The Xbox 360 version doesnt have near the scale of problem as this. Odds are, the Xbox 360 problems are just bad discs (normal) -- while the widely reported PS3 is an actual *problem*, hence this frenzy to figure out what the problem is *on the PS3*.

Of course the "priority" is to fix the broken PS3 implementation, because there isnt a problem on the Xbox 360.

Reinstalled and its now fine. Also deleted some old demos and stuff. No more problems. And yeah the free online thing is a gem.

P.S. Software patches are easy. Hardware patches aren't so.

Only people claiming that are Sony fans trying to defend their system. The fact is the problem is a THOUSAND times worse on PS3. Like other commenters have said the 360 version problems are RARE while the PS3 version has 2 systematic issues. First the cache crashing issue and second the PSN lock up issue.

You'll say I'm lying but I do own both versions. I'm a total GTA fan and wanted to be able to play with my friends on both PSN and XBL. I've played over 20 hours single player and maybe 10 hours in multiplayer on 360 and had no problems. Maybe a couple of minor pop ups but no lock up issues.

Haven't had any cache crashes on PS3 but I've only played like 3 hours single player... Tried to get online with my PSN friends all week and it locks up everytime unless its like 1am in the morning. Tried the work arounds like logging out of PSN before launching the game... Well that one lets you get into single player atleast but soon as you fire up multiplayer from the phone it locks up again.

How many games have to launch with broken PSN functionality before you people start pointing the finger at Sony rather than the developers?

COD4 - MP broken for first week
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - MP broken for first week
Team Fortress 2 - MP broken for weeks after launch
MGSO Beta last for 2 seconds on launch day
Playstation Store update can't load images for 2 weeks after launch
GTA IV - MP broken still 6 days and counting

well i had the issue of it not wanting to load on my 20gb or my 80gb. then i read about this in the offical ps fourm and what do ya know it worked. this really pisses me off as i bought the ltd ed. and i didnt spend that type of money to have so many issues with the game. wel at least i can plpay single player until a patch comes out.

After i signed up with Rockstar social club
So then i signed out of PSN and it worked fine
And then i had to change my email on my PSN account to get it to load again when signed in and it works fine again

So my problem happened after i signed with R* Social club and the R* account wouldn't let me change my email address on there so thats why i changed it on my PSN account

I have the 60GB PS3 and my Online connection is always enabled when I start up GTA4 and I don't have any freezing issues or anything when starting up saved games.

And it's not like the Xbox 360 isn't having some of the same issues either.

Many who have experienced this problem, have reported that they use a wireless router to connect their PS3 online.

Thats also why more PS3 owners experienced this problem and less 360 owners.

Because 360 is not future proof and does not include WIFI. Most 360 owners use wired connection and it seems like in this particular instance, it worked out better for them.

But who are we kidding. 2 weeks from now, Rockstar will come with a patch and all problems will be fixed. In the meantime, disable your internet connection and play the massive single player mode. By the time you finish the game, online will be fixed. In short, 360 still doesnt come with WIFI and is still not future proof. WIFI is a frikkin BLESSING.

Should you be done in the next few days, just enjoy HAZE demo untill then.

Some people lockup in the first cut scene...no matter what they do...some lockup randomly in the game....some lockup in the hard disc install of the game.

But I haven't had a problem playing the game since I got it, online or offline. In fact, I played online for about 2 hours yesterday.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my hard drive is somewhat empty. I'm only using about 10Gb of the 60. Maybe some people should try deleting a bunch of data and then reinstalling the game data again. I don't know if that will fix things, but you never know. Besides, I really doubt logging out of the PSN works considering there are a lot of people playing online.

It's HDD problems. Game data is being installed on bad sectors and the game code is too unstable to handle the missing data. Ok this isnt fact, but i reckon its close to the mark.

