GAME Shutting Down its Microsoft Exclusive Xbox-Only GAME Boxpark London Store

GAME is among leading UK based online video game retailers, it also has a large chain of local stores which cater to the customers’ need for gaming products such as consoles and game discs. Recently, GAME announced that it is shutting down its Xbox-only GAME Boxpark video game products store that is located in London’s trendy Shoreditch area.

business must be slow lately. Jokes aside how stupid was it to have a store for just 1 platform.

Naga3676d ago

Even if the Xbox was dominating sales, I can't imagine this would be a good business model.

But on another note... why is a story about one store closing down after its short-term contract expired somehow newsworthy?

Mr Pumblechook3676d ago

What an absolutely atrocious business idea. GAME well and truly ballsed up by accepting that sponsorship. They decided to make an Microsoft exclusive store that was focused on Xbox hardware and games... at a time when the the Xbone was nearly £80 quid more than the PS4 never predicting that the UK gaming map was turning blue. I went in the day after launch and it was chockabloc with people browsing but not really buying. I even saw one guy ask (I kid you not) if they sell PS3 games LOL! But since then it has been really, really quiet.

If it had worked it would have been kept open but the venture was a failure but the BS PR speak is just unrelenting. Xbox Marketing director said “This was a pop-up concept store which was a key part of the most successful Xbox console launch ever." I'd trust him more if he was honest and just said "we messed up, the Xbone isn't selling and it was a mistake to make a store dedicated to it."

Angeljuice3676d ago (Edited 3676d ago )

@Mr Pumblechook

The store was set up well before the Xbox One was released (for the 360). The only slightly newsworthy part was the fact that it was set up on a site where all the stores are old shipping containers.

SpringHeeledJack3676d ago

Is it any surprise from a company that hasn't changed it's business model from the last one that bankrupted them. They got bailed out and have gone straight back to over pricing their goods.

Their pulse headset £125 while on amazon it was £90, when asked if they could budge on price they just said no n gave a dirty look. Poor service+high prices.

Phoenix763676d ago

@SpringHeeledJack That's so true about over pricing. Also, if you find a game on the website marked at say £45, the store will sell it for £50. Yet if ask them to sell it to you at the internet price...... then...... well you can guess the response you get.

Microsoft must've sponsored.

Alsybub3676d ago

It was essentially part of a PR campaign for the Xbox launch. It was planned that way.

Also, many companies open stores for one platform, or even one product. It's all for show. A good example is the Apple Store in Covent Garden. I swear there's more staff than customers and it's enormous.

I went in to the HTC Store in Copenhagen a few months ago and the only product they stocked was the One M7 and the store only had one on display, on a pedestal, in the middle of an empty store.

SniperControl3676d ago

Wasn't this shop open well before the X1 launch?

Hicken3676d ago

But Apple stores are run by Apple, not a third party that also sells the competition's product elsewhere.

TitanUp3676d ago

seems like it was a short deal anyways. maybe to test the water

GuruMeditation3676d ago

Exactly. Imagine all the business you'd be losing out on by being mono-platform... <laughs uncomfortably and quietly shelves his plans for the 'Game: OUYA' store in southampton>

randomass1713676d ago

360 was a massive seller. Last generation it made more sense. That said GAME has been heading the way of bankruptcy for a while now.

hkgamer3676d ago

the box park is basically shops made out of shipping containers in shoreditch.

shoreditch is meant to be an area fpr cool savvy young adults, who i call snobby art hip people.

the box park is quite cool looking ough, but i never noticed a game store there. its most likely used for promotion. looking at the layout for the store ij the picture. i doubt people actually buy stuff frpm there.

MegaRay3676d ago

Make me wonder, how many flame bait articles we got this week? I bet 20...

randomass1713676d ago

Management of articles here could be better, yeah. :/

MasterD9193676d ago

Next-gen consoles did not anticipate the "drought" currently.

I agree though...this store was bound to failure from the moment of conception by limiting itself in such a way.

randomass1713676d ago

This would make more sense for last generation when 360 was the big money maker for a while.

cfc783676d ago

GAME would never buy into this on a regular basis we all know how much they love to extract the most profit possible.

