Well deserved, it is an amazing game

itBourne3910d ago

It is hard to pick a single game from the entire generation. I think its a much more viable argument though, that Naughty Dog were the best developers of the generation.

TheTwelve3910d ago

I didn't like Last of Us but after all of these awards I'll be playing it again very soon.

deafdani3909d ago

Wait, what? If you didn't like it, how does itngetting a bunch if awards change your perception of it?

I refuse to believe you would be such a tool. Care to elaborate on your comment?

TheTwelve3908d ago

I didn't like the game, but I'm guessing I must have missed something considering the fact that it's getting so much praise.

So I'm going to try it again. I bought the game; I've every right to play it again.

Why does this cause such vehemence on the internet? lol

deafdani3908d ago

Ok, that's a pretty valid response. Thanks for clarifying. :)

miyamoto3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

I think its a tie between Uncharted 2 and TLOU or Uncharted 2 is the game of the generation. That is my opinion. But I understand why gamers choose TLOU because it is new and got millions of exposure from tons of play throughs from modern day mainstream YouTube commentators like PewDiePie and the RadBrad.

Anyways its a win win for Naughty Dog the greatest developers on the planet today.

@ the monkey below
"This is the generation where realism was favored over true beauty."

I remember very clearly during the 8bit, 16bit, 32bit, 64bit, 128bit generations how developers try their darn best to mimic reality or achieve realism with what graphics hardware they have at their disposal and now you are talking shit and despising years of hard work now because your Nintendo is trapped into making just simple cartoony kiddie games?
Crabs-in-a-bucket mentality like yours drags video gaming to the backwards sorry state Nintendo is in right now.

MONKEYDLUFFY3910d ago

I agree this game defined this generation. This was the generation where creativity died. This is the generation where game play took a backseat. This was a generation where you had to put your game into overused cliche tropes to get it to sell. This is the generation where realism was favored over true beauty.

TLOU truly defines this Generation.

xHeavYx3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

I feel some pain coming from you *checks comment history* Oh, Nintendo lover, no wonder...

@Below
You a video game lover? Sure, whatever you say

MONKEYDLUFFY3910d ago

I'm a videogame lover. I like good video games. I have a ps3 and a psp. I have games I enjoy on all of them.

rarity3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

looking at your comment history you're nothing more than a butthurt nintendo fanboy if you actually played the game you never would've said something like that ya can't sit there and say the last of us isn't beautiful nor fun it has amazing gameplay and a beautiful story lol and what do you mean more realistic how realistic is a infected human apocalypse exactly?

Volkama3910d ago

TLOU has quite bad gameplay. Are you telling me you would have taken some enjoyment from it if the story wasn't there? Throwing bricks and bottles at people is a bit funny I 'spose.

Before people jump down my throat please note I'm not saying TLOU is unworthy of plaudits. Gameplay just wasn't it's strength, that's all.

Gameplay in the raw old-fashioned sense of the word is still valuable, but there is definitely validity in crafting a cinematic experience or a strong interactive story.

I really enjoyed Heavy Rain and The Walking Dead too, they're great games but I sure wouldn't claim they have "great gameplay".

scott1823910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

^

I disagree, I think the gameplay was one of it's strongest points. It was some of the funnest most addictive gameplay all gen.

rarity3910d ago

please forgive me I sounded extremely immature. it's just what you said sounded really silly.

Ezz20133910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

@volkama

strange that you say that
because the first reason to go back to this awesome game for me was the gameplay to play in different ways and how enemies AI react every time
not just the story (which is amazing as well)

i love every thing about the last of us fantastic gameplay and i find it above any other TPS game i have played this gen
and as it seems i'm not the only one who think that
since it's the game with most GOTY/GOTG awards from both critics and gamers

and i can't believe you trying to put TLOU (which is 20+ hours pure Gameplay) in the same genre as TWD and HR

Ezz20133910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

double post

Volkama3909d ago

@ezz I'm not putting it in the same genre. I'm picking extreme examples in which a game can be great without great game play. I could have gone for mass effect or Bioshock or something, but the point is less obvious in those cases.

You guys love the gameplay, I get it. I stand by my opinion that the gameplay alone isn't much fun, but to each his own. It has a well received multiplayer component (that I admit I didn't try) so maybe my opinion isn't typical. I'm honestly a bit surprised on that one, but not overly bothered. We can like different things.

deafdani3909d ago

I played it. Last of Us is beautiful indeed, and it's quite engaging, but most of its virtues are due to its excellent (and I mean EXCELLENT) narrative. Last of Us, in my opinion, is the epitome of linear games, where everything on it is used in order to deliver the story in the most effective way.

