Fallout 3: No Mandatory Install for Playstation 3

It seems not everyone is jumping on the mandatory installs bandwagon.

That is because Fallout devs are using data duplication techniques. PS3 version probably won't be a port and will probably run more than the 7.5GB in the 360 version.

Games with mandatory installs don't use data duplication. That is to all the haters looking at MGS4 and saying the 50GB is data duplication

have a harddrive it makes developers work that bit harder to make the same game without the install on the 360 for all those arcade owners.

but many games have proven that if you learn the ps3's architecture installs need not be the way on sonys machine either,but if an install actually improves the game tremendously then go for it.

The developer have experience on the PS3 with Oblivion so they know what they are doing. Two option are data duplication are mandatory installs. For a game like this data duplication is a good option, but installs are good for games with no loading screens whats so ever. Data Duplication is the same option the used for Oblivion so they know thats what works for them.

Having the game run as good as it can is the most important thing for me. and if they can do that without mandatory install thats just showing that they know their way arround the hardware.

I really don't see the big deal with mandatory installs.

For those that hate it though, developers should include a mini-game to keep you eager and desperate gamers occupied during installation. From what I recall, Tekken 4 had this feature? A Pac Man-like car game? I'm not too sure. It could be another game I'm thinking about.

Just what I wanted, a good game to not force this mandatory install on us!!!!

I installed haze on PS#, 4gb!! and the loading was still about a minute or two each time. Why did Haze have it in the first place?? cause I didn't see it.

deleting games means you would need to install them again just to play them.

that is the sort of thing i associate with pc gaming, not console gaming.

@solidt12 - i agree with what you are saying about deleting installs from traded games, but i own a 40gb ps3 - if i have 10 games that need 5 gb installs then i would not have enough space for them all, which makes me feel unhappy and pressured into upgrading the hdd

Well if you already beat that game then you probably won't need that install anymore at least not while you are playing a new game. For instance I wouldn't be playing GTA IV when GTA V comes out. Another point what if you trade in a game, you don't need that install anymore. But If you are like me and bought a 20gig system then you really might need to upgrade. I have 250gig hardrive now but I think you can get by with a 40 gig system. I think that most developer will stop making installs mandatory on there 2nd and 3rd PS3 games.

Dude I Wanted to be a HAZE lover but the game is average and DOES suffer from horrible pop-in (see mantel solider armor). IF you say it doesn't you are either blind or you haven't played the game.

I want a PS3 when Killzone2 drops. I don't want to have to spend $400 for a console then more money just to game after about 10 games are stored to my HDD. I just hope that this trends stops and it is optional. It is still good that Sony made the hdd STANDARD in all SKU's.

Oblivion was bettter on PS3 correct? Also It was there first time to program for PS3. Fallout will be there 2nd game on PS3.

I know they had 1 extra year to make Oblivion, but so did capcom with Lost planet

I was hoping a developer would make a multiplatform game without mandatory installs. I think this game will finally be used to compare the benefit between a game install and no game install.
It will be interesting to see how much loading and performance is improved when the game is running without install and with it.
Since the xbox 360 version will not have any installs... it will be interesting to see which game performs better xbox 360 and PS3 without installs... and xbox 360 and PS3; PS3 with installs...

the blu ray drive is slower than DVD at this stage in the game, so the mandatory installs usually give us quicker load times since most of the data can be accessed from the HDD (which is much quicker) than the disc. I can't possibly see how you didn't understand this to begin with, especially since you are one of the most frequent trolls in PS3 stories. The devs never said that mandatory installs for multiplat games make them better on PS3, they generally just give us a couple second quicker loading time than the 360, and a much quicker loading time than it would be from the disc.

@butterfinger - uhhh no... the mandatory installs does not give the PS3 better loading time then the xbox 360 games... if so prove it.. show me a source that show that.... it simply allows the PS3 version to be playable or to not have dramatic larger loading than the xbox 360... Multiplatform developers arent trying to make the games better on one platform over the other... they are trying to match it... if the PS3 blu-ray drive would allow loading to be the same as the xbox 360 without the installs the installs would not be required... and where you do see a difference and the PS3 version has less loading... the difference is 1-2 seconds... which wouldn't make sense to make a gamer wait 10-20 minutes to install.. just to give a 1-2 loading benefit over the xbox 360... that's stupid.. it's a workaround to allow the game to be playable... Period.

Show me that multiplatform game that's a nightmare in terms of loading (30+ second plus faster)... by the way.. game release at the same time...

here is a loading comparison between the xbox 360 GTA4 and the PS3 where the PS3 has required installs... yet the xbox 360 loads faster...

Any person with a bit of intelligence can see that in this case I am comparing the load time from the HDD to the load time from the disc itself. Maybe reading comprehension doesn't come easy to you, therefore I will continue to break this down for you as simply as possible. Once again I was referencing the disc, but this time I also compared it to the 360 except I used the word generally, meaning overall or usually, but not always. Damn.

Good to see they actually use the space they have on the disk for something instead of leaving them blank. I still don't mind installs when they mean a boost in loading times/decrease pop-up. There's always the option to delete the unneeded data.

Kinda odd, because whats the point of having a default HDD when you don't want developers to take benefits from it. If the installing the game data on to HDD saves loading times etc. then its good. The only question I have is why in the world is Haze installing 5 gig on HDD, it doesn't even look good nor does it have anything special?

what happens if you RE-STORE your PS3 and you loose all your data.

You will not loose anything when you do a restore. Anything that was backed up will be restored. All game saves are stored in a separate folder and is unaffected by deleting a game install. Just make sure you do a backup before you do a restore to get the latest data.

If you backup your system you will not loose anything.

backup -> new drive -> restore = nothing lost

It is a very easy process. I changed out my drive in less that 5 minutes. Although, the backup/restore does take time.

The reason you have a hard drive is to store stuff on it!! If the game can operate better with an install, then so be it. At least if you have a PS3 this should not be an issue. If it is an issue and you can afford that much cash on so many games, then obviously you can afford to upgrade to a much larger drive than the 40,60 or 80GB that you already have.

I can't believe so many people whine about installs!
