Why Sega handed Sonic over to Western studios and gave him a scarf

Polygon :

"Veteran Sonic game designer Takashi Iizuka is overseeing the production of Sonic Boom, but main development is entirely in Western hands due to Sega's desire for Sonic to be more appealing to Western audiences.

Speaking with Polygon, Iizuka said the decision to give developer Big Red Button creative control over Sonic Boom and have Sanzaru Games work on the 3DS title was part of Sega's overarching plan to make a completely Westernized branch of the Sonic franchise."

I don't like the art direction of the new Sonic. The scarf looks a bit silly.

As for knuckles...

XD lol that was funny, bubble up !!

SegaGamer3730d ago

It's ok because i think this is just a one off. This isn't how Sonic games will look from now on.

miyamoto3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

Sonic Doom is guaranteed!
Sega has gone nutz!
Nintendo is the best franchise keeper Sega is the worst!

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3731d ago

Sega wants to appeal to the Western audience? Here's an idea. Release good games. Then localize them, like quickly, not 1-2 years after. I've been waiting on pso2 far too long now.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3731d ago

No it really is that simple. PSO2 was originally slated for March 2013 in NA and EU, never happened, no reason given.

DanielGearSolid3731d ago

You can pretend its that simple, because you wanna play the game so badly (so do I)

But Sega has a business to run, and when it comes to finances its never simple

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3731d ago

I'm sure they are a business. But think about it logically. Have any of the last 5 Sonic games done well in retail, or in reviews. No.
Then why keep making them when they have potentially better IPs that could do better?

DanielGearSolid3730d ago

Sega doesn't only make sonic games...

Besides localizing games doesnt mean automatic success, fact is eastern games don't generally sell like hotcakes in the west

DarkZane3731d ago

At least PS4 and XB1 will have a proper Sonic game (because let's face it, we all know it's happening, even if SEGA tries to deny it).

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

nope it will be another 06 situation
then Sega shifted resources to Wii and DS.

Summons753731d ago

I don't like Knuckles (never have) but the new art design isn't as horrible as people are making it out to be. As for the studio, sure they may be unknown but do some research people, the co-founder and CEO Bob Rafei has a really good resume having been employed with Naughty Dog

http://brbent.com/team/bob-...

So don't be so quick to judge, this could be pretty good. Look what Retro did with Metroid and Donkey Kong country when they were relatively unknown and I remember everyone doubting Rocksteady with a Batman game and look at that.

I feel like gamers want Sonic dead because every new game they always find something to cry and complain about. So instead of b****ing over a minute of footage try actually doing research and take off the nostalgia goggles.

I'll give this a chance but I won't be expecting it to blow my mind. Did that with Lost Worlds and I've been having tons of fun with the game.

Fixay3731d ago

he actually led the jak and darter games

JackieCruise693731d ago

Totally agree. At first I thought things were going horrible with the new designs - mostly Knuckles- but they grew on me after seeing the game trailer. I'm still not really liking Knuckles but the other three aren't that horrible.
As for the game itself, I wasn't sure of how to feel about it until I read up on how it's going to be more adventure styled with Melee combat, co-op, and four player. After finding out that little bit the game doesn't seem all that bad. It even looks almost Jak and Daxter-like from the trailer. I wouldn't just automatically count this game out just because of some silly designs, it could turn out great if it's done right. I think people should at least give it a chance before brushing the game off as a bad idea.

Shadonic3731d ago

the arm color should change back and for certain scenes they need to find better stances for sonic and amy that work with there even more lengthened legs which quite honestly are too long.

Sonic Superstars Team Doesn't Think Pixel Art Will Be a "Viable" Art Style in 10 Years

Sonic Superstars is an exciting return to the Blue Blur's 2D origins, but its new art style exists because its developers don't think the classic pixel art approach will be "viable" in future.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ at Gamescom 2023, Sonic Team head and Sonic Superstars producer Takashi Iizuka discussed (via a translator) the importance of having both 2D Sonic games, like Superstars, and 3D titles like last year's Sonic Frontiers.

This might be a good game but I certainly like the pixel style Shantae games, like the newest one that's being worked on again. I don't agree that it won't be viable in future. There are also AI pixel art generators to convert your images to pixel art style which I'm guessing will get even better soon.

-Foxtrot239d ago

These kind of comments and not doing Mania 2...it just feels like they are kind of hurt a team who did fan made games managed to make a better Sonic game than them.

maniacmayhem239d ago

Well yeah , pixel art/games is already an artistic choice and not the norm. I'm sure in 10 more years it will be considered a gimmick or some nostalgic throwback which it usually always is

gold_drake239d ago

if team sonic would get their Sonic 3D games right for a change, we wouldnt be asking for the 2D styled games.

NotoriousWhiz238d ago

They need to get their 3d Sonic games right. And Sonic Frontiers was an excellent step in that direction. However, they shouldn't abandon 2d games either. We can have both. Same as Mario.

Chocoburger238d ago

Takashi Iizuka being wrong about something? Surprise, surprise.

Whether its the classic Sonic pentalogy of games on the Genesis / MegaDrive.
Retro-modern like Sonic Mania, fan games, or future official 2D Sonic games, there will always be a place in this industry for 2D pixel art (or HD sprite art) gaming.

Sonic Superstars Has Big Limitation

This is the first time the series has tackled fully functional four player co-op, with previous games having incorporated multiplayer co-op play with limited functions. With the four-player co-op some fans have compared Sonic Superstars to the New Super Mario Bros. games. Much like Nintendo’s platformers, Sonic Superstars has four different playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. However, this is limited to drop-in local couch co-op, with Takashi Iizuka, the creative officer at Sonic Team, explaining why.
