Carl Ledbetter:
It’s 11:47 p.m. on a Thursday, and Carl Ledbetter is 29th in line to buy a new Xbox One.
Which is kind of funny, considering he designed it.
“How could I resist? You spend years working on something, so it’s pretty special to be there at the moment it’s launched into the world,” Ledbetter said. “It’s cool to be around other people who are as excited as I am.”
The Nov. 22 waiting-for-midnight launch line goes out the door and around the corner of Seattle’s University Village Microsoft Store. It’s freezing – verifiably so – and the crowd’s collective puffs of breath hang in the air like a foggy force field. A force field that smells vaguely of … Cool Ranch Doritos?
Christopher Dring of MCV questions Carl Ledbetter on the design of the Xbox One.
Not really, but it feels kind of chunky in comparison to the PS4. I was at a friends dorm, and the Xbox One took up a sizable portion of his desk.
It doesn't matter how they look. MS and Sony make their consoles look beast!
Non of them are beasts though.
I don't mind a big console.
I don't mind a small console.
I just hate bad games.
Ps5 will look like wireless router and people will say its to small an not bad ass looking..
Gonna trade them both in at the end of the 6 year generation anyway so meh.
No way am I buying a new xbox just because its slim...
Add more power then sure.
A new case for $400? Lol
Well, it just looks clumsy it's so big. Can't stand on end either, which would have negated some of that size. And it's fragile. I heard my disc beating against something while spinning the other day, only to find out it was because I had my spare controller sitting on the console, which must have been just enough for gravity to push in on the top of the box and cause the disc to sputter while spinning.
A smaller, more compact, sturdier and less static design would be appreciated... Compared to my PS4 standing next to it, it looks bulky. Sitting next to my petite little Wii U makes it look unnaturally gargantuan.
^You cant stand it vertical??? Did not know that. Then again, not sure if i tried to make my PS4 stand up vertical either. I'll try it after work.
I hate how bulky the Xbox one is. Nothing is subtle about it.
Thanatos - sure you can. If you're like me and only buy digital, anyway. I wouldn't recommend putting discs in like that, though.
All the more reason to believe in there being a slim version that is 2/3 the size.
size is another thing but what is with people in this thread spreading "quieter than the PS4" thing? the PS4 is quiet like a mouse and the sound you make pressing the triggers are way louder that the PS4 itself.
sure, the Xbone might be super quiet or whatever, I don't know because I don't have one but the PS4 is quiet too. the Xbox only gamers might find it amazing that the Xbone is quiet relatively in comparison to the loud 360 but the PS4 being quiet is something that people take for granted because last gen the PS3 is quiet too I guess.
It is big and bulky because of a 1 billion $$$ mistake they made last gen...
it's as simple as that.
I use to hate it but it's grown on me. in honesty it's not that much bigger then the original 360, it just looks a lot bulkier because of it's straight edges.
I have my xb1, ps4 and old 360 right next to each other so it's easy to compare.
it really does remind me of an old vcr though, lol.
the funny thing is when I do pick them up for whatever reason it's the ps4 that feels a bit strange in my hands mostly because it's more square then rectangle and because of the sloping edges.
it is nothing short of amazing that sony managed to put all that power into such a confined space.... with NO power brick.
I just don't understand why MS don't have some Japanese guys design their xbox... unless it's because they already all work for sony lol
When I first saw the console, I thought the design looked kind of odd based on the fact the 360 wasn't bulky at all, and it looks to be that Microsoft isn't good when it comes to good looking hardware with less failure rate, so probably they went back to the way of the original XBox, because it was very reliable despte it's size and desig but I must saw the XBox One when you look at it in person, it's a heck of a good looking console, maybe not having a striking design like the PS4, but for a square-based console design, it looks very good, if their intention might have being for reliability reasons, I can't blame them, so, bulky or not, still one good looking machine.
To me the Xbox One has a finish that make it look rather costly compared to the Xbox 360 and PS4 cheap plastic look. It is similar to the PS3 in that respect.
