Yoshio Sakamoto still interested in working on traditional games, wants to challenge himself

Yoshio Sakamoto is most well-known for playing a prominent role in three Nintendo series: Metroid, WarioWare, and Rhythm Heaven. But Sakamoto has mainly acted as a producer in recent years, and hasn’t done too much with Metroid as of late aside from Other M.

That being said, Sakamoto is still interested in working on the franchises he is most famous for. He told CVG the following when asked if he will continue to contribute to some of his more traditional game series:

I think he should try again making a 3D Metroid, With Other M, the heart was there, but unfortunately the result wasn't satisfactory for everyone.

randomass1713811d ago

He turned Samus into an angsty crybaby with daddy issues. Sakamoto is also the one who decided to make a 3D game play with a d-pad instead of the nunchuk's analogue stick. Sakamoto is a bad director with archaic ideas. He should only be relegated to simple 2D games. Let the real talent at Retro (who actually respect the Metroid franchise) make the next Metroid game.

BlackWolf3810d ago (Edited 3810d ago )

As much as I'm fond of Retro's work on Metroid, Sakamoto is partially responsible of the original Metroid formula. Super Metroid is the proof.

Metroid Other M was not what was expected, but that was mainly in the story department (basically, that was the greatest downgrade). The gameplay wasn't that bad (the analog stick was a more logical step, tough) and can be reworked to be better.

As Metallox said, the heart was there. It just needs some fixing, and honestly, someone who can help write a better story. So I would not say no if Sakamoto is up to make a new entry. That is, if he ever returns to the series.

randomass1713810d ago

@BlackWolf

Sakamoto helped with the old formula. Metroid was co-created by the man who created the Gameboy. Other M had some cool ideas, but the execution was awful. I really hope Sakamoto never touches the story or basic design of a 3D Metroid ever again. He is not talented, clever or very intelligent and he is the reason that so many people hated Other M.

lilbroRx3810d ago (Edited 3810d ago )

Your ignorance is astounding.

Without him, there would be no Metroid. He made it. Gunpei Youkoi headed the team for making the game but Sakamoto was the one who created Samus. Note that is not co-created. He is the reason Samus exists in the first place.

He was both director and designer of the original Metroid, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Retro was just continuing what he had already established in 3D.

Fusion was his first time writing a story for the game as opposed to having Samus simply fighting voiceless to the end of the game with no personality like normal.

Other M was an attempt to follow on that story and add more back history and personality to Samus, but of course it didn't go over well. He didn't have a lot of experience with writing nor was his idea for Samus what other people have come to expect. He said clearly in an interview that he had never actually given thought to what Samus' personality was before. That is why in Metroid 1 through Prime 3 she didn't have one.

randomass1713810d ago

And then Sakamoto destroyed any semblance of a strong female lead in Samus. That's not ignorance at all. Also Samus may not have shown much personality but we knew that she was strong willed and very intelligent. so the fact that Sakamoto wrote her to be such a stupid kid in Other M is very telling of his writing ability. he has no place near any Metroid storyline. Retro wrote a much better story in Prime 1 - 3 and Samus didn't speak in any of those. It doesn't matter if he helped create Samus, he obviously has little understanding of how a practical female heroin should be written without making her a whiny, needy child.

Metallox3810d ago

You don't like Other M's story, so what? Just beacuse of that Sakamoto can't work anymore with Metroid? That doesn't seem fair for me...

Now, that complain about the D-Pad... I actually liked that, controls were perfect for my fingers, and I'm not alone, many reviewers actually liked that control scheme, so Sakamoto didn't do a bad job at all in this aspect.

Do you have more complains about the game? Because for me, the story it's the only bad thing for me as well, but this can be solved in future entries. So again, I don't have problem with Sakamoto working with Metroid.

still with flaws, but I've really enjoyed Other M, plus I still wish a Metroid CG movie with quality of Other M cutscenes

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3810d ago

Everyone?
Don't include me then because I enjoyed the game. It was a very good game. Samus is a female not male. Female has emotions so it didn't bother me.

Metallox3810d ago (Edited 3810d ago )

You didn't understand my comment. I actually love Other M (yes love), it's in fact my favorite Metroid game.

Now, did everyone like Other M? No. You just can't deny that. We can't say that everyone liked Prime either, because someone definitely should have not liked the exploration scheme, but at least the praise for this game was overwhelming, and Other M got mixed impressions.

randomass1713809d ago

Lots of people HATED Other M's storyline and a lot of fans want it to be retconned because of how poorly it treated Samus. The d-pad is a fair criticism because 3D controls with a d-pad are finnicky. Also turning the wii remote to shoot missiles was a dumb choice too. It didn't work right and it almost always made you take damage because of how wonky it was. Other M just wasn't that good a game, and I think people like me who didn't enjoy it are justified in saying Sakamoto doesn't deserve another shot. He blew it with this one big time.

Ye, Custom Robo Arena was a lot better than Pokemon anyways, now that's a game.

Eonjay1d 3h ago

Interestingly this comes like a day after they announced they would be at the Tokyo Games Show.

