Sony own Spider-man right ? Why can't they make the game exclusive ?

ToastyMcNibbles4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Sony holds the license for the movies. Activison holds the license to produce the games and have been for a long time now. As far as the listing is concerned I'm sure it's an error considering how close the game is to the release date. Could be wrong though.

pedrof934076d ago

They're making a game which is about a movie that belongs to Sony. I don't know anything about whatsoever in this law/license matter, but it must be that Sony has a word on which console the game goes ? No ?

Do not give up, MS!!!!!

FriedGoat4076d ago

Why are you acting as if SONY movie studios have anything to do with their console business.

It's clear this would be activision's decision, and its most likely an issue with certification. Maybe they just cant be bothered to jump through hoops for a game that ain't exactly going to sell boatloads.

alexkoepp4076d ago

I'd say since almost no effort goes into movie related games, that whomever what producing look the the X1 architecture like a CELL processor and decided, "NOPE"

morganfell4076d ago

This is an odd game license because Sony actually does have a stake in this due to it being part of the movie license. They do not have sole control but they are involved in the game licensing in this instance. It falls along the same lines as lunchboxes based on the movie rather than the comic.

Sony actually would benefit in having this game on more platforms.

sonarus4076d ago

i wonder why this is the case this seems curious. Maybe the Xone version was hard to develop for but this seems unlikely, considering spidey games have never been that tasking.
Game also isn't a huge seller which to me rules out the possibility of Xbox or Sony paying for exclusivity.
Perhaps activision is concerned about the sales gap between ps4 and Xbox one but this also seems unlikely because of how early in the cycle both consoles are and a 3million sales gap sure doesn't seem insurmountable.
This is very curious indeed

morganfell4076d ago

This will upset some but the most likely reason is the developer was having difficulty achieving a resolution and framrate that would not subject the game to ridicule and reduce sales to the point it would be unprofitable.

Only a certain percentage of any console userbase is going to buy a particular game. Considering the installbase for the X1, if bad PR for the X1 version damaged sales, it would reduce and already small number to one sure to put that version in the red.

mewhy324076d ago

I think this is boiling down to xbone poor sales numbers. Activision doest want to release a game that they sink millions into developing for a machine that isn't selling well and they probably cant match PS4 visuals on.
This could be a bad sign of things to come for ms and sounds very similar to what is happening to the Wiiu

Clogmaster4076d ago

But I thought that XOne and PS4 had somewhat similar architecture. Can they not just develop it on the PS4 and then just turn down the graphics so it at least runs on XOne? Just release it as is, most movie games aren't even optimized right?

DOMination-4075d ago

Isnt the Xbox One like the second fastest selling console ever.. behind only the PS4? Sony have a great machine at a great price and its doing fantastically but I wouldn't really call Xbox One sales poor.

animegamingnerd4076d ago

they only own the rights to make spier-man films and they can actually lose the rights and reverting back to marvel if they go a certain amount of time without making a spider-man movie

TitanUp4076d ago

is that why we see so many spiderman movies? thats kinda a weird deal.

animegamingnerd4076d ago

@Farsendor1 Prior to the first Ironman that was every marvel film (Xmen, Ghost Rider, Fantastic 4, Daredevil etc) was made due to the fact they had to sell movie rights or can bankrupt cause of some of stupid things they did in the 90's

Blaze9294076d ago

Funny, Beenox just told everyone the game runs at 1080p 30FPS on both PS4 and Xbox One:

https://twitter.com/beenoxt...

So besides "corporate politic$" - there should be no reason for this; especially when no reason is given.

sinspirit4076d ago

Sony doesn't own Spiderman. They own Spiderman for movies. Activision owns Spiderman for games. They have nothing to do with each other.

LordMaim4076d ago

Sure they do. It's merchandise/multimedia exploitation of a movie property. Marvel gets a cut of Sony's cut, but it's Sony's sub-license of a movie property.

That said, Sony can't force Activision to only release on one platform. That's part of the licensing agreement. It isn't, as Blaze939 suggests, "corporate politic$". If anything, since Activision is a third party studio, it makes more financial sense to let Activision release on as many platforms as possible.

sinspirit4076d ago

@Lord Maim

Sony and Activision have two different licenses. Could they work together to have more consistency between the game and the movie? Sure. But, do they have control over either companies Spiderman work? Not at all.