It is slightly bulky, and the power supply adds to the bulk. However, other than the first time setup, and the benefit of swapping out the power supply from 110V to 220V (something I cannot do with my PS4, but was included in the PS3), I never really think about it.
It sits on my shelf, sticks out a little at an angle and works like a wonder. The big bulk just makes the Xbox One super silent and I expect it to last 10-years of daily use due to being so well cooled.
With X1 they were going for an aesthetic that fits in with your media setup, so it's dimensions match up with that of an amp or blu-ray player.
Personally, I like that it fits in with all of my equipment but I like the PS4 just as much for how nice it is as an object.
I have both and the X1 is considerably quieter than the PS4. That's an advantage of the size. I do think that Sony could have got away with making the PS4 a tiny bit bigger to make it run a little cooler and quieter.
We Americans love our things to be big...suv, houses, food portion, and yes..videogame consoles. Sony, a Japanese company, like it small and compact like their cars, houses, food portion, and yes..videogame consoles. The exception being the phat PS3..it literally looks like a George Foreman lean mean grilling machine at times. LOL
What, are you carrying it around? It sits on a shelf... "it feels clunky" Smh. Yeah, I'm so frustrated with the design, it keeps me up at night. My gaming experience is ruined.
I have a black glass entertainment center, the size and design may bother some, but it looks fantastic in my living room.
Well I set my gaming console on my lap while I play. It a gets kinda annoying when you try and juggle it like a clown way to bulky!
Excuse for Microsoft to Milk Multiple SKU slim Models. With the Kinect Built-in etc...
AMD is known to be shrinking the die for both consoles. I wouldn't expect slims for at least a year. Smaller die means less heat (fan, etc.) which means smaller console.
No, it's big because the Xbox brand couldn't survive another RROD fiasco, so cooling was a prime concern.
Last gen it cost them billions, if there was a repeat not only would it cost them billions again, it would likely put them out of the console business as they would have lost so much consumer confidence.
PS3,slim,super slim.
360,slim.
Wii.
We all know who the milking machine is.Also Look how many models of the PSP Sony have milked.
The joystick matters, not the box.
It's big but it's only a problem if you have little shelf room and/ or a habbit of picking it up and swinging it around/taking it to a friend's house.
Ps4 wannabe's b#tch away,,............., BC yea 2" is so much bulkier, right ladies?.
Its why the Xbox One Never overheats.
it's bulk is a direct response to RROD fiasco of last gen. now there is an ample amount of room for heat dissipation. comparing its size to the ps4, it seems they may have overcompensated, but i guess they'd rather be safe than sorry.
"they spent three years building the Xbox One into a machine that blends into the background and gets forgotten." This seriously must be a joke! I read this and laughed my Ace off. Oh you mean that giant black behemoth under my television? No that's not a VCR grandma, that's my Video game machine, I'm surprised you even noticed it sitting there.
"...blends into the background and gets forgotten"
The first part is true - if you live in a retro electronics museum. They might have got the second part right though, we'll have to wait and see...
@G20WLY
Well, it goes perfectly with my Onkyo AV Receiver and region-free Blu-Ray player. My PS4 doesn't blend at all and so it's kept on the opposite side of my media cabinet with my Wii U. So, on that basis, it blends in perfectly with home cinema equipment.
If you have a proper media setup then the dimensions of the X1 fit into that. A bit like the PSX did a few years back. The design of the PS4 and Wii U comes from the traditional console angle and are meant to stand out in your setup as interesting objects, they do that rather well.
Like I said before it even came out, it looks like a big old VHS player! Or an old PC tower laying down. Very uncool looking compared to, PS4, Wii U, PS3, 360 or Wii.
Kind of like the original Xbox controller. Lol.
It is a bit like a VHS player, back before it's release, I saw some Photoshopped images of an Xbox One as a microwave. Or something like that. Made me chuckle a bit. But hey, there are some great games out for it.
I remember a photoshopped original PS3 making it look like a George Forman grill :)
PS4 is right behind the XOne for fugliest console.