Vits1d 2h ago

We should all really hope so. Otherwise, this could lead to many issues, as they hold patents on numerous game mechanics. And when I say numerous, I truly mean it. Take this one, for example:

"Abstract: In an example of a game program, a ground boarding target object or an air boarding target object is selected by a selection operation, and a player character is caused to board the selected boarding target object. If the player character aboard the air boarding target object moves toward the ground, the player character is automatically changed to the state where the player character is aboard the ground boarding target object, and brought into the state where the player character can move on the ground."

In plain English, do you guys remember that super amazing mechanic where you surf on the water with a Pokémon, and then when you hit land, it changes to you walking? Yeah, they patented that.

Watchwatusay9h ago

I’ve lost A LOT of respect for Nintendo over the last year.

And patenting game mechanics? To me, that’s scum. No one should be able to patent a mechanic in a game. Imagine if Naughty Dog patented the grapple hook from Uncharted 4 for example. It’s dumb

porkChop1d 13h ago

A patent lawsuit? What Pokémon-related patent could Palworld even be infringing that other similar games haven't? This makes no sense. Feels like Nintendo just trying to throw its weight around to bully competitors, just like they do with emulators even though they're legal.

Kaii1d 13h ago

They can't Innovate their own IP, but when others are breaking the ceiling, they run to the courts, gtfo Nintendo/Gamefreak.

Companies' gatekeeping mechanics behind the patent system to stifle innovation, consumers will always pick the better product, it's not the consumer's fault that Gamefreak has sat on their lazy assess for years.

Kornholic1d 5h ago

"Consumers will always pick the better product"

Since when?

swedishMeatwad17h ago

You can't argue with _subjective_ taste. Some people are going to like games you find crappy. I'm happy not everyone has the same taste.

Kornholic8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

@swedishMeatwad

PS5 Pro is obviously objectively the better product when compared to the base PS5, but the majority of consumers interested in a PS5 will not be picking Pro over base PS5.

There are countless examples like this out there.

The_Blue1d ago

Rather you like it or not COD has many accessible options and customization that allows for better experience than most other FPS.

Knightofelemia1d 13h ago

The Palworld has been out since January of 2024 and now Nintendo finally decides to do something. I fail to see how Palworld is like Pokemon besides evolving monsters. There are other games out there as well where you can capture and level up monsters. Tales of Symphonia 2 does that capture monsters and have them fight with you and they evolve when levelling up. The two games might share some similarities but what game doesn't borrow from another game. I could understand if Palworld was just a straight on copy clone of Pokemon but it's not. Nintendo is starting to become a pain in the ass. Going full gung ho with rom sites that I can see, purposely taking down pictures from a strategy guide for Mario 64 the strategy guide never came to North America and Nintendo had the pictures taken down. Where does it every stop with Nintendo?

babadivad1d 3h ago

Monsters don't evolve in Palworld

Software_Lover23h ago

It's because Palworld became a worldwide viral success. Nintendo can't fathom someone else being that popular when it comes to a small monster catching game.

VersusDMC23h ago

Nintendo is only acting now because they just finished a lawsuit which they won.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Atlus should get on this and sue Nintendo as SMT came out before Pokemon. If Nintendo is going to play this game.

isarai1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

This feels like a scare tactic more than anything else. There's nothing here dozens of other games haven't already done, they're just mad this game showed people how much the pokemon series has been slackin and are desperately trying to make an example out of them.

How's about instead of spending all that money on court fees and lawyers you invest it into making pokémon better?

Profchaos1d 4h ago

I think if it was a scare tactic it would have happened when the game came out I have a feeling they've been building a case for a while

isarai1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

It did happen even before the game came out, they tried several tomes before and nothing came of it

Profchaos1d 3h ago

I was pretty sure the only statement they made was they would investigate

The red light district, where games go to w**** themselves for Gamepass cash.

Asterphoenix12d ago

Well Nintendo and Squaresoft is where he started. I totally understand why he doesn't want to do FF now. If so I'm happy for either a remaster of Last Story or a new entry/spiritual successor. Loved the battle system of Last Story.

porkChop12d ago

I just really want a new Lost Odyssey, or even a proper remaster with some QoL updates. Though I'd also love to see him work with Square on a new IP.

Profchaos12d ago

That's about as good as a confirmation that we will see ports to the switch2

Knightofelemia12d ago

Wish my parents bought me a NES as a kid I would have played the first FF game. But I was lucky to have a SNES I played a bit of FF6 and just went to Chrono Trigger. When the FF collection releases I-VI Collection Anniversary drops I will take my time to play each Final Fantasy.

Deathdeliverer12d ago

I mean… this is kinda obvious. The original final fantasy and its early sequels were on…

Imagine the irony if he had the only known copy of mother 3 on the n64 dd

TheNamelessOne12d ago

Mine will be worth a small fortune in the future.

Knightofelemia12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Why should he sell his collection? It's his collection if he wants to sell then that is his decision maybe he wants to save it as a nest egg or pass it down to his kids. That's like asking the AVGN to sell his giant collection plus the Nintoaster. Or like asking Jay Leno to sell his car collection. Collectors like to brag, show off, and explain the history or the rarity. Be lucky Mr. Ex Predisent even gave you a glimpse of his collection.

Profchaos12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I think it great he shows off his collection it shows that despite the criticisms he got he really wasn't just a suit and truely loved the games and that really shows in the fact that he still talks about Nintendo years after departing the company we need more Reggie and less matrck in gaming