OC_MurphysLaw3676d ago

MS is pushing their own Microsoft stores, ala Apple, selling all things Microsoft of late so this concept seems a bit dated. No doubt they originally were behind this idea to test the market but I don't think a single platform based video game only store can long term be successful. I am sure MS decided to stop any kind of monetary support to sponsor the GAME store and thus why GAME decided to pull the plug on this outlet.

Death3676d ago

Sony also had their own Sony Stores. Many have been closed down in the last year. I like the Sony store much more than the Microsoft store since it had a much broader selection of products. I spent quite a bit at my local Sony store and was sad to it shut down. I dropped close to $2000 on my HD cam corder and purchased the extended warranty since the service their was always good. I'm pretty sure that's where I bought my PS3 at launch and the last Sony tv I owned.

In my opinion, the Apple, Sony and Microsoft stores are a great idea since they all showcase products you might not see or overlook in regular retail stores.

randomass1713676d ago

I wasn't aware of designated Sony stores. I was only aware of Nintendo World lol.

You can't even login to check your details without being out into a 1hr queuing system, I've got no chance tomorrow morning.

asweplay1323d ago

Not to mention their "late morning" is super vague as well, which will make it harder for you to know when to queue!

All the best dude!

Unspoken1322d ago (Edited 1322d ago )

Guys check this for a chuckle...

Father__Merrin1323d ago

Bigman4k1322d ago (Edited 1322d ago )

Yup ima try again tomorrow to get one but im not getting my hopes up because i already know its a 50/50 chance

vfl5231323d ago

Sony is also sending out direct preorder emails again. I just got mine!

Challengerscatpack1323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

May the odds be ever in your favor. 🤞

I just learned yesterday I accidentally bought 3 Xbox Series X’s to go with my PS5 from target. Websites were so broken it would just crash and I didn’t realize I got anything until I saw my emails. Thankfully I have friends that wanted them, free flyer miles.

asweplay1323d ago

I lucked out with my Xbox, as a retailer no one was expecting stocked them the next day due to issues, and was actually courteous enough to send emails with the exact time of pre-order, so I went in and quickly snatched one! No breaking or anything.

Seriously considering them for future purchases from now on.

Challengerscatpack1323d ago

Nice, that is good luck! These console launches are a nightmare! Pre-ordering my PS4 was easy, I went straight to Amazon the second they announced it and I bought one up in seconds.

isarai1323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

Does this ACTUALLY mean tomorrow and not tonight? Lol

No but seriously just give an exact time please

Challengerscatpack1323d ago

Do you not have Twitter guys in the UK following this? I know in America I followed wario? Or whatever and he had like to the minute updates and I was able to snag the Xbox and PS5. It was never not frustrating but without him I would have never got the PS5 the first day.

isarai1323d ago

Im in the US, Link me bro!

Challengerscatpack1323d ago

Him, Geoff Keighley or IGN deals were all awesome for me. He seemed to be the first and the others seemed to follow though.

You Had To Queue Longer Than an Hour to Get an Xbox Series X in the UK

GAME UK is just about to go live with its UK pre-orders for the next generation of Xbox at the time of this article. However, if like me you have decided to login to GAME this morning, you will notice that there is currently a huge queue before you can login. You might even notice the site not loading as well due to the demand.

Nailed mine on Amazon UK. Didnt show till 8.10am. Then the link kept crashing the site. Finally worked at 8.15 placed the order then the page crashed. Got confirmation by email. Page won't load now. Also tried xbox store, added to cart, on checkout it crashed and then it said I had reached my maximum order number and couldn't add it to my basket after that. So glad I got the email from Amazon confirming the order, Phew! Now the wait begins...

asweplay1325d ago

Congrats! Planning to pick up any certain games at launch?

We are still in the queue for 50 more minutes!

2cents1325d ago

Thanks dude!
Damn, I hope you get it!
I'll be going for Yakuza like a Dragon, then Scorn, The Medium & Cyberpunk when they launch in the following weeks /months. Also lots of gamepass stuff I've been waiting to try... come on Nov 10th!!! :D

2cents1325d ago

Agros still showing availability just now! Just got an email from them, maybe check it out?

asweplay1325d ago

@2cents
Thanks for that, sadly that page isn't working either. We just finished our Game queue and the site basically crashed! :D

asweplay1325d ago (Edited 1325d ago )

Update: Site crashed after the game queue finished :D

EasilyTheBest1325d ago

Game site crashed at 10am after n hour of waiting...

asweplay1325d ago

We got a brief glimmer of hope later in the afternoon when it came back up, but we were put in another queue and it sold out in 10 minutes!

