Retro Review: Shadow of the Colossus

Nowadays, the amount of artistry and minimalism injected into video games is at an all-time high. If we were to look back to two short decades ago, we would notice that the peak of video games’ artistic creativity lay with the smiley faces plastered on every cloud in the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Luckily, since then we’ve played games like Journey and Limbo. With their lack of dialogue, simple control schemes, and emphasis on atmosphere, they are the Lex Luthor to Call of Duty’s Superman. Or vice-versa; whatever floats your boat.

Those games, however, were not the first to put more effort on mood than gameplay. Team Ico was known for that very thing, years earlier. First with Ico in 2001 and then Shadow of the Colossus four years later, they proved that less can indeed be much more. Their subtle yet highly emotional take on storytelling truly laid the groundwork for gaming as we know it today – or at the very least, indie gaming as we know it.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

Wayyy to many games to list but the first 3 that popped in my head.
1.Okami
2.ESPN NFL 2K5
3.GTA San Andreas

DarXyde205d ago

Good list, but I would replace Onimusha with a Onimusha 2.

Amplitude205d ago

Amplitude still holds up brilliantly

Agent75204d ago

I'd say Onimisha 2 and Turismo 4 was better. Maximo, Auto Modellista, Shox, Wipeout Fusion and pulse, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution to name a few.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic210d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23210d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1210d ago (Edited 210d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger201d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.
