Doom 4 multiplayer outsourced and what that could mean

Things don’t sound good at Doom 4 developer Id Software. And it sounds like the multiplayer beta you’ll get access to for buying Wolfenstein might not even be made by Id themselves.

majiebeast4054d ago

ID is in shambles, the entire ID tech team left in February to go work for Occulus Rift. The studio went from 140 employees to 50 in 2 years.

tylercolp4054d ago

Yeah, it doesn't sound good at all.

majiebeast4054d ago (Edited 4054d ago )

Bethesda needs to step in, because it seems all this is caused by office politics, even the HR director left.

"The lack of professionalism: Expect lots of inappropriate jokes, comments and a generally unprofessional work environment. Our HR director quit recently over the many internal issues."

Seems to be whats left of ID is a husk.

You hear tales of publishers being to hands on with studios, and then you have stories like this where Bethesda seems to be to hands off.

I think they were really counting on rage and megatexture to pan out to be something much more revolutionary than it panned out being.

I REALLY hope they bring revolutionary new tech to the table like they did with previous doom quake and doom 3 titles. Lots of times bringing a new engine and techniques that wowed the industry.

If anyone can do it its Id and carmack, but I've lost a lot of confidence in them with the whole rage ordeal. Maybe the whole dx12 tiled resources and megatexture could work to where the resolution wasn't so limited and blurry. dunno.

If they've outsourced the MP that tells me they are concentrating all efforts on SP, carmack and the rest of the team have said on multiple occaisions/documentaries that they are ALL ABOUT THE SP experience as that is their bread and butter.

Not to mention with so many multiplayer heavyweights on the market why even bother with MP most of the time the community dies within months unless the MP is a runaway success.

This situation is starting to sound a little like Alien Colonial Marines

diesoft4054d ago

don't you say that! don't you ever say that! I'm not listening to you!

amazinglover4054d ago

ID was in shambles or headed that way before ID tech team left it's been a long time since they released a must have game that sold of any significance. It was also a dumb decision to not license ID tech 5 and try and compete with Unreal Engine 3 out of the 4 games using look really good minus Doom 4 which we haven't seen yet.

veegeeeffex4054d ago

I'll assume that ZeniMax ran the numbers and concluded that trying to license that technology was a lost cause. Back in 2009 UE3 was the dominant force in the game engine market - and the year after Unity jumped into the fray and started offering a much cheaper solution to developers.

Doom 4 multiplayer outsourced and what that could mean

OK this can be a GREAT THING!!! I'm gonna be positive for once seeing how I want Doom 4 to be AWESOME!

Bethesda steps in and allows Doom 4 SP mode to continue on with all needed resources and NO added pressure on the Dev team because Doom 4 needs to have a stellar SP mode.

Then they outsource the MP to someone with proven MP mode experience to add new things and not take away from the SP experience.

Hell you can even sell Doom 4 MP as a DLC bundle with some New SP content but the SP needs to be FIRE because that's what Doom is all about!

Bethesda needs to close ID since all of the original talent have left the studio

porkChop4054d ago

Yup. I'd rather see them continue id franchises with talented new studios like they've done with MachineGames and Wolfenstein: The New Order. id Software is dead, so they should just shut it down.

WeAreLegion4054d ago

What it means is that DOOM Beta key from Wolfenstein will be useless for two years.

Razputin4054d ago

Its going to be crappy and dead like Doom 3s was.

Razputin4053d ago

Talking about the Multiplayer.

This is what the article questions.

The game was great.

Matt6664053d ago

oh right sorry misunderstood

barb_wire4054d ago (Edited 4054d ago )

Well, guess this is the last release by i.d

After this I can see ZeniMax closing the Richardson office and moving any development on i.d IP's in house at Bethesda.

Still, can't say I'm shocked, there has been a brain drain of talent there at i.d for sometime now, what happened this past February is the final nail in the coffin.

Still a shame though.

majiebeast4054d ago

Yeah. Doesn't help that team leaders only want to hire students or people they know.

What's cool is you can see some of the animations they kept and revised for 2016.

nirwanda1641d ago

When you strip everything back you can really see how great the animation is.
It's amazing how far games have come.

glenn19791641d ago

For me its always interesting to see some prototype of a game of something else and see the final product on why they go another direction in the end

RaidenBlack1641d ago

My favorite is the MGS:Rising vs MGR:Revengeance.(I preferred the Kojima's one)
Another interesting one is Splinter Cell Conviction Concept vs Retail

spicelicka1641d ago

I don't see what is "COD-like" here? Just because there's 2 seconds footage with ironsight?

Concertoine1641d ago

The devs were openly going for the cinematic shooter style that was popular in the years this was developed. COD-like Doom was pretty much the pitch.

Fluke_Skywalker1641d ago

Looks pish, no wonder it got canned.

Every Doom Game Ever

Whilst the FPS genre has since had a tonne of fantastic franchises, such as Quake, Unreal and Serious Sam, Doom remains at the top of the pile, and has one of the best comeback stories in video game history. Doom is almost 30 years running, and has even bled into other mediums such as feature films and novels. As it has been going for so long, there have been a large number of entries in the series, and there are probably a few you never played. This is every Doom game ever.

Why Development Stopped On DOOM 4

According to ID Executive Producer Marty Stratton, DOOM 4 was scrapped because "it was more 'DOOM' in name than really anything."

Dabigsiebowski1943d ago

Because they wanted to punish John Carmack.

AK911943d ago

From reports apparently Doom 4 was shaping up to be COD but set in the DOOM universe, honestly really glad that didn’t happen.

Profchaos1943d ago

Pretty much they wanted to make it to meet what was selling at the time and in doing so it lost the soul of what makes doom doom.

MadLad1943d ago

Even Doom 3 did that, despite being a solid game all the same. Not mind blowing, in my opinion, but a solid title.

1942d ago
Segata1942d ago

Because it was Call of Duty with generic demons on Earth. Looked worse than the 2009 Wolfenstein. They made the right call.