However, the actual gameplay? Yes, it's enjoyable, but nothing special at all. In terms of pure GAMEPLAY there are a lot of games that came out this year that absolutely surpass it... never mind the entire generation. And in the end, gameplay is always more important than narrative, where games are concerned. At least for me.

I perfectly get why this game has been this year's best for many people, and I respect it... it's all preferences, after all. But it's not my personal game of the year, and definitely does not my "game of the generation". Not even close.

Still a pretty damn good game on its own, though.

gillri3910d ago

Bit overboard there, many games define this generation

DARK WITNESS3910d ago

I think what he said is true in most cases... it's just the wrong game being held up.

If there is a game of this generation that sums up all the negative points listed it's... .COD!!

Last of Us, brings to light the few good things about last gen.

The question now will be this gen starting, will we see more games like TLOU or more games like COD?

Ron_Danger3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

To answer your question, it all boils down to which console you buy (speaking mainly on the track record of 1st party devs/ exclusives.)

Ron_Danger3910d ago

Dude, you sounded like you had trouble typing that cause it was too hard to see the keyboard while looking down your nose. You impressed no one on this sight by trying to sound like a gameplay snob.

HarryMasonHerpderp3910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

@Monkey
Too bad your post makes no sense since The Last Of Us gameplay was awesome.

miyamoto3910d ago

@ the monkey
"This is the generation where realism was favored over true beauty."

What is your idea of true beauty?

I remember very clearly during the 8bit, 16bit, 32bit, 64bit, 128bit generations how developers try their darn best to mimic reality or achieve realism with what graphics hardware they have at their disposal and now you are talking shit and despising years of hard work now because your Nintendo is trapped into making just simple cartoony kiddie games?

Crabs-in-a-bucket mentality like yours drags video gaming to the backwards sorry state Nintendo is trying to pull video games in right now as a plaything for little kids.

Nintendo will never ever lead to video games industry to a mature industry like the film or music industry has achieved over the years.

They will always stick to the kiddie and sucker mom cash cow just to make money and drag video games industry to their own image- child's plaything.

Is that your idea of true beauty?

@Volkama

What is your idea of fun game play...jumping over the same old blocks of bricks pits to save a princess?

Volkama3910d ago

Not so sure you really care but since you asked :-)

Gun play I'll take quake 3 arena.
More strategic cover shooting I like the first gears.
Hand to hand... Well it isn't TLOU.
Stealth I just plain don't enjoy as a mechanic in any game so far, which may factor in to my opinion on the gameplay.

That's off the top of my head, and purely referenced against different gameplay elements of TLOU. It's by no means I list of my favourite games...

I'll say again though, I'm not hating on TLOU. Just don't think gameplay was an outstanding feature in the package.

Ol_G3909d ago

You can't say stuff like that on n4g i do agree with you on some points this gen we got the most gray brown fps shooters a lot of devs closed this gen after failed projects And they also introduced the regenerating health bar turning every shooter or wrpg into a casual game
This was also the gen where people said yes to microtransactions and day one dlc
so if TLOU defines this gen then...........
I'd rather stop talking here

S2Killinit3910d ago

this game deserves every praise. i thoroughly enjoyed it.

JsonHenry3910d ago

I feel conflicted about this. Yes I thought the game was great. Fantastic game overall! The story was solid and the gameplay while being nothing new was still "tight" and well done.

But when I think of "game" and leave out the good story and voice acting (the parts of the game that isn't actually gameplay) I can't help but feel that Dark Souls would be my vote for game of the generation based on gameplay mechanics and overall "game-like" presentation.

BlackTar1873910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

Demon Souls over Dark Souls.

Last Of Us
Souls Series
Fallout
Xcom
Battlestations Midway

were all my favorite games from this gen.

Honorable Mention:
BioShock 1

gillri3910d ago

I know opinions and all but thats a pretty lame list

BlackTar1873910d ago

I don't know how you can call that list lame but whatever.

Ol_G3909d ago

Well if you only enjoyed 7 games or so in the past 8 years yeah that list is pretty lame no matter the titles on it

BlackTar1873907d ago

OI_G i mean cuz i was clearly saying i only enjoyed those games over this entire gen.

Sometimes people are so stupid it amazes me.

I love Last Of Us it is one of my two favorite games of this gen. It Would be hard for me to say it a better game Than Demon's Soul's. Demon's Soul's was groundbreaking I have had a experience like it in very long time. last game that pulled me in was Panzer dragon Saga. Some things you don't see coming were you can't stop playing the game. The Last Of Us is a great game and one of the best Game of the Generation. The other in my opinion is Demon's Soul's . Dark Soul's was not as good as Demon's Soul's . Dark Soul's had a lot of technical flaws Bad frame rate problems.Back stabbing was overpowered and horrible overused in PVP also it was harder to get the multiplayer to work properly. Multiplayer perform better in demon's Soul's. http://www.playstationlifes... http://www.gamespot.com/art...

user74029313910d ago (Edited 3910d ago )

game of the generation only on ps3

lol a disagree for stating a fact? lol

KRUSSIDULL3910d ago

I think they disagree with you because it's an opinion in the sense that their game of the generation is on another platform.

