Pure Nintendo: "As a child, alongside the Sonic titles, one of the games I spent longest with was Ecco the Dolphin, an unusual underwater adventure from Sega where players didn’t control a Hedgehog with attitude, but instead a Bottlenose Dolphin. Some fifteen years later and my experiences with Ecco are a distant memory, an “echo” of my childhood. So naturally, when I heard that Ecco the Dolphin was one of the titles receiving a 3D upgrade in Sega’s 3D Classics for the Nintendo 3DS, I was extremely eager to relive those gaming experiences I had what seems like so long ago."
"Sega has been re-releasing some of their classics like Space Harrier and Ecco the Dolphin for Nintendo 3DS with added and whistles. The 3D Ages titles have been upgraded with stereoscopic 3D visuals and occasionally gyroscopic control that let players simulate sitting in an arcade cabinet. All of these enhanced 3D Classics are available on the eShop and Sinobi reports six of them will be bundled onto a cartridge inJapan.
Sega 3D Reprint Archives includes Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone OpaOpa Brothers, Outrun, Streets of Rage, Shinobi III, and Ecco the Dolphin for 3,980 yen, which is about the same price as buying all six games separately. The compilation is slated for release on December 18."
Nintendo Insider writes:
It’s the stereoscopic 3D effect that truly makes this an exciting experience however, breathing new life into Ecco’s aquatic world. Whereas the game’s soothing soundtrack, for which creator Ed Annunziata turned to Pink Floyd for inspiration no less, brings an eerie calm to what still remains an entirely mesmerising and unforgettable experience.
Ecco the Dolphin has always been something of an oddity. At the time of release, the Mega Drive / Genesis platform was defined by its solid arcade ports and action-packed titles such as Golden Axe and Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, so when a dolphin-based adventure came along it was a totally original concept for players to take on board.
