Mario Kart 8's Use of the GamePad Is Disappointing

Maybe it's not quite as sad as the blank screen in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but it isn't much better.

I'm disappointed about mk8 not being 5 player but what can a racing game truly offer on the second screen. Other than the current map being offered, this isn't that big a deal I'm sure its gonna be a great game....

chasegarcia4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

how about innovative weapons use? 2-player with TV/GamePad?

pootymcpoockle4097d ago

What? Like a big red button that just says "FIRE!"?

chasegarcia4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

@PeteyMcPickle
one free idea from me, bomb throw meter. Let me know if you want another one.

maniacmayhem4097d ago

Exactly Chasegarcia!!

This is what I thought too. How about some unique weapons that would utilize the second screen. Like the Boomerang, how about actually tracing it's course of trajectory. this would be cool but would also be hazardous as you would have take your eyes off the road.

How about bringing the Ghost back and when activated you actually can pick a racer the Ghost attacks from the second screen.

Anything could have been done to use the second screen in a more creative way.

But I am sure the reason they didn't do this is because Nintendo thought about split screen and not every player would have a gamepad to take advantage of the weapons.

It would have still been cool to have these types of features though.

Raf1k14097d ago

It's a racing game. People don't really want to be looking away from the TV for even a second while playing.

UnceasingElias4097d ago

Nintendo aren't idiots. I am sure they know what they are doing or maybe they haven't revealed all the gamepad features jet. Ether way I trust nintendos decistion.

Deadpoolio4097d ago

@UnceasingElias Really? Your that delusional...How did that work out for Tropical Freeze? They aren't just keeping gamepad features secret...

iplay1up24096d ago

Need For Speed makes great use of the gamepad, and it does not distract. I am just saying.

3-4-54097d ago

HOW do you want it to be used ?

Everybody complains but offers really no suggestions themselves.

* Does it NEED to do anything special ? NO, then why complain about it ?

* The PS4's controller the DS4 doesn't do anything special with itself for any game, does that make it a bad controller ? No.

Qrphe4097d ago

Why did Nintendo go for a gamepad if its two latest games don't make fair use of it? How many games more to come will use it satisfactorily? 4 or 5?

It does not seem to warrant the manufacturing/development/mark eting costs that it inflicted on the console from the beginning.

Benjaminkno4097d ago

@Qrphe, @Knushwood Butt

I'm not sure you would say that if you've used it.

W101, ZombiU, BO2, Pikmin3, MonsterHunter3, Rayman Legends. And that was just off the top of my head. Typing this comment...
It's quite clear why it's necessary.

I can play ANY Wii game off of it too.

There's nothing new with next-gen controllers. There's no reason why Ps3 controllers shouldn't be compatible with Ps4. It's been the same design for almost 2 decades.

Knushwood Butt4097d ago

Nintendo themselves haven't got a clue how to use the gamepad.

Oooooh, a map.

iplay1up24096d ago

Nintendoland says HI. The gamepad is a great addition to the Console. Look I have PS3/4 and I really like the gamepad as a controller. Have you even spent any real one on one time with Wii U, at home and online???

Too many people judge something they have not even really experienced. It took me a couple of weeks to even find out what the Wii U could really do. Nintendo has not really done a great job of showing us.

bobacdigital4097d ago

We don't even know what the game offers in battle mode ??? Maybe there will be a Mario chase feature like in Nintendo land.

Nintentional24096d ago

it's so funny how hard it is for you trolls to post these flamebait articles about Mario Kart 8, because all I see in the thumbnail is a fan-FREAKIN'-tastic looking game. The game will score super high in reviews and we all know it. It's gonna be phenomenal despite a few flaws.

lefty4096d ago

Wouldn't that put the other players at a dis-advantage? (local multiplayer)

We might get a video editor, for mk tv. Thatd be a nice use of the gamepad.

What they have already, is fine. Luckly the game looks amazing to the point where it overshadows and short comings.

Spikeantestor4097d ago

I've been quick to speak against the idea that Nintendo should get rid of the gamepad, but if things like this keep happening I'm not going to have a leg to stand on.

higgins784097d ago

It focuses its attention on the best input method for said game i.e Wii Motion (with wheel) and 'traditional' control, now what is wrong with that? Sure, the inclusion of something innovative on the Gamepad would have been great, but rather focus on something positive than shoehorn in something pointless.

Besides, can we focus on the real issue in hand, the game look - and from all accounts - plays like a dream, isnt that what matters come the crunch...

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

gold_drake438d ago

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot736d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr736d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt736d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky735d ago (Edited 735d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long735d ago (Edited 735d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