I can recall last gen the xbox verion of gta3 was superior to the ps2. What I am getting at is the ps3 is all spec numbers and nothing more. GTA4 for the ps3 runs at 630p you'd think it would be running at 1080p. All games play better on the 360.

and the obvious "630p"...., then explain how the hell has Guerrilla Games managed to pull off Deferred Rendering with 4xMSAA @ 720p?, Heavenly Sword = 720p + 4xAA, and first/second party games are only reaching 30% of the PS3's power!!, the Burnout developers have flat out said that they couldn't use the RSX's full power, the power was restricted, and still is for multiplatform developers.

I don't claim that GTA IV would of ran at 1080p, it depends on the developer's skill.

Hardware?, that made no sense, the PS3's RAM is the fastest in the market 3.2Ghz, the 360's RAM is shared making it 2x 700Mhz = 1.4Ghz, and having shared RAM, it eats into eachothers performance, therefore affecting it, the RSX, it's 1.8TFLOPS ALONE of total performance, and did you not read that Super StarDust HD article?....

This is BS. This was the first weekend for GTA and alot of people could not log in due to internet congestion. Basically everyone was trying to log to online. Why do i think this. Well I had a bunch of my friends playing online and they kept sending me friend invites but I could not join. But they could. Which leads to the servers being packed with GTA addicts.

Ive have had a few freezes while playing the game which ive found are remidied by signing out of the PSN.

The online on the PSN is therefore unplayable if your signed out. But even when you do sign in to play it online actually getting into a game is a nightmare and you can get disconnected when your actually in the process of playing online.

As for the graphics i guess it depends whether you like the blur effect on the ps3 and the more faded colours. I myself think it looks better on the 360. The colours look more fuller and the game looks sharper.

Couldn't give a s**t whether PS3 fans get upset because of my comment people have a right to know the truth.

I have stopped being pissed off with Rockstar i personally think it's Sonys fault for giving us a Great console but without the great os/network service to back it up.

I am very disappointed with the graphics....and before anyone says anything Im playing on a vga monitor...xbox version does have pop ups where missing textures pop in ...I have to agree that both version are having issues but we have been on these boards to see the ps3 version is having the most...I have not seen a story about xbox fixes for freezing..this is the 2nd story on the ps3 matter.

We all know that GTAIV is the "last" Of the mega titles until Gears2 comes out. Its no real shock that there is a constant smear campaign to try to tarnish the Image of the PS3 by claiming that IT and IT ALONE has problems with GTAIV.Because GTAIV is the last title thats going to move 360's at a beyond normal rate, Microsoft knows this. So they are in full smear mode. As Usual. My Launch 60gb works fine, thats not to say that PS3/360 owners aren't having problems. But there is definitely some unforseen problem that is causing this. The game runs so incredibly well, its hard to believe that Rockstar would knowingly let the game out with the problems that the 360 and the PS3 are having, so whos to say what it is right now?

I know one thing for sure, the PS3's "Problems" can be sorted out with a simple patch from rockstar once they figure out the issue. The 360's Hardware failure, cant. bought back in February 2007, and so far i haven't had any problems with GTAIV.

i haven't played it online much (i logged on for a few minutes launch day just to give it a look see, but it's been all single player for me).

i feel bad for the folks that are having issues, and i hope my copy doesn't freak out on me anytime soon (i'm only 32% done with the game, after about 20+ hours of playtime, so far). it's not like Rockstar isn't trying to figure out what this issue is.

Your gonna encounter the problem sooner or later, I beat GTA4 in about 28 hours or so, took me almost 40 to get to 90% done, but the first time I turned off my PS3 and turned it back on boom, it hit me Lock ups left and right, I quit game which coincidentally restarted my PS3 and had to turn off PSN it worked after that but you will eventually encounter it if they don't release a patch monday that is, I'm using the 40GB btw.

This is a big issue for the PS3. A unique problem that needs to fixed by Rockstar immediately. 360 users may or may not have the same problem. It's impossible to tell since most 360 users have become numb gaming glitches and the ones that do still care just assumed its a problem with the console. Rockstar can look into that later.

