Morpheus Targeting $249-299 Price; Sony's Studios Working on "Absolutely Fantastic" Things - Insider

Industry insider Ahsan Rasheed has been talking about Project Morpheus for a while, and since the new VR headset has finally been announced and the gag has been removed, today he’s been sharing a lot of the information he’s been given by his usually reliable sources.

Considering that it requires the camera, it had better be cheaper than that. For me to pay $250+, all of the components would have to be handled by the Morpheus.

And when it comes down to it, Morpheus (like Oculus) is NOT a peripheral, it's a display.

Disagree all you want, but the fact is that $250-300 IS NOT a mass market price, when you will also have to buy a PS4 on top of that. $199 possible, but any more is WAY too much.

I think it is achievable, as reported by kotaku, OC is $350 but that is with a camera to track movement.

So yeah all in all I think it should be cheaper and so the VR + PS4 camera together should come into the OC price range

Considering the size of the VR it would never do well if sony price their VR too high.

In the Japanese market it probably would do well, size/cost does matter to them when it comes to electronics.

Sonys efforts in this new generation alone is close to being worthy enough to be bestowed the title but I don't want to give Sony that title yet. If everything goes as planned for Sony and they pull of the Playstation eco system I think they are trying to pull off they will leave little to no room for competitors on the hardware side.

$249.99 is a great price for Sony's VR.

Thanks to the oculus there will be more VR content for PS4's VR. also, Sony could price their VR more reasonably too.

For the PS2 and original Xbox comparison, if you are going to release a console a year or so later, I certainly hope it would have better specs compared to a console that was release a year prior.

As for what Utalkin2me would say, if I was him, I'd say Sony had the better technical-know-how to create their own emotion engine and graphics synthesizer and not use off the shelf parts from PC.

If the design trends of microsoft follow what we've seen so far their VR headset will be the equivalent of putting something the size of a cardboard box over your head, if not i'm sure it would need a power brick hanging from it to prevent overheating.

No doubt if there is money to be made then microsoft will dabble in VR headsets but i would feel safer using a sony headset as opposed to a microsoft headset.

If you think that's way too expensive, then you have no clue or price concept of how much VR or hmd(head mounted display)once cost only a few yrs ago. $300 for 1080p w/full positional tracking and a slick design is a very good price point. Hmd on average can cost $800-1200 without full hd or head tracking.

Don't know how to react... Sure, it's great for average consumer that the price point is low... But for people like me who can dish out a bit of extra money it's bad as trying to keep the price low will most likely result in cutting corners with quality.

It would be very easy for a company like sony to put out their headset at 249 or possibly even 199 and still maintain the same level of quality. its hard to believe, but manufacturing is CHEAP now days.

Since this is probably going to be expensive. They should treat it like a new platform, unlike move or kinect. This way, they make games ONLY for it, to take advantage and avoid making games that are more suited for traditional gameplay and forcing the VR on them.

Sony should focus on making great experiences for VR, and separate the PS4 games. Otherwise we could see the mistake Sony and MS made with Move and Kinect respectively, again.

VR has potential, but they need to treat it as something completely new and independent.

It might be compatible, but might no be suitable. You might be able to play mario with a guitar from guitar hero, but that doesn't mean it's the right way.

I would like them to do games for VR that can only experience and enjoy with VR. That would be nice.
