What is the benefit to have different users logged in at the same time on the same console? :3

CustardTrout4293d ago

On the 360 you can split screen online which can be really fun; assume it'll be the same kind of idea

abzdine4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

@NightmareLuffy:
you can play multiplayer online game with a friend on the same console. No need to have up to 4 consoles and split the network to 4 if you're sitting together. That's at least how i understand it.

0ut1awed4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

The only problem is that most games are not supporting online splitscreen as time goes on. I can only imagine that will continue more so into next gen.

There will defiantly be games that have it but we will see how usefull this really is.

MazzingerZ4293d ago

You can do that on PS3 as well(co-op local sing in for instance Warhawk and LBP, I think Resistance 2 co-op allowed that as well, those the ones I recall right now...Trophies can't be earned by anyone but main account, though...it seems to be possible now on PS4

devwan4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

On ps3 it was the game title that allowed it, on ps4 it's a system feature across the board.

NukaCola4293d ago

Mazz

Every one earns trophies for LBP. Glad they added this. Will make Borderlands 3 better so my wife can earn trophies for her own account.

MazzingerZ4293d ago

@NukaCola
Ahhh nice! Didn't know that one, I guess when I played with my family had gotten most of those trophies
Thanks for the info!

mewhy324293d ago

This will be great. I do this now on Xbox360 with my kids and we have a blast. Now that we're moving to PS4 I'm glad to see that we'll be able to do the same. Just another example of Sony listening to the gamer.

SilentNegotiator4293d ago

They had better still allow "guests" in online play.

It would be BS if you were forced to use two paid accounts for splittscreen online multiplayer.

blennerville4293d ago

"On the 360 you can split screen online which can be really fun; assume it'll be the same kind of idea"

you can do that on PS3 in Uncharted 3.

my guess is its for remote play and stuff.

dragon824293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

@SilentNegotiator

They have said that only one account on the system needs to have PS+ and the rest of the accounts on that system will also be covered.

I believe the Xbox One is moving towards this system too.

BISHOP-BRASIL4293d ago

@Out1awed

Hopefully it can become more common now that both consoles are readily able to do it. I mean, PS3 could do that, but it was up to devs to implement it, now as long as it's a game that support local multiplayer, multiple sign-in should be a given.

miyamoto4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

nice.

XB1_PS44293d ago

I had no clue that this wasn't all ready a thing on PSN.

badz1494293d ago

Great feature especially for local coop and all 4 can get trophies

BallsEye4292d ago

@0ut1awed

Most of XO ms exclusives offer split screen campaigns etc...halo series offer 4 players split screen. Also many people logged into 1 console even in the dash have it's benefits. On 360 anyone logged in can switch to his/her own dashboard in a second and check friends list and so on. I have accounts for UK, US, Germany and Japan. Different stuff in dashboard, often different free games etc.

360ICE4292d ago

You can do that on PS3 too, but only in certain games (Starhawk, Resistance 2). I'm hoping for a more universal support this time around. Collecting trophies at a friend's house would be neat.

+ Show (14) more repliesLast reply 4292d ago
Dark_Eternal4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

Presumably multiple users can also earn trophies that way, instead of just one person.

Boody-Bandit4293d ago

+well said

This is a much needed option. My son and I go head to head a lot in fighters and sports games. It sucked that only one of us could unlock trophies while doing so. This is great news.

listenkids4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

Let's hope so, many times I've missed out playing split screen games and the multiple account sign in for black ops 2 didn't award trophies :(

yellowgerbil4293d ago

My brother in law has a 360. Together we went into online games on CoD black ops 2 with me on a second account.
So there is a benefit, though nothing that is a game changer. Just another sign that sony is out to make the console as pro gamer as possible.

Hufandpuf4293d ago

Or as up to date as possible.

saber000054293d ago

@NightmareLuffy,

With-in each other's profile account is your friends list. I'm sure if, if you have a sibling or someone else that is sharing your PS4, you wouldn't want to be receiving messages from people you don't even know. I know I wouldn't XD

Also, your profile holds your game data (Gamer name, share streams, etc). So, that's a playstation plus..... See what I did there? ;)

TimeSkipLuffy4293d ago

but if 4 users are logged in into one console wouldn't you receive messages from all four on that console? :D

I see the benefit of multiplayer if the game support online multiplayer splitscreen and owning own trophies on local multiplayer games.

