellar franchises! Heck, even the Crysis trilogy should've been there IMHO.

RE7 VR. I'm getting impatient for the RE8 VR reveal!

I also wish they'd hurry up and officially announce/patch Alien Isolation for VR.

TallDarknWavy1293d ago

Honestly, nothing was better designed for sheer psychological horror than the PT demo.
I really hope I can transfer it to PS5.

Fatal Frame! If anyone ever gets the chance, there was a remake of II on the Wii. I suggest a modded Wii/U, or emulator. That, and Fatal Frame 4, are two of the scariest games ever made, hands down. Like "F this, why am I even playing this" scary.
