This, of course, enraged those who enjoyed playing games. Gamers already had to put up with the stigma of an antisocial geek for the longest time and they didn't want something like this to push everything backwards once again.

I don’t gamble and I don’t watch esports but there are calculated predictions that esports will overtake physical sports in popularity which many people love to bet on. So it’s natural that gambling could be a growth area too.
Whatever the gaming industry is like now in ten years time it will have evolved for better or worse so the console manufacturers have to anticipate changes and be ready for them.
I can predict there will be certain websites and YouTubers that will get moralistic about this but they cannot kill off gambling.
No way. Physical sports have billions of fans. eSports is popular but it won't get that popular.
I don't think betting is all that great a thing a game company should be associating themselves with. Maybe I'm too much of a prude when it comes to my gaming hobby but the thought of young kids getting targeted for betting ads seems likely.
I'm hoping this is just patenting it to make sure they own the rights. If they got into gambling, there would be a major conflict of interest considering their EVO ties and their position in the gaming industry.
Gaming wise this doesn't mean much if anything. But it does make me very bullish on my Sony investment. I like the stock.
A new House of Lords Committee report states that loot boxes in videogames should be classified as gambling as soon as possible.
While loot boxes share the same inherent rush and addiction that gambling provides, by pure definition they are not the same. There's no chance of loss in a loot box. You are always receiving the value you spend on the boxes though you may be less excited or upset by what you received.
Loot boxes are actually a lot like trading cards which I heard are also being classified as gambling.
The NHS' mental health boss has said loot boxes are "setting kids up for addiction by teaching them to gamble".

I don't, I think they make enough money as is, a sports game is basically the same game every year with a roster change and maybe an updated UI, so development costs should be not that high but they want to make billions upon billions in profit, for every single game, every single year by wiping the slate clean on MT's, on top of the billions they already make by you buying it full price, games yes are more expensive to make now, but at the same time there is a much bigger market with much, much bigger sales volume

Parents play a role in this, but it's a role they wouldn't even have to fill if companies weren't normalising gambling mechanics early in childrens/young adults brains to make them more receptive to it in the long term.
I didn't grow up with all this BS in my games, so I smell a rat 1,000 miles away when I see it, but if my brain was being wired from an age when I didn't know any better I wouldn't say anything and would just lap it all up.