MasterCornholio4293d ago

Multiplayer achievements.

Nexus 7 2013

Bundi4293d ago

When playing a multiplayer game, trophies can now be earned by any of the 2/4 players and not just the main profile.
Also for games like Fifa, it is nice to have controller settings already assigned to your preferences rather than having to make due with the primary profile settings or change them each time.

This is something that puzzled with the ps3, why did they limit it to just one profile per session when up to 7 people could play at the same time?

Welcome to 2005 Sony, glad you finally made it.

joeyisback4293d ago

Microsoft where was the blue ray player in the Xbox 360 welcome to 2006 Microsoft

Bundi4293d ago

That's why Microsoft aren't shouting it from the roof tops that they now have blu-ray, it's not something to write home about in 2013.

Being able to sign in multiple profiles is further perplexing because unlike blu-ray it isn't a hardware limitation. How they went an entire gen without catching up is a crime.

Kryptix4293d ago

That was because the XMB's base structure due to foreseeing RAM limitations wasn't designed to let multiple players sign in on their own profiles. But the work around was that in certain games like most notably Little Big Planet, they designed the in-game code to give the console the ability to do so.

The PS3 always had the ability to allow multiple accounts, it was just up to developer to add the feature in the game. So I'm glad now it's a feature that comes built with the console so developers can take full advantage of it adding splitscreen online and offline.

And what you mean with the last part; "Welcome to 2005 Sony, glad you finally made it."? You act like the Xbox 360 was more up to date than the PS3. Hmmmm, from what what I remember, the 360 in the beginning had no HDMI output, no wifi, controllers use disposable batteries, and no blu-ray. And with the new Xbox One, no removable hard drive and controllers still use disposable batteries. Honestly, the PS3 went with the times much better and we still use the new blu ray format after all that.

edgeofsins4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

We get it. You don't like Sony. Quit your complaining.

You're embarrassing.

You're one of the people that think Knack is last gen just because of it's art style after all.

Is something wrong with Sony one upping XBox all the time? Be mad at Microsoft. They have the assets and money. They just don't care. They don't understand you or other gamers. They only know casual and "hardcore"(To them any game with violence). Sony has both, variations of both, in between that, a mix of the two, everything right out of the gate with many coming later in 2014, much of which all they had to do was contact developers and offer free dev kits. Microsoft just shunned the industry, the consumers, and that resulted in shunning themselves. If you want to support some of the biggest ignorance of the industry with your own ignorance go ahead.

I don't find the brand bad, just the company.

Edit: And like Kryptix said. The console wasn't designed around it originally. They aren't compromising the biggest feature, gaming, by changing it around with an update that could affect its performance. That is why some games like Starhawk had in game music. It limits the developers freedom and gamers might get less because of it.

tiffac0084293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

Well we can clearly see the strength of MS when it comes to software programming and Sony when it comes to hardware manufacturing. This generation showed that to us.

What's important is that the weaknesses of the 360 and PS3 is now being tackled with the X1 and PS4.

SmoothC9114293d ago

@Bundi

Who the f was 'shouting it from the rooftops'? This article just stated a response to a question; there was no press release or major announcement

neoMAXMLC4293d ago

No, instead they're shouting from the rooftops that you can play games without being connected online. :P

kenshiro1004293d ago

So the different users could each earn trophies while playing Split Multiplayer. That would be my 1st reason

Sarick4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

Woah, my guess so you can have three others get TROPHIES while playing a multi-player game. On PS3 the only player who gets credit is the user who is active online.

Am I right?

Jazz41084293d ago

Wasnt trophies added after ms was successfull with achievements? They both copy one another is my point.

trenso14293d ago

in LBP you could sign in with multiple ids so whatever they earned while not playing on their account would be unlocked when they singed in.

ZBlacktt4293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

Trophy boosting/player boosting.

