Oculus Creator: 'I Think We're Going to be the Best For a Long Time'

VRFocus - Founder of Oculus VR and creator of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset Palmer Luckey has stated that he thinks the company will be 'the best' in its field 'for a long time'. Luckey stated as much to VRFocus during an interview at last week's Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) Conference & Expo in Mountain View, California. He reasoned that the company hopes to be the first 'prominent' VR specialist, stating that he thinks Oculus VR will 'stay in front' of the competition such as the PS4's Project Morpheus going forward.

Sony fanboys was waiting for ORift bad news since it wasn't coming to ps4. They was putting all their faith into rumors since last year. Morpheus announced and ORift buyout by Facebook during gdc was like a hailmary

I don't understand the hate for selling to Facebook. If you were in his position, would you say no to 2 billion dollars?

Those of you who kickstarted for $350 or more were purchasing a product. The 1st version of the Oculus headset, and you got what you paid for. You didn't buy stock in the company or sign on as a partner.

With all the Facebook money, Oculus will probably get the consumer version out much earlier than scheduled and have custom made parts rather than settling for scraps from the mobile industry.

Facebook bought Instagram and as far as I can tell has left it alone to do its own thing. I don't think Lucky would have signed on with Facebook if they didn't promise the same thing.

But I'm happy that Sony and other companies are in this space as well. Competition and rivalry drives innovation and for new tech like this, it is exactly what the field needs.

The hate comes from people who never and will never own a business and understand what it takes to own one. They already gave up equity to reach their capital goals to manufacturer OR, there's no way they could've competed with billion dollar corporations working off of investors without giving up 50 percent equity.

Also, Facebook gives them Capital, Manufacturing, marketing, a brand, and financial security to entice devs to that platform. People on the internet live to complain about subjects they know next to nothing about.

The thing about Facebook is that they want all of your information so they can sell it to third parties without compensating you for it. They're always trying to screw you in their Terms and Conditions. They even tried it with Instagram, and there was major backlash for it. They're data mining on a grand scale. Facebook is a free service, where do you think they got the $2 billion to buy OR.

For those going on about frame rates on Morpheus well it has a processor in the headset which is going to take some load off the PS4. Expect games that run on PS4 to be equally well detailed using Morpheus. Project cars is also porting to the Morpheus which is a great sign of it's capabilities.

so you telling me, ps4, thats having trouble keeping up with pc at 1080p is suddenly going to have the same gfx and frame rate while playing on morpheus. seriously? yall try too hard when ps4 is not on top. the thing is this should be obvious. pc will always trump with the hardware.

next thing people are going to start saying morpheus has a gtx 780ti in it. ps fanboys they make up bs on the fly when ps isnt superior.

The PS4 trumps the hell out of my PC, so no...PC will not "always trump with the hardware".

You're making the bush league mistake of assuming that all PCs are running high end (or even mid-range) graphics hardware.

Fun fact: according to Steam, the most common PC GPU used for Steam is a freaking Intel HD 4000 (which would get smoked six ways to Sunday by either console).

making the rift mainly playable to high specs PC would be bad for sales. they'll need to make it playable with lots of different hardware, which won't always be an high end PC.

Most games are indies and not big 3rd party publishers. The market isn't mature enough yet and this will have an impact on early VR titles for sure. I don't want a bunch of re-release titles with VR features, I want a VR game build from the ground up for a great VR experience.

I don't think the PS4 has the hardware chops to handle the best experience with virtual headsets.

When you have a billion dollar company behind your tech..you can say things like these and actually make it happen..

Sony has to make their headset compatible with PC become the standard cause dev's have already stated their dislike of facebook.

Having used neither but having a job interview today I shall pre order the new oculus if I get the job :)

While I think both will be neat, I have a hard time seeing any VR device being popular in the home due to the level of eye strain they would cause. I could definitely see them doing well in Game Centers though where the gamer would use them in more moderation. With arcades starting to become popular in the big cities again, not to mention all the game centers in movie theaters, bowling allies and amusement parks, I could see them doing well if they take that route. But if they are aiming for the home market, I have to agree with the doom sayers that it isn't likely to happen. VR failed in the 90s not because of the graphics or level of immersiveness, but because of cost and eyestrain on long gaming seasons.

First how did you find out the price of the Morpheus.
Second 80% of the studios that are making games for the OR are also porting their games to Morpheus.
Third OR has a bigger market how exactly, right now they are focused on pc when Morpheus is for the PS4 but could also be for pc as well. Sony said it may support pc then that would make Morpheus with the bigger market.
Fourth Yeah they are making games specific for Morpheus but who is to say that Drive Club did not add support during the year long delay never know. Who said when making a Morpheus game you can't toss in a third person view.

I think OR will provide the best VR experience unless Sony can manage to do something REALLY clever with the Morpheus on a technological level. both are still developing their tech but to be real I think OR will be the best from an experience standpoint.

Sony would want the morpheus to be cheap, and by the time it comes out I believe only select games will have support for it, much like 3D on Ps3 wich worked but looked kind of awful since the resolution would be dropped down quite a bit.

I dont think we are going to see any aaa morpheus game this gen in glorious fluid 1080p. Unless they come up with something clever that makes VR a lot less demanding it is not going to be as good as the flat non VR experience.

Perhaps somehow future consoles will have specific hardware that deals with 3D/VR so that devs will not have to downgrade the games in order to fit VR/3D conversion within the consoles workload budgets.

As far as the headsets themselfes go it is still way up in the air what the final spec will be for the first retail versions.
