Who Is The Average Gamer?

Cambridge-based games studio Jagex created a profile of the "Average Gamer" from a survey of over 1,000 gamers and it appears that, contrary to the stereotype of sweaty nerds with no social life, being a gamer in 2014 means life is pretty good

"Almost half of all players consider themselves casual gamers, while over 1.6 million (.03%) of the UK claim they are closet gamer"

psychedelicfrog3637d ago

This statistic is absolute nonsense.

So 0.03% of the UK is 1.6 million people?

Meaning by their calculations, 100% of the UK is 5.3 billion people?!

Or if they made a mistake and meant 0.3%, 100% of the UK would be 53 million people, when back in 2012 the consensus told us there are at least 63 million people!

that article thumbnail looks creepy AF.

MysticStrummer3637d ago

I don't know about "creepy AF" but it does look surprisingly female. If I had tried to imagine such a thing at all I would have expected the face to look more male.

The average gamer has a penigina, absolutely adors to drink some beer while watching football with friends, and is a real friggin' badass at making adorable cupcakes for significant other.

Everyone plays games these days, theyve gone so mainstream.
"The Average Gamer" according to that video looks no different than a video about "The Average Person" would look, proving my point really. That is the most plain and generic face Ive ever seen.

i am an average gamer who plays a lot of games yet i don't consider my self hard core gamer. but what is an average game? is there a difference between average game and a casual gamer?

so confusing i am just a gamer

kingdip903637d ago

A casual gamer and a hard core gamer is not defined by how much someone plays games it is defined by the kind of games the gamer plays.

A casual game is a game that you can just pick up and play and have fun with a minimal investment of time, something simple that you can play for say 5 minutes and have fun, mostly skill based games that are fun, brief and don't require much thinking, like angry birds or wii sports.

A hard core game is a game in which you have to invest many hours to complete, with a lot of character development (either in story or in stats). Rpgs like final fantasy fall into this list as do many other genres.

FPS games kind of fall into both of these categories depending on the player. Some people just like to go online for 20 mins shoot people up and have a quick laugh and then leave while others will work tirelessly for hours trying to level up their character and improve their ranking on whatever leader board system may be in place.

I don't think those are the 'proper' definitions.

A casual is someone who plays casually (hence the name), where as a hardcore player takes their stuff very serious.

You can casually play World of Warcraft, where you just jump on and level a little bit and have no idea about the game.

You can also number crunch to increase your DPS to the absolute maximum whilst studying raid logs to find out how to squeeze out even more damage. This takes a tremendous amount of dedication and would be considered hardcore.

Regardless of genre or game you can be hardcore of casual. Are you saying that if you play farmville for 12 hours a day, and run simulations for absolute optimised builds whilst tweaking settings, you aren't as 'hardcore' as someone who plays final fantasy for 5 hours a week?

Mutant-Spud3637d ago

I guess the difference is whether you regard gaming as a pastime or a hobby.
It's the same with any leisure activity, some people like model trains and are happy just to buy off the shelf engines and wagons, others like to build them all from scratch. Some people like the social aspect of Golf, others are interested in improving their handicap.
