Matt of RGN writes, "Pixel Piracy involves building your own ship, fighting other ships and exploring islands in an expansive world. A game that increases in difficulty as you continue to explore it and scratch the surface of it. The game itself seems very simplistic at its roots is rather deep and engaging and you can’t just coast along doing minimal work. Early in the game, you may find yourself not having as much of a fun time but as you explore and build up your ship and its crew you will gain a larger interest in the game and your time will start getting eaten away."

Making and drawing comparisons between games is a double-edged sword when it comes to reviews, in my eye at least. On one hand, comparing and contrasting is one of the more effective tools that one can use to inform and get one’s point across, and when it comes to games, there are plenty of differences and similarities among titles which helps to facilitate this style of writing.

Pixel Piracy is an open-world retro pirate sim. That phrase alone will make Pixel Piracy an instant buy for many. It’s the type of game we dream of: adventuring, plundering, looting, training up a crew of pirates, crafting the best damn pirate ship on the seven seas. To top it off, press releases have name dropped Terraria developers as being part of the project. This was going to be epic. I could hardly wait. Ah, but avast me hearties, epic this is not. Pirates, ye be warned.