DOMination-4075d ago

Disney "owns" Spiderman and you can be sure they'll be wanting the movies back. With Sonys financial position they'll be willing to sell too.

candy_mafia4076d ago

Probably just an error...would totally suck if Xbox Oner's couldn't get their Spidey fix.

Fingers crossed this is rectified :)

Abriael4076d ago

Unlikely for it to be an "error" the pictures of the boxes have been changed on the official website removing those with the Xbox One version in. How do you make that kind of mistake?

candy_mafia4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Maybe you're right Abz. I guess it's all just wild speculation at this point...

But, I can't see Sony denying Xbox One owners this game...they don't even own the franchise, just the license to produce the Movies.

If it is canned, it must be down to the publisher. The Spiderman franchise is a big deal, these titles sell even if mediocre. That's potentially millions of dollars in revenue lost right there!

Abriael4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Yeah. It's been confirmed. TBD if just delayed or canned completely.

By the way, this is a move by Activision, not Sony.

G20WLY4076d ago

Abriael, since it's now been confirmed, shouldn't this now be listed as 'news' rather than 'rumour', and the question mark be removed from the title?

Odd situation, but now official word has been received from Activision, it's best people understand this isn't mere speculation.

WeAreLegion4076d ago

I'm sure it's just a mistake. I don't think they would just cancel it like that.

MasterCornholio4076d ago

It would be really weird if they did.

Eonjay4076d ago

Which is exactly what looks like just happened. Interesting.

Neo Nugget4076d ago

Well it is a little odd that its missing from both the page art and the drop down list.

jimbobbeers4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Probably been delayed a couple of weeks like the Lego Marvel Superheroes game was.

G20WLY4076d ago

Nope, it's been "delayed or canned completely, to be determined" - Activision.

Beenox on the Trials and Tribulations of Developing a Spider-Man Game

OnlySP spoke to Beenox co-studio head and creative director Thomas Wilson about the company’s work on Spider-Man games. Between 2001 and 2007, Beenox did not develop a single original game. Instead, the studio worked as a porting house. Beenox’s experience with movie tie-ins led to the studio’s original work on The Bee Movie in 2007 and Monsters vs. Aliens in 2009, and its experience porting Spider-Man games resulted in the studio being handed the reigns to develop original Spider-Man titles in 2010.

CarlDechance2470d ago

Nice read. Wilson's candor is refreshing. He flat out says Activision did not give Beenox the budget, resources, or the time they needed. Really is too bad Activision squandered their opportunities with the Spider-man franchise. They could have made some really great games. Activision being Activision.

Mister-Zay2470d ago

I wonder if we could have gotten better Destiny games if Bungie didn't go to Activision.

Profchaos2470d ago

Undoubtedly the quality would be much higher

UltraNova2470d ago

Activision's quick buck -low quality policy at its best. No wonder the first Spiderman game made by a competent dev with all the time and money needed turned out to be a stellar game overall that did justice to the source material...

Profchaos2470d ago

Activision being activision they dismantled neversoft probably the best studio they ever owned and they ran spiderman, Tony hawk, guitar hero and debeatably cod into the ground.

They have had a number of mega ips in their stable but they continue to pump out uninspired sequals for them until everyone grows tired.

Happy to see spiderman get another life with insomniac.

shuvam092470d ago (Edited 2470d ago )

Always felt the same...
Beenox Spidey games felt like they put effort into it...
But we all know that Activision is no Sony when it comes to budget, expectation and patience for these type of games...

Always felt bad for this team. They did a lot of things right, but Activision screwed them over at every turn.

Don’t forget about Spider Man 2 The PC Version which is worse than the console version. Web of Shadow PS2 version is also the worse than PS3/X360.

Edito2475d ago

It's just me or the title is misleading?

UnSelf2475d ago

at first read it appears so, but no it's grammatically sound

Inzo2475d ago

Best Spider Man game to date has to be Spider Man 2.
Worst Spider Man game to date I will have to go with The Amazing Spider Man 2.

vork772475d ago

i like The Amazing Spider-Man 1 game

antz11042475d ago

Me too, totally doesnt belong on the list.

GoldeneyeOO72475d ago

The absolute WORST Spider Man game is, by far, the PSVR installment. I'd have more fun playing with dog shit than that game.