PS I didn't disagree with you but my game of the generation goes to the Mass Effect trilogy but I'm sure TLOU would be one of my top picks if I had played it. :)

spiderman 2 $40 from $70 so it's priced right now as a expansion pack like MM.,

andy8555d ago

Pretty decent expansion pack then saying i got 30-40 hours out if it.

just_looken55d ago

I can get 30hours out of a job outside does not mean it was good.

But i know no matter what i post or prove people love there nerfed spiderman or playing as a blind person for 5 hours then mary jane shehulk for another 12hours.

I am so glad today's "gamer" was not around for the ps3/360 era these new gamers are way to easy to please and have killed gaming.

andy8555d ago

It was good though. Are you actually saying it wasn't a good game? And blind? The person you play as was deaf and it was 10 mins not 5 hours. Doesn't seem like you've even played it by that comment. And MJ was...30 mins at most? Not sure how you get 40 mins into 17 hours exactly

CobraKai55d ago

@just_looken

I’ve been playing since the Sega Master System. I love Spiderman 2. There’s too much going for it to be a simple expansion pack. I felt Miles Morales could fall into the expansion pack range.

If you didn’t like it, it’s fine. That’s what’s great about opinions, there are no wrong ones, just different ones.

StormSnooper54d ago

You guys have to understand, they don’t have anything even close to it on his preferred system. There is a whole psychology behind his comment.

lol I was in the ps3/360 era and spider man 2 would of been a massive hit still.

Please don’t try to represent us gamers from that time. You are not a good example, always complaining and being negative lol.

CobraKai55d ago

@just
I mean, it’s New York. You can’t exactly change the map.

It sounds like you’re hard to please vs gamers being easy to please. You mentioned great games. Games whose sequels had very similar gameplay with each other with very minimal changes or upgrades.

Im with pwnmaster. Don’t speak for us. It sounds like probably only started gaming from PS360 era.

Rebel_Scum55d ago

Peter Parker lives in New York, where else do you expect the map to be?

Using the same map/location is not a problem.

On topic: In my region the base game is $80. Still not low enough for me to dive in. Not that Im in a rush. Havent even finished the 1st one’s dlc yet.

just_looken55d ago

The map still has asset's buildings the the first game its like madden yeah same stadium but can you change that madden 14 logo?

Not to mention they never added shield basses basically unique interiors you can explore off missions or add in jersey.

pwnmaster300055d ago

Sony pony??
Are you a child? Lmao

Just stop man. It’s embarrassing.
We can like games and not be a fanboy.
Gaming shouldn’t be taken this serious. Relax lol

just_looken55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

"lol I was in the ps3/360 era and spider man 2 would of been a massive hit still.

Please don’t try to represent us gamers from that time. You are not a good example, always complaining and being negative lol. "

You come at me calling me a bad example talking like this game is gods gift to us and on any sony article you defend them no matter what.

But now i am a child? what because i used logic again this site you throw facts at people they cry to the admins to get me off here again or play the victim card.

pwnmaster300055d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Lmao gods gift to us what. I said it would have been a massive hit not a perfect game. It’s a good game get over it.

And this is why I said what I said.
“ But i know no matter what i post or prove people love there nerfed spiderman or playing as a blind person for 5 hours then mary jane shehulk for another 12hours.”

And you’re still proving me right. God forbid people like a certain game.
And BS about me on every sony article defending them. I like games and praised every games I

“ But now i am a child? what because i used logic again this site you throw facts at people they cry to the admins to get me off here again or play the victim card.”

Your opinions are not facts and the fact you think they are is sad. Step off video games for awhile.

just_looken55d ago

Na its fine you go ahead belive 200 million dollars makes sense for 1 game when 80 created a trilogy on 360.

I live without blinders unlike others.

pwnmaster300055d ago (Edited 55d ago )

I know he has a celebrity like status but unless he's announcing his game soon idc what he has to say from this point on.

We need announcement something from him.

Crows90111d ago

The dude is a nobody. He's also wrong. Naughty dog is the uncharted and Jak daxter studio.

They only made one universally praised last of us game. They're not know as "the last of us studio" but they are currently known as the "remake" studio.

Lightning77111d ago

I like his games tbh I'm just more upset at the fact that he's been talking and talking and not showing anything. I'm an actual fan of his work, don't cars if that's that's a popular take or not.

