The Sony PlayStation is home to a lot of classic JRPG’s. One of my favorites was Squaresoft’s release, Chrono Cross. Known as the spiritual sequel to Chrono Trigger, the game delivered on all fronts. Chrono Cross’s gameplay follows the JRPG formula we’ve all grown to love.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition owes its existence to the fact that the devs at Square Enix were afraid that the original version of the classic Japanese RPG was about to become "unplayable."
I don't know why they were worried. Emulation has ensured the game (and every other PS1 game for that matter) will live on forever. Maybe they're so out of touch they aren't even aware emulators are a thing.
So many games are way more "unplayable" than Chrono Cross, which at least had a rerelease as a PS1 Classic on PS3.
Why wasn’t Chrono Trigger included in this?
This should’ve been a celebration of the entire Chrono series
A third Chrono series game called Chrono Break was planned, but Square prioritized an MMORPG, and Chrono Break’s concepts were used in mobile games.
Kinda misleading title, even from reading the article itself.
The staff and management couldn’t come to an agreement and the team moved on. Part of the team went to creat ff11 and the rest to Monolith software. Ideas for this game were implemented in some form to mobile games-later on. Which make sense as early 2000s mobile phones were not as powerful.
Chrono Cross’ massive 45-member ensemble cast has been a hot topic since the game's release in 1999, with many arguing that it was too much of an expansion on Chrono Trigger's compact group of seven heroes. But as imperfect as Cross might have been, its large cast was fitting for the story it wanted to say, and helped it achieve a scope that was really kind of profound.
Chrono cross was good injust wouldn't put it up there. I despised the leveling system.
This is the golden age of Jrpgs people. too bad Square don't make games like this anymore.
easily one of the best JRPG games ever made.
It's a shame it's not available in Europe. I'd love to play the game on my Vita. I wish SE put it out on PSN in EU even if only as a "PS One Import" title like other companies have done.
This game still is one of the best JRPG's ever. Like ritsuka commented Square does not make them like this anymore. Too bad. There was a time when playing RPG's was a joy, but today it's not that time.
Epic game.
