Ha, Xbox One TV Ads Featuring Voice Commands Are Interacting With Consoles

Microsoft has trumpeted the voice control capability of the Xbox One as it allows you to interact extensively with the console. With voice commands, you can do many things such as recording a short clip of your gameplay and saving it to the cloud by saying “Xbox, record that”. Another of the rather nifty commands is the ability to turn on your console by saying “Xbox On”. But it seems there is a bit of a snag with this feature - and a rather amusing one, at that - because when Microsoft airs a commercial that says ‘Xbox On’, the ad is apparently turning on consoles in some consumers' homes.

So much for recognizing "you".

Surprised there haven't been stories about the snap feature causing command issues.

Regis4222d ago (Edited 4222d ago )

I was at my friend's house and he started playing DR3 and I shout Xbox off and it froze his game and brought up the command prompt of yes or no. That's bad.

@Death but at the start up menu it asked my friend if he wanted to turn off the kinect and he did however I still said it.

Gr1mmyshadows4222d ago

that weird cause everytime I yell xbox off nothing ever comes up to confirm and my xbox just stays on as if it never heard me

Regis4222d ago

@TRD4L1fe

It may be missing the prompt program, I don't know not every machine is perfect.

BX814222d ago

@TRD try redoing the settings on the kinect. I have no problems with mine as of now.

Robdeagle4222d ago

The command is "xbox turn off"

UltimateMaster4222d ago

This is where voice commands can become problematic. When you live with someone else who will mess around with your Xbox One.

SITH4221d ago

Fail. The command is Xbox turn off.

SilentNegotiator4221d ago (Edited 4221d ago )

It doesn't recognize your voice, it doesn't remember your face after a haircut...what DOES Kinect do to identify you?

Harmy6664221d ago

Hmm, that's strange because the command is "Xbox, Turn Off"

Try harder next time please.

Regis4221d ago

At everyone who thinks I'm trolling I'm not. Its what I said and the command prompt came up wanting conformation to turn off that's it.

That's the bitch about microphones, they can't see. When the console is in standby mode, the mic is actively listening for "Xbox on". When it hears that, it powers on the console and the camera part of Kinect. When the camera sees you, then it will automatically sign you in. Contrary to what many choose to believe, the camera isn't always watching you, otherwise it would have the ability to recognize "you" and not rely on an audible command.

@Regis, it can also be turned off if you think people randomly saying "Xbox turn off" is going to be a problem.

Utalkin2me4222d ago

@Death
" Contrary to what many choose to believe, the camera isn't always watching you, otherwise it would have the ability to recognize "you" and not rely on an audible command. "

Well i am sure that would be to obvious to automatically recognize you when you walk in the room, they couldn't make it that obvious. If the camera has power then it can watch and listen anyway it wants, contrary to what you believe.

Death4222d ago

Who is "they"? You honestly think they disable camera recognition in the low power standby mode as a cover to a greater conspiracy to catch me in my Spider-man underoos?

Rainstorm814221d ago

Its always scanning for something....I was watching a live stream on ps4 of someone playing Ryse off screen....you could see kinect flashing or scannning, it not visible to the naked eye but it showed up on camera

ShinMaster4221d ago

Kinect is always working in the background.
That's why it leeches 10% Xbox One's performance.

"So much for recognizing "you"."

Oh god, lol. So much for opening with a joke! You're waaaaay too emotionally invested in this.

I feel like this is supposed to be funny. Not something to get all peeved about. PS4 is out, Xbox is out, isn't it about time to lighten up?

=)

pyramidshead4222d ago

"*Your experience may differ"

OrangePowerz4222d ago

What happend to "it will only listen to you"?

Bigpappy4222d ago

That is after you turn it on with Kinect. Kinect camera decides for who is speaking not the mic.

FragMnTagM4222d ago (Edited 4222d ago )

I remember reading about it looking for lip movement.

BX814222d ago

I disagree. My kinect will sign me in by recognition but if my wife says Xbox off it'll ask if I wanna turn it off.

G20WLY4221d ago

Also, amazingly, it will sign you in on sight*!

*Disclaimer, as long as you don't have a haircut, insert hair extensions, wear your hair differently from normal, grow a beard, shave a beard, wear glasses, get a tan or develop a spot.

I kid, of course ;P

Transporter474222d ago

I wonder if you have it plugged in and you are watching tv and that comes on would that work?

ziggurcat4222d ago

insomniac had an office-wide prank where someone (i believe) would say "xbox off" over the PA system, and shut people's consoles down hahaha

n4rc4222d ago

Ya.. But that's an outside source ie not coming thru the TV speakers

I've tried that myself... A buddy can command my console over speakerphone.. But not over Skype or party chat etc

I hope it's a remake of the 1st game. But it's probably just the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2

OtterX16h ago

I hope a PS5 upgrade launches on the same day as announcement & it costs no more than $10. I already bought the Ultimate Edition once, they got good money from me.

I stopped playing completely 2 years ago until they did 60fps. I really didn't expect it would take this long & I didn't want to start completely over on PC.

dmonee5h ago

My wish is that its optimized for current gen machines, with some sort of story expansion. Undead nightmare 2! My 2nd wish is that it just shadow drops on the day of the announcement!.

Lionsguard4h ago

Give me my RDR2 Undead Nightmare already.

yeh i can see that.

bk then, nintendo was rly successful with the wii, and they just did their own thing.

now nintendo is a juggernaut when it comes to first party games ; selling in the 10s of mio.

hiawa2310h ago

Good interview. I mean I see Nintendo in their own lane.

Kneetos9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Not sure how he came to that conclusion of Japan
PlayStation has been in decline since the PS2
Aside from the Wii U Nintendo pretty much outpaced Sony in Japan, and not by a small margin

goken5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Huh?
Saying playstation is in decline since PS2 is like saying Call of Duty has been in decline since black ops 3… the point is COD is still selling gang busters everywhere every year

Nintendo undoubtedly doing better than PS in Japan owes at least in part to Japan’s preference towards handheld gaming.

ZeekQuattro5h ago

The PS3 was actually the start of Sony's hardware decline in Japan. It's only gotten worse since then for Sony.
