A Candid Talk With Mark Cerny, Who Designed The PS4, Among Other Things

In the 80s, he made arcade games for Atari. In the 10s, he led the team that made the PlayStation 4. Mark Cerny is old enough to have seen it all in the young medium of video games. For half an hour last month, we talked about a lot of it in a conversation that was as illuminating as it was, at times, surprisingly personal.

The story is too old to be commented.

This guy is a true pioneer of the industry, knows his stuff inside out. Glad the PS4 was engineered by him.

All the brilliant ones are......

DeathOfTheFanBoy2656d ago

He's weird....

There, I said it.

DeadRabbits2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

He had a Mission Impossible to stop console gaming heading into Oblivion but he had All The Right Stuff in a Risky Business and has left the Xbone Far and Away and as Collateral damage........LEGEND!

I did not even relize ;)

SniperControl2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

haha, is this how many Tom Cruise films can you get into a comment section??

Bubble up you funny faker

You are the Last Samurai my friend, Days of Thunder are definitely here to keep the PS4 Top Gun. Knight & Day i play on my PS4, makes me want to shout like a Valkyrie, we are in a War of the Worlds with the X1 and i go into this Eyes Wide Shut.

I miss N4G early last year when nearly every story seemed to be about Mark Cerny. Somebody even made a brilliant spoof front page where every story was about Cerny!

WeAreLegion2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

I've only personally met a handful of geniuses in my life, but they all articulate like Mark Cerny. It's strange. Gotta love him.

Here's a video interview where he says pretty much the same stuff he says in the Kotaku interview.

kewlkat0072656d ago

This guy maybe a genius but can somebody ask the tough questions.

When can Ps4 gamers expect the same graphics as what Pc gamers can get now? When can the games look like the Tech demos? we tend to see at reveals.

This guy knows the hardware and what is possible. so why are devs downgrading stuff?

SaffronCurse2656d ago

Through optimization, devs will be able to harness the power of the hardware in due time. It took them several years for the Ps3 and even games coming out today are still pushing the hardware to it's limits.

SniperControl2656d ago

Once the updated ASM gets among the devs, we are truly gonna see some astonishing graphics from the PS4 in the coming years.

kewlkat0072656d ago

I understand that part. Recently, here have been many disappointment with the before and after of games coming looking at the articles. I wonder if Mark would say the same as you did.

Destrania2656d ago

The only 'downgraded' game we've seen for PS4 so far is Watch Dogs, and that's only because it's cross-gen. It's on Ubisoft if it doesn't hold up to previous footage by release. It also isn't even out for two more months, with lots of optimization time. The Order looks even better than it's reveal trailer. Same with Infamous and even Killzone. So, what the heck are you talking about?...

Melankolis2656d ago

Compared to US$400 PC, maybe PS4 have already surpassed it...
There i answer you...

Volkama2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

Just please can we get through this comment section without anybody using the word "gravy"?

Majin-vegeta2656d ago

But you just used it?:O

OT: Cerny should create the next PS consoles until his retirement.

Volkama2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

I did, but I don't think it sounds so seedy when I use it :)

As for the PS4 architecture, he's undeniably done a great job of eeking out performance while keeping cost down. I'll hesitate to heap praise on him though, until I have seen how GPU compute pans out. I think the emphasis on GPU compute units is the most bold/eccentric element of the design, and I'm interested in the results.

Unfortunately his own showcase (knack) didn't ignite that spark, but I anticipate good things from it. Particularly in terms of physics but hopefully more besides.

SniperControl2656d ago (Edited 2656d ago )

I think Knack was a subsidy over style, Knack was all about showing off the level of physics and calculations.(damn, lol, you edited your comment to reflect that)

Anyway, i really enjoyed Knack, thought it was a fun game to play, not bad for a launch title, i just think it got caught up in the politics.

I like how he says he's just Cerny Games. Crazy, you'd think he'd definitely be completely legally tied to Sony forever, being the PS4 designer 'n all. Dude did a Hitman contract kill for Sony, by creating the Microsoft console destroyer. Then he's back to his base.