That razor blade design is completely wack.
Nah, it looks like an eraser..... That erases it's competition.....jk all gaming stuff is cool
I disagree with LaChance but completely agree with sckipt that i looks like an eraser.
it's called Ergonomic.
for disk's SAKE.. cause.. -We Saved Them-
#NoDRM.
your welcome.
well that's like your opinion dude.
It's between the slim razor sleek vs the retro VCR box.
Yeah one of the newer VCRs. PS4 looks really awesome in person, just wish I could change the led color instead of it being white while it is on.
i actually like the look of it, it sits under my tv and blends right in to my entertainment setup.
and its whisper quiet all the time and never gets hot, which to me is the most important thing
Lol you got downvoted because you like how it does not over heat lmao these Sony children are hilarious. At least it doesn't Wobble or look like an eraser.
It is quieter than the PS4. I always thought the 4" Fan in the X1 could easily increase it's rpm's for a future CPU/GPU Overclocks and still be much quieter than the 360, especially considering the PS4 runs Hotter by a few degrees and consumes more electricity than the X1.
Ooops, I don't think that will be accepted on here ;/
I completely agree. Sometimes my PS4 sounds like a vacuum when i first run any games on it especially Dragon Age Inquisition. I dont know what triggers the fan to go on full blast and then slowly goes back down. It's weird since nothing has been loaded on the screen yet.
ps4 consumes more electricity than xbox 1 by a small margin.
A beautiful Big Black Bulky Box.
If the bulk meant having a whisper quiet console with a very low failure rate, then I'll take that over the original 360 which sounded like a Jet Engine.
you can't please everyone. I'm happy with everything about it.
Exactly, maybe i'm alone but usually my focus is on the TV than looking at the box under it anyway.
I agree that the Xbox One could have looked better like the concept design found on the late Xbox magazine.
http://www.youngmanblog.com...
But I placed it in my TV center, underneath my TV mounted on the wall and I haven't even noticed it after that.
Anyways, that's what slims are for.
Those rounded corners...better watch out for getting sued by apple.:)
Anyhow, anyone that wouldn't buy a console because of how it looks shouldn't be gaming anyways.
It's OK to absolutely hate the appearance of a console, but still enjoy playing games on it. I didn't like the X1 at first, but it's fine when I saw it in person. 360 didn't really do it for me, nor the slim PS3, or even the original PS2 for that matter.
Well they made it bulky for a reason, to make a slimmer one and sell more units later on!
Hahaha, you think? You never know with corporate America, but Microsoft's been trying to make right by its customers lately, so I dunno. Hope not.
Of course there is going to be a smaller version technology improves chips get smaller take less to cool. Would you rather have a pc that took an entire room or buy the new model that doesn't. ..
Everybody gets frustrated, because what we want is for everything to be wafer thin, not get hot and just be a snap to put together. But the reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you’re pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it. There’s always an interesting dynamic between engineering and design, and constraints around performance.”
Exactly and said this months ago. Cooling was important and that bigger fan meant they needed extra space. Its all going to be important once directx12 arrives. And the bigger fan meant the CPU could be upped to 1.75ghz with very little issues.
It's not Bulky I'm setting here looking at x1 n ps4 on my self n the X1 is a little higher but that's it, to cry over that is just to picky omg get over it, n play your dang games
Yeah, people just consider it bulky because it doesn't have a particular design. The PS3 is rounded, the PS4 is trapezoid-style, the 360 has the dip in the center. It just looks bulky because it doesn't have one of those types of designs really. In actuality it's not all that big.
No, the Xbox one is huge, theres no way around it lol. Its bigger than the fat PS3, and the Ps4 is as small as the superslim ps3.
Xbox One reminds me of Philips CD-i from the past.
CD-i
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
I still have one of them :0) First system to use a CD for games, no it wasn't the PS1 that didn't release until 1994 this was available in 1992
Well i have both the white xone and the white ps4
Yes, the xone is bigger but its a hell lot of quiter compared to my ps4.
