PS Vita Reviews has gone back to the PSP gen today and given us their thoughts on the PSP remake of the first game in the Persona franchise.
"Persona is definitely a game that feels dated. Through the artstyle, clichéd storyline, and the slow battle system, this game is definitely an old RPG. There are also a few things that are a bit harder in this title, such as Negotiating with Demons to get spell-cards in order to use new Personas. It definitely isn’t as advanced as the newer titles, but for a Persona fan or classic RPG fan, it’s a game that should definitely be played at least once."
It goes without saying that the Shin Megami Tensei subseries, Persona, has become one of the most beloved RPG series in recent memory, but it didn’t start out that way.

It's a shame they didn't just talk about Shin Megami Tensai in general
Twinfinite Writes: With the release of Persona 5 we take a look at some absolutely stunning cosplay from across the long-running RPG series.
I don't think the story is cliched or dated. Imho, the story a bit complex with some Jung psychology here and there and all the main characters had pretty interesting background too.
The gameplay also awesome with negotiation with demons are decided by how you can judge the right character of the demons. In the beginning it's a bit trial and error, but soon you will get the hang of it.
And of course the awesome music. The remix by Shoji Meguro gave some fresh and cool vibe.
Personally, i think 6.5/10 is to low for Persona 1. 8/10 is more like it imho.