If he has nothing to show or talk about. I don't care about his interviews, his red carpet appearances or what's next for last Of Us 2 TV, leave that to Hollywood. You don't see SP, Bend, or any other studio doing what he's doing. They're remaining quiet and focused as most PS studios do. He should do the same. The next thing I wanna hear him say is "now heres our game" we know that probably won't be for another year or so, so he needs to remain silent and stay out of the limelight for awhile.

AsunaYuukiTheFlash111d ago

You are wrong. LOU2 won a lot of GOTY and was highly rated. It's okay to dislike the game but saying that ND just made one critical acclaimed LOU game is just hating at this point.

rippermcrip111d ago

Kind of a weird interview. No substance, hardly any questions. It's almost like they forgot to post the whole thing or something.

neomahi111d ago

Oh brother...... It's like a balloon filling with helium. He's got nothing new to say. Naughty Dog went from being a studio of numerous developers to being about him and what HE does. Bruce Straley was the co-creator of The Last of Us, and he left--I think for the same reason Christophe Balestra left and since then, Naughty Dog haven't been the same. PlayStation is incredibly woke, as all businesses seem to be these days, ignorant to what's really going on sacrificing the greater for peanuts, but I think they left because of the uprising political atmosphere. They knew there was nothing they could do about it and an attempt to try and combat it, in today's society would end them up in legal trouble so, they just left, what else can you do when the opposition behaves like a child, screams and yells louder than you want to in raged fits, and will throw lawsuits at you at whatever chance they can, but you don't play that way, so they left. And Naughty Dog hasn't been the same since.

Naughty Dog was huge at one time! They were the underdog that became the top dog but, the direction it's fine, just watch and wait. It's ego, and Druckmanns ego of thinking they're untouchable and can just coast along, will drop them rock bottom, in due time, they could see the same fate as Xbox's teams met. Fans will turn on Naughty Dog because A) Naughty Dog aren't producing, they're not what they once were.
B) Gamers ARE growing tired of the woke culture overtaking their lifetime hobby. They're just more silent about it, it's the quiet cool

anast111d ago

Non of this makes sense. I would like to think you didn't spend too much time writing it.

Crows90111d ago

I hope you didn't spend much time reading..it...cuz obviously you didnt understand it. But that's okay. There's many other comments to read...

MIDGETonSTILTS17111d ago

You project your own views on the world, and that is a mistake.

Crows90111d ago

Um...so you project someone else view on the world? What are you talking about?! We all project our view on the world lol...smh

anast111d ago

It's called perspective. I understand that. But I don't understand the poster.

smashman98111d ago

you know it's not his fault that people are interested in what he says, right?

Also, Naughty Dog is bigger than ever.

Crows90111d ago

Smaller....where's their last big game? Yeah...I remember when they were actually releasing heavy hitters.

smashman98110d ago

@Crows90 It was in 2020 and despite what a vocal minority says it was critically acclaimed and the 2020 game of the year. Not only that but The Last of Us is also a critically acclaimed television series and PlayStation's most successful foray into Film and TV yet.

So yes, Naughty Dog is bigger than ever, and just because you don't vibe with them or whatever does not change that fact.

anast111d ago

He's a solid theatre arts person, but he's not a philosopher. Being good at one thing doesn't mean he's Descartes.

DarXyde111d ago

I believe that philosophers are more principled than Druckmann, to be honest. It's fascinating that The Last of Us Part II was literally inspired by the Israel-Palestine conflict and was a needed commentary on humanity and ending the cycle of violence, only to have some questionable commentary after 7 October.

I don't hate the guy as some others seem to. He's been a big part of some great games, but I'll never understand the obsession with hanging on all of his statements.

Chard111d ago (Edited 111d ago )

That's a good point in relation to 7 Oct - a far more important issue where valid criticisms could have been made of this guy, but most here seem thoroughly distracted by trivial issues

anast111d ago

@DarXyde

Like all artists he has a signature. People that have an agenda will try to look for that signature and use it. This is why a lot of "journalist/game influencers" hang on every word. Most of us just enjoy his work and get hyped when he mentions something about a possible new game.

@Chard
"a far more important issue where valid criticisms could have been made of this guy"

Which is?

MIDGETonSTILTS17111d ago

Sony should try and stay radio silence outside of hard reveals.

It’s painful to wait for any info at all, but it’s less painful than skimming an interview that avoids all details whatsoever.

Commit to radio silence, Sony. You can afford to leverage the trust in gaming output that you’ve cultivated.

anast111d ago

That wouldn't be a smart decision. There must be a constant stream of connection in today's world.

MIDGETonSTILTS17108d ago

When a constant stream of connection delays a game 1-2 years, and said games take 5 years to make anyways…. Sony fans are better off trusting Sony to deliver than expecting frequent confirmation.