I'm fine with it being a little bulky, but it sucks that you can't stand it up. I like having my consoles vertically.
From what i have experienced with using both, is that the PS4 starts to get really noisy after a decent gaming session , where as my Xb1 doesn't change at all.
From what i can see is the XB1 is designed to be on as long as your tv is on.
Console gamers will complain about console designs but not lack of 60fps games? Or lack graphics options?
Seems the plastic coating is more important.
It's sat on my entertainment stands shelf next to my TV box, and is yet to move since I bought it. Size is no issue.. Always got another shelf for my ps4 when it arrives
When I'm in the middle of playing a game, I always look into my entertainment center and think wow this console is bulky. It totally ruins the experience of gaming for me.
My God people, it looks awesome in my entertainment center. Smaller than my surround sound, and smaller than my directv dvr.
Very true. A bit more r & d could of helped. There is no real need to design it so large
didn't stop the media calling the phat PS3 a George Foreman grill before, right?
https://www.google.com.my/s...
why should the Xbone get any special treatment for its size? nobody is denying that it's indeed bulky!
It's also whisper quiet, which is a good thing.
This article is typical front page of N4G fare. Nothing to see here. Another day, another bash Xbox and Nintendo front page article.
I really don't care about the size.. But if your going to make it that big give it some life with a better design other than a box! Lol... Unless he tried to mimic the name too, and what was he trying to mimic off the dash board? Cause I don't see it...
Both consoles are pretty ugly. But i have no problems with its size. Its not like im constantly moving the damn thing around.
when you take into consideration that the X1 has a technical level similar to Ps4 and X1 also has its powerbox outside the console... pehraps it is really justified the thought that the desing of xbox one is flawed and falls short... a rushed work? i don't know, but i bet X1 slim is coming soon... (not to mention X1 HD which is difficult to be replaced)
I really don't have an issue with the console size, It sits on top of my PS4, on my shelf, I don't pick it up and carry it anywhere, and given the overheating issues MS had with the 360, I figured the main idea was get a console where it could breath, be cooler, quiet, so I figured the design would be what they released. It is what is is and the most important to thing to me is it works, so I am fine with it. If they release a slimmer model then I will take a look at that, but as it is now, I am fine wit it. I don't buy consoles to look at them. Continue playing my games, & apps, & I am happy.
It's bulkier but it don't take much more space then the PS4. And it's more silent then the PS4.
I have both and I have no problem at all with the design on the XBO.
XB1 is big for better cooling but PS4 is smaller and performs fine with less air space. Sony have better engineers when it comes to hardware. I know looks shouldn't really matter but some people like that cool futuristic look that PS4 has, where as XB1 looks like a VHS player. All the Xbox consoles looked bulky to me except slim 360 looked pretty good.
finally someone agrees with me all the other xbox's indeed do look like crap but the slim 360 was definitely beautiful. and the 360 controller was the best controller ever the x1 controller sux in comparison. the sticks are much taller and the thumbs on top of them are far smaller. they nearly had perfection with the 360 controller and ruin it with the x1 controller.
Xbox One is totally fugly...but you're not meant to look at it, so go on and play those games ;)
Funny, my parents never exploded when we got our oversized VCR back in the day...
I use to crack on how it looks like a combo DVD\VCR but now I kinda like the design.
Hold on, hold on, "Microsoft's popular game console"????? Sorry man but I had to laugh at that one!!!
what a stupid article you planning on carrying it in your pocket or what? mines safely under the entertainmenmt center
yeah im done with that noise (pun intended) from the xbox 360 era. I am grateful how quiet and smooth the Xbox One runs.
Mine doesnt have eject errors and mine isn't noisy
You tried to make a general claim and you fell flat on your face.
Return to sanity already.
@Sanity
And quite a few have issues with the Xbox One.
Whats your point again?
Just because a few people have in issue with the system doesn't mean that every PS4 owner has issues with it.
Thanks for contradicting yourself by going from all to only a few.