What I find remarkable is that, although this problem may be occurring on the PS3, it seems to be affecting a certain proportion of people albeit a fair amount. However go to the Xbox forums and you'll find people facing the usual problems of disc errors and RROD's playing this game.

Grand Theft Auto IV causing problems on a system is not unique, this is only getting attention because it is the first game however to cause wide-spreading problems on Sony's own platform. It is the first time PS3 fanboys cannot slam Xbox 360 owners for having a console with issues relating to games. However, when you measure the weight of these problems - the PS3 having an issue with the game itself, you realise that it can be resolved with a patch whereas disc errors and hardware failures are greater problems to both the owners and their respected companies.

So in conclusion although this is an embarrassing event for Rockstar, as it is their game not Sony's, people shouldn't get over excited at the prospect for the PS3 staring to have problems similar to the 360 in its past because that is, as we call it here, "begging it"

R* should have made the ps3 version all full motion video like the sega cd days. The cell could handle video so much better and with the storage on the bluray disc its a win win for sony fans. Probably not enough servers and also could be due to Os taking up more room on the Psn meaning there is less memory for DEV to work with.

Don't know how there gonna offer all the features of live unless they completley rewrite the Os. maybe thats why Home is taking so long.

Guess at the end of the day you get what you pay for. Funny that some PS3 only owners say that 360 owners are to poor to buy a ps3 but they are not willing to pay £40 a year for a complete online service. Not to mention games for there console.

COD4 AND GTA4 are by far the best selling games on the PS3. What happened to heavenly sword,unchartered and rachet and clank TOD?

How you go from an ok fanboy to a terrible fanboy post. How you go from bashing the psn to basing the ps3 games? BTW heavenly sword uncharted and r&c all sold well. UC hit a million R&C almost a million heavlenly sword was the only iffy with like half a mil but it was a new IP on a system with not that much units at the time. Doesnt change it from being a great game which it was.

Also BTW I can get online on gta at anytime there was only a problem on the first day for me. And home has nothing to do with the psn...

Okami and the shadow of the collosus didn't sell big numbers but were brilliant experiences.

Played heavenly sword and its great although a bit too easy for me and its sales were no doubt hurt by it length(took 6hrs for me to complete.)

Although there were loads of enemies on screen they were all pretty stupid. Boss battles were the best bits.

I love games shadow of the collosus and okami are both brilliant games i just think its funny that Ps3 gamers talk up there exclusives on this site and then go out and buy COD4 and GTA4.

work for me. i can't even get into the in-game screen. how am i supposed to check if it worked if it freezes at the load screen. how about that gamepro. you fahggets. think they know sh*t. fu*k them and fu*k the person who posted this old sh*tty news story. not only doesnt this "FIX" not work but gtaiv has effected my other games as well. Assassin's Creed Freezes 5mins in. COD4 freeze at a black screen upon leaving a Online match. and i get the famous "An error occurred during start operation(80010514) where as this never happend before. its like R* printed a virus on various copies of the game. at least thats how it seems.

Actually and honestly I been have like 20 hrs of gameplay and im 55% through the game and only once I had load issues and it was an easy fix. I took the gta disc out cleaned it put it back in and it worked.. Then I went back with my happy life.

Just log off psn, load the game and if you want to go online select multiplayer from the phone.

I had freezing a problem when loading a save at about 15% through the game. Restarted the PS3, signed off of PSN and restarted game. Haven't had any problems since and I'm now 40% through the game.

An you can still join multiplayer during the game. It will ask you to sign in.

So it seems that one fix is to make sure you're signed out before you start the game each time.

All I have to do is sign out of PSN and then in-game, pull up the cell phone, click multiplayer, and sign back into PSN.

The 360 is also having problems. Just not as much as the 360. Also, GTA4 can run on 1080p/i on the PS3. Its just if you try to run it at 720p, it would go to 630p.

Every time i connect, it joins the game screen, and every time the game is about to start it kicks me out saying, lost connection. must have tried more than 50 times :(