GraveLord4293d ago

4-player local multiplayer in Call of Duty or any sports game I imagine.

say you want to play split screen when yur boy is over, he can log into his account on yur ps4 with you and you can both level up on yur own accounts same with diablo 3

ion534293d ago

FarCry3 had the same feature for split screen co-op

abusador4293d ago

Wayyyyy before Farcry three this was done by Sonys first party studios such as resistance 2, uncharted 3, etc...... Once again Sony was the first to have this feature and ppl try to give credit elsewhere lol

StoutBEER4293d ago

PS3 didn't have this capability? That sucks. Glad they are changing that. Nothin like sittin around witha few friends on a lazy sunday dickin about in Halo customs. :3

BoriboyShoGUN4293d ago

@ Abusador, While I am a Playstation Fan you sir are wrong the 360 had this at launch! I always wondered how the PS3 didnt have it but wasnt too concerned since I was the only one logging in on the PS3 anyways. But seeing from some of the post I guess it was up too individual developers on the PS3 to make it happen! I guess I just never noticed!!

iPad4293d ago

Hopefully on PS4, you don't need to quit the game and head back to the XMB just to switch accounts.

I loved that about Xbox LIVE. You can switch accounts in-game.

mickaelmc4293d ago

Lots of benefits. Leveling up, personal loadouts, trophies, infinite record keeping stats, lots.

MuhammadJA4293d ago

So Sony can brag later that she has more online users! XD

hellzsupernova4293d ago

This for me was the biggest misstep of the ps3
With the trophy system some games wouldn't let you sign in and you didn't get trophies with your buddies. Sure a few games let you eventually but it was always a let down

ziggurcat4293d ago

say, in littlebigplanet, you could have 4 different profiles playing MP instead of one profile plus 3 guests. each person playing could earn their own trophies that way as well.

pixelsword4292d ago

@ zigg;

Sorry, I didn't see this particular post when I made my comment answering Nightmare, or else I would have merely agreed with yours.

Sarick4293d ago

This is new to me. Please explain how multiple players can log on PSN using a single PS3 at the same time. I'm very interested in knowing how to do this.

I'd like to play a few multi-player Tales of games and have partners win trophies with me.

awesomeperson4293d ago

I think he misunderstands the premise of what this does.

I think towelie is referring to the profiles you can select (at the left of the XMB), each tied to another account. Which is, of course, different to signing on with 1-4 accounts on a single profile.

dragon824293d ago

LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2
Warhawk
Resistance 2
Borderlands 2

These are a few games that allowed you to log in with multiple accounts that the same time on PS3. It was up to the developer to program the feature into the game itself.

Bundi4293d ago

Nope. Not even close. One profile per session. You have to log out to use other profiles. Annoying when playing offline multiplayer games.

Mikefizzled4293d ago

Nothing new 360 had this from launch and I'm would of thought that PS3 did something similar. Hell the One can have 8 controllers connected at once which would take sports games to ridiculous levels of complexity.

bahabeast4293d ago

360 did it but you all needed live gold on the ps3 we can play with all those peeps from one free online play profile soo IMO ps3 still wins.

Mikefizzled4293d ago

So by your logic PS3 > Ps4 & Xbox One as you don't need to pay for multiplayer on PS3

LogicStomper4293d ago

Nope, Halo has always allowed guests of a profile to play online in conjunction with the account-holder.

dragon824293d ago

@Mikefizzled

The difference is that the PS4 and XB1 only require a single account to pay for online and the other sub accounts are covered free of charge.

360 required "each" account to pay for Gold in order to play online in split screen.

PS3 allows multiple accounts to be signed in at the same time for free across the board. The only difference is it was left up to the developers to include the feature in their games.

mickaelmc4293d ago ShowReplies(1)
awesomeperson4293d ago

Not meaning to diminish your hopes, but the PS3 could have up to 7 I think controllers connected at once. Very few games took advantage of it, and although some people might have, I never heard anyone actually using the feature.

It would be nice for sport-game-parties or the like, but it's a feature you soon forget about.

I wonder how the USA tariffs war will affect that projection. 🤔

S2Killinit37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

I think they take that into consideration when they announce their projections. Currently, after the xbox price increase, the PRO is cheaper than the series x! That is ridiculous, and it can’t last.

darthv7237d ago

you keep saying that but the price of a PS5 Pro is S699.99 (US) and the price of a Series X is $599.99 (US)

S2Killinit37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

The series x with 2 TB storage space is more expensive than PS5 PRO which also has 2 TB storage space.

darthv7237d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Oh so you are pitting a regular Pro with a special edition X... got it. If you are going so far as trying to compare apples to apples... please add in the optical drive and stand to the Pro. Seeing as the X has both of those by default.