Neonridr1325d ago

good to see there is positive demand this time for the Xbox systems.

Battlestar231325d ago

Goof for Xbox but Sony will best them again for the 4th generation in a row. I'm glad Microsoft is putting up a good fight by buying studios just means Sony will up their game with their studios in the end gamers will win the true winners.

asweplay1325d ago

Definitely glad to see Xbox selling out like this! Same with Playstation makes me relieved that there is still a good demand for traditional consoles, as much as the pundits keep saying these won't last. More consoles out there is generally good for gamers, as it means more great games!

1324d ago
averagejoe261324d ago (Edited 1324d ago )

They sold out last gen at launch too. Every new console does. Still sold horribly overall though when the gen came to a close.

Neonridr1324d ago

ok, so that automatically makes it true this gen?

GoodGuy091325d ago

If I was getting next gen this year, I wouldve stood in line at least 4hrs considering the huge demand.

elazz1325d ago

An hour? That doesn't seem too long to be honest compared to some other things.

Especially when you compare the times of camping in front of stores for midnight ps3 launch :o those were the days :p

UK retailer GAME ‘plans to close 40 stores’

UK retailer GAME says it plans to close 40 stores following a review of its property portfolio, unless it can convince landlords to reduce rents.

videogameschronicle.com
lnfiniteLoop1581d ago (Edited 1581d ago )

why should landlords reduce GAME property rent... there a risk for starters, already gone bust, and started up again...

time2die1581d ago (Edited 1581d ago )

Game ruined the retail game industry with there greed and destruction of other places such as Gamestation which they bought and shut down just a few years later.

I only use them when i want to trade in games....Period, there prices are £10 to £15 more for a lot of games i buy online from other retailers such as shopto.

Such a shame they are only real stores left on the retail side that have the games on the day of release, yes i know supermarkets ,argos and others do games, but you try going to that store on the release of a game and try getting it, they come in weeks later and not always, the only games they tend to have are games such as call of duty.

And you think of basically who owns most of Game 85%, sports direct ,that says it all ?

The Wood1581d ago

With the higher adoption rate of digital purchases, non gaming retailers selling games and the yoy rent increases I'ts no surprise. Their prices were high but that's the retail vs online battle all shops face

sprinterboy1581d ago

That's the exact reason I don't use GAME, they take the piss.
I recommend you go CEX they offer £10 more than GAME every day.
I traded in @cex after I checked GAME trade in prices on spiderman, gow, Res2 etc all vastly more at cex. Once I completed DS I got £32 from cex yet GAME offered £22 same as res2 etc and spiderman.

Toiletsteak1581d ago

I would say it sucks for those who are losing their jobs but fukk GAME, the one by me has the worst staff I've ever seen.

xTonyMontana1581d ago

Not going to try and justify them as staff can be assholes but they do have it rough. Most are passionate gamers too yet most of their dealings with gamers are negative because they get called out on their ripoff prices. Must be rough though when you think about it when you're literally made to try and sell crap nobody wants and repeat the line about trade ins despite the fact literally ever gamer in this country is aware of and avoids GAME's shitty trade in prices.

CDbiggen1581d ago (Edited 1581d ago )

Years ago, game was alright, It's where I bought a lot of classic games, but over the years they became somewhere for me to completely avoid. For starters they immediately would clear out the pre-owned old games and consoles the second the next gen ones would come out. You could argue space was an issue, but they still would waste space on shit merch.
Gamestation would keep the retro games, but what happened? Game took over them and shut it down.
Then, the prices went up - £10 more than supermarkets or online. "Well they're a smaller chain, they can't take that much off the RRP", maybe so, but £10? Nah, greed. Next, sometimes they wouldn't stock a game which should've been popular enough to be in a game store, but not a supermarket - Out of touch.
Game should've died a long time ago.

moriarty18891581d ago

Is Frys still around or did they close down? I remember hearing of them alot at one time for games.
