Kerbal: The best of the indie games to date?

With the seemingly "new" tide of indie players and developers coming every day, one has to ask the question: What's the best indie game to date? To me the unequivocal champ is Kerbal Space Program. I've heard this game is a complete pain in the ass to learn but well worth it when you do. I'll have to give it a spin.

if ya do it without any mods put in it's a pain in the ass alright but there's mods out there to help determine flight paths and all that jazz

Its a brilliant game.

My suggestion is to try your hardest to learn the controls and manoeuvres without any of the mods that help you (mechjeb) and then when you do have a really good grasp of the mechanics you might want to add it in later to take some of the less interesting things away and automate them.

For example launching and then orbiting to start is fairly simple when you have a good grasp and so becomes a good job to let mechjeb do. Mainly because you know you would do it easily yourself so it is a bit tedious after 20 or 30 odd missions.

In fairness most astronauts relied on major automation even from the early days of manned spaceflight. So I don't see any harm in letting a mod do the basic stuff and let you concentrate on the more complicated interesting stuff- as soon as you squeezed all the fun out of learning the basics that is.
