Microsoft launches first universal apps, comes closer to ‘Buy once, play anywhere’
One of the most frustrating limitations of the Windows Store in Windows 8 is the way that applications are segregated across the ecosystem. Up until now, there’s been no app sharing across the Xbox, Windows 8, and Windows Phone digital divide — each product family had its own distinct app store. Developers that wanted to support all three ecosystems had to build three different versions of the product, and consumers had to buy it three times to get access across all three devices. Today, that’s changing. Microsoft has launched two paid titles (Skulls of the Shogun and Halo: Spartan Assault) with support for both Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 (Xbox One support is coming at a later date).