I don't understand it. The XB1 looks nothing like a VCR nor does is it bulky. I think it's a great size and fits perfectly with my other devices I have under my TV.
It resembles electronics from the 90's namely VCR's just in it's general shape. It's more refined though, and not as angular as those devices from back then.
It looked really big at the initial reveal, and subsequent comparison shots of various consoles. But overall, it's not as bad as some make it out to be in reality. It's not as stylish as some other consoles, but there is nothing really wrong with it.
I hate it. got the sunset bundle and its taking up a lot of space on my desk, I really, realy think it's too big.
although the PS4 is surprisingly sleek and awesome, I like the look of xbox one and hope that even when the inevitable slim model comes out it will keep its monolith style cause I think its striking difference between the two consoles.
the size, eh I cleared a whole shelf for it so its all good haha
It is HUGE, it weighs a thousand pounds, its the size of nebraska, the UI is cluttered, slow, laggy, inefficie nt and terrible. Its got a huge external power brick,no exchangeable hardrive and the controller is terrible. The installs take a whole year too.
PS4 is just way better in almost every way.
As much as I agree, I believe they were trying for an "understated" design/look to blend-in more than stand out, it certainly was a slight risk to take, but at the end of the day if it performs that's all I'd really care about.
It isn't like it's butt-ugly or anything though.
Seems fair comment overall, it's the bulkiest console I have ever owned in 30 years with original xbox very close 2nd. I find it amazing it's so big and still has an external powerbrick, shows you how good songs hardware design is though.
"But the reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you’re pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it. There’s always an interesting dynamic between engineering and design, and constraints around performance.”
What a load of hogwash. You do know that the PS4 actually exists right? It's about the same size as the PS3 Slim and has all the power of the XB1, if not more.
Yes, and it runs a lot hotter and louder than my X1 when playing games. So, it's not really 'hogwash'.
When I first got my PS4 I was a little concerned about how much more heat it was putting out compared to the Xbox. I had to clear the other things off of the shelf in my cabinet to stop the fan ramping up when playing. My Xbox is on a shelf the same size and, even after hours of gaming, the fan doesn't get louder and there doesn't seem to be any real difference in heat output.
It's certainly not an issue but if you own both you will notice the difference.
I always thought that my Japanese PS3 60GB was pretty much silent but when I got my 360 Slim, which was, I suddenly noticed the fan on the PS3 and I realised that I thought it was silent because I was so used to the jet fans on the original 360. It comes down to having something to compare to and that affects your perception. If you're used to a sound in the background you learn to block it out.
I don't know how that guy dares to make that excuse when the PS4 is clearly thin, small and doesn't has heat problems and oh, it does not has a power brick.
The X1 has an horrible and bulky design, period. There are no excuses.
PS: PS4 so loud? What? My PS4 is so silent that sometimes I even forget is on! But I guess I must have another model/s
This thing is so big that I accidentally put it up on an iPhone and turned it into an iPad
my grandma actually successfully played a tape of Family Matters in it. next level stuff..
-Attempts to shove tape into the console and breaks it-
Oops
Did I do that?
Speaking of design, wonder what PS4's drag coefficient is. Seems pretty streamlined.
When I see an XBox ONE console the design even though it is simple along with the control pad, both remind me so much of Halo.
Truthfully when you look at any Halo design whether it be Master Chief's armor or the vehicles' and various weaponry and look closely at the XBox ONE console/control pad, I just see a lot of similarities.
I love my Xbox One, Its big and bold. Half the case is a fan, so its quiet and runs really cool, unlike the PS4 that gets quite hot and is loud by comparison. It looks great in my black entertainment center. No complaints here. With all things considered its a well designed console.
XBONE is bulky,Perfect put it under your computer desk, instead of on top... like a gaming PC.
Not really a design. Its a black rectangual box. No shape or neat lines, or edges. I would rather something smaller to be honest. Then there's the power brick... :(
I may just be the only one who likes tje design of the xbox one. Would of been better to have the power brick internal tho.
