Why Mac OS isn't the best OS around

Computer World reports:

''When I recently explained one of the many reasons why I prefer desktop Linux to Windows, even over my favorite desktop Windows, XP SP3, I got a lot of people telling me I was full of hooey because I barely even mentioned Mac OS X.

Good enough, here's my take on Apple's Mac OS X.

First, I really like Mac OS X. I've liked it, in fact, since before there was a Mac OS X. I loved it since its first incarnation, as NeXTStep back in 1993. One of my computing regrets is that in 1995 I swapped my Color Turbo NeXTStation (Sob!) for an Adtran T1 Network Facility Interface. What can I say? I really needed a 1.544Mbps Internet connection when that kind of speed was almost unheard of for a home office.''

Was an interesting article to read. Nice to see one that isn't entirely biased to a certain OS.

But his only argument against it is that it isn't open source. If he loves Linux so much why doesn't he install it on the 2 Macs he has running OS X? He just doesn't make a very good argument if you ask me - the vast vast majority of computer users could give a crap about open source; they probably don't even know what it means. The whole point is that Apple hardware and software are made specifically to work together, to provide a complete solution - given that I think one shouldn't be surprised or bothered that it's a closed platform.

ever tried working with osx?

lotsa my friends have made the switch to mac, because of the OSX... (and ofcourse the sexy designs)...

also, as a musician, you know you wont get any better platform for music.

My gaming set up now is a little more advanced but the monitor they have in the link I have. Mine is just a little smaller but it does the trick non the less. I highly recommend it to people who want to play in HD (High Definition) without expensive TVs.

I think Vista deserves much more credit than it has recieved, but everyone's entitled to their views and opinions. Mac is cool too, so I only look at articles with headings like "Mac Sux" or "Vista Sux" as nothing more than another inch in the divide that doesn't need to exist in the first place. You know what I like? I like any OS that can "WOW" me. Vista can wow...so can a MacOS!

And people need to lighten up about their views of inferiority in another OS. There's a few major ones out there, and we'd be HEAVILY burdened if there were any more. So let's be thankful that we're not stuck in the "proprietary" systems of old. When every company had its own dedicated staff just to turn ON the damn computer!

As far as I know, it's only the creators that should find fault with their product, since they would then fix it BEFORE we find the faults ourselves.

I could go to lengths in install Mac OSX on my PC as I could also go with Linux, but I aim for ultimate compatibility. OSX has some software that it supports and that's great. Linux is also great for it's reasons, but it's a DIY OS. Meaning you have to get all the drivers and work out compatibility problems on your own. Windows XP doesn't have those problems, and for that reason alone it's my OS of choice. And will be for the forseeable future. Sure Windows XP has it's problems but most can be solved with simple software solutions.

Recently upgraded from the curse known as Vista to the trusty ol XP.
If MS screws up windows 7, I'm movin to a Mac.

Linux? nah, no programs I use are written for it, so it's pretty much useless to me. Don't even see anything special bout that OS anyway.
