Keep it alive? Survival Horror has been dead for a long while now. I can't think of one game that was released last gen that is true survival horror. Hopefully TEW changes that.
The genre isn't dead. It's just been neglected because developers have been trying to make games that cater to everyone. Outlast, although it was originally a pc game, clearly demonstrates the potential of this genre if a survival horror game is properly made. Making the player feel helpless or outmatched is the key to a successful survival game. These days developers are too busy worrying about casual gamers who want guns, bazookas, multiplayer, and shiny graphics instead of creating a game that is designed to get an emotional reaction from the player. Resident evil is the perfect example of why the genre has been lacking for years. After the 3rd installment of RE, Capcom took the low road and tried to make RE games that appeal to everyone. Developers should stick to the concept or genre of the game. For survival horror, the equation is simple; will I be afraid of enemies if I have a gatling gun with unlimited ammo or will I fear the enemy if I know I have to fight the enemies with a bat, a butter knife, or my bare hands? Just my opinion.