My only complaint is the power brick
I've never understood the obsession with a piece of technology's size; unless it's so big that it doesn't fit in your entertainment center, or if you don't have an entertainment center, it creates a crater in your floor, I can't imagine why you would obsess over it. Or for that matter, why you'd purchase it in the first place.
I have owned an absurd amount of technological devices over the years, and never once have I removed any of these things from their box and said, "No way. I don't care how much fun this thing might give me. It is ugly, and big, and stupid. I am offended. Small things for me from now on. Small all the way."
Once a device I purchase and hook up is put in its place, I honestly never really notice its physical appearance again. Yes, I use it and put things in it, but as long as I can use it and put things in it, I really don't care what the f*ck it looks like.
Some people worry about how their stuff looks to guests that are invited over to their homes. If you are inviting guests over to your home who criticize your belongings, then I guess I have no criticisms for you. You are simply outside my realm of experience. Good luck in life.
Some people have small entertainment systems, others want small technology, with smaller iterations... like shruken down consoles 5 years into the life span. Its personal taste.
Once something can be small and still performs the same or better, makes a big difference to some. I like smaller tech that does the same or more. Some don't.
It's understandable that you have a preference. Since you have this preference, you probably would research any product that you were about to purchase to ascertain its size.
I'll admit that at first I was impressed by the Gamecube's small size, and its game discs' small size, but I didn't really notice either of these things much once I plugged the small system in and started popping small game discs into it.
But as they say, to each their own. My only complaint is against people that buy something and then complain that it's too big or too ugly. At least do some research. I have my own bizarre obsessions, but I tend to counter them with a bit of Googling so I don't end up bitching pointlessly on the internet about my purchase.
My Xbox One looks F'n fantastic in my entertainment center, and it blends-in very nicely with the rest of my equipment.
My whole set-up is actually quite sexy. It gives me a slight chubby every time I sit in front of it.
Wait, so they got to talk to this guy and what they mostly ask about are the aesthetics of the console and the controller?
Lame article.
It's like when Fox News interviews Bush
or
It's like when MSNBC interviews Obama
You know you aren't getting much info that matters.
This article would of been much better if some hard hitting questions were asked.
oooh such design
big black boxes and a huge honkin power brick to boot
GAWD I LOVE MY PS4. Small, light, unobtrusive ... looks like quality. X1 looks like a betamax with side units to do shit (kinect, power brick).
MS never was known for their aesthetics.
One thing I do find is that my xbox one runs quieter than my ps4. I start that baby up and it sounds like a jet taking off!
I like my one it looks more expensive than the ps4 that why Sony's console was cheaper.
Craig Chapple writes :
"Designer Carl Ledbetter tells Develop how Microsoft considered building the motion sensor into the console itself, and why he’s not sad to see it unbundled
The Kinect has long been a part controversial, yet also innovative and defining inclusion to the Xbox One.
Microsoft was once committed to the motion sensing peripheral, even willing to charge £80 more than Sony’s PS4, such was its faith in the tech.
As the man who designed the hardware, Carl Ledbetter, tells Develop, early on Microsoft even toyed with the idea of building the Kinect into the Xbox One itself. A permanent, non-removable feature. And one of the key reasons it decided against it were based on looks."
So you want he premium version of the Xbox One?
Get the kinect. It works great for me.
I haven't hooked my kinect as of yet, not sure if I want the man peering into my living room, haha!
well get rid of you cellphone, computers, tablets,an d anything that has a camera or internet to features. if someone wants to spy in on you, they can and an xbox one or ps4 camera will be the least of your worries, so just have fun and stop the conspiracy nonsense.
Carl Ledbetter, the man who designed the Kinect for the Xbox One, says he isn't bothered by the decision to unbundle the Kinect with the Xbox One console. Despite all the hard work he put into it, he agrees that choices for the consumer are what's best. At some point in time, there was talking about building the Kinect into the console itself so that it wasn't removable.
He was excited to stand in line and purchase it because he knew he created an awesome machine
Carl Ledbetter sounds like some old blues guitar guru.