I will help you if you are unable to do so.
PS5 Pro 2tb: $699.99, Optical Drive: $79.99, Stand: $29.99 = $809.97
Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition 2TB: $729.99

37d ago
S2Killinit36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

The PS5 PRO has 2TB storage. The series X with 2TB storage and much weaker, is… more expensive! So yeah, Im pointing out that fact.

Also, the PRO does not require a stand.

Ps: regular series 2TB is $749 (where did u get 729?)

darthv7236d ago

Its right here on the official XB site: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

Okay, so no stand for the Pro, but you might still want the optical drive. So $779.98 vs $729.99. A properly outfitted Pro is still more $$ than a 2tb X.

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Do I need to mention that the series x is not nearly as powerful as the PS5 PRO?

And no, the PS5 PRO runs just fine without a drive, and people don’t have to buy the drive right away, assuming they want it.

Because that's where the real money is made, in microtransactions.

The less time spent playing the less likely you are to spend more money on games and services including subs or even the next console.

Increased engagement equals more money.

Same reason Microsoft does it: it looks better to investors and it's a solution when unit sales slow down.

S2Killinit37d ago

Gamepass is already at 20$ per month if im not mistaken.

toxic-inferno37d ago

@neutralgamer1992

Not all of us. I'm a big PlayStation fan, and have been since the PSOne. But I can't begin to defend what's happening currently.

At least Nintendo release a large number of games from their major franchises. Sony is just not banking on their established franchises, and yet are raising prices. Not great.

S2Killinit37d ago

Im pretty sure we are going to see a price increase for PRO. I mean think about it, its currently cheaper than xbox series x! That cannot last.

Eonjay37d ago

I'm absolutely sure we will not see a price increase. I don't think we should 'expect' to see price increase because it just adds validity to what Nintendo and Microsoft have done.

darthv7236d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Sorry to pop that bubble but the Pro is not cheaper than a series x... generally speaking (like you are). It is cheaper than one specific version, and doing so by not including the optical drive and stand like the X has by default.

So keep on trying to convince people you are right when everyone knows it's quite the opposite. A stock Pro is $699.99 and a stock X is $599.99. A special edition galactic black 2tb X is $729.99. And if you really want to compare apples to apples... adding the aforementioned optical drive and stand brings that Pro to $809.97 and then they would be on equal footing.

Twisting truths to fit a narrative... I expect better from you S2.

S2Killinit36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

The PS5 PRO has 2TB storage. And the series X with 2TB is more expensive. Which in my opinion is insane conseidering how much more powerful the PRO is. The PS5PRO does not need a stand, it can be used without a stand.

TheKingKratos37d ago

So the Pro is not offering any push in sales at all ?

CrashMania37d ago

It's still an expensive, niche product ultimately. And they exceeded their sales projections for units sold by half a million.

lawox37d ago

"18.5 million units have been shipped during the full fiscal year. This is actually ahead of the 18 million units target set by the company."

They beat their yearly estimate. It's not broken down by device, but it's clearly performing well enough. Since it's been released it's consistently been the second best selling SKU on Amazon only after the the Slim with disc.

37d ago
Bathyj37d ago

18 million a year is in the toilet?
I remember when 10 was considered good
Hell Microsoft would take that right now.

37d ago
BeHunted37d ago

If their profits fall next quarter, we'll probably see more price hikes. I can't imagine having to pay £20 a month for PlayStation Plus.

S2Killinit37d ago

I think gamepass is already paying that much.

37d ago
drivxr37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Decline in hardware sales.
Behind on lifetime sales and decline in first party sales.
Third party content and PSN came through to save the day.
Things will improve starting with the next Ghost game.

Hopefully a steady flow of first party content by end of '25

rlow137d ago (Edited 37d ago )

I guess you get downvoted for stating facts from Sony’s own lips. What I’m curious about is what their top games of the year were and how much Xbox games contributed to the increase?

CrashMania37d ago

Well, generally 3rd party publisher games contribute the most anyway, so no different to capcom, EA and so on contributing to this figure.

lawox37d ago

That's because the report is actually really good.

They beat the console sales estimate that they set last year March, they have increased users both due to the record numbers of PS4 users and strong PS5 sales which is leading to great profits in sales and user spend.

This report is about the financial health of the PlayStation brand and as a platform PlayStation is stronger than ever. Heck they even have Microsoft putting their biggest franchises on the platform.

37d ago
S2Killinit36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Well, the facts in the article are positive. Nothing wrong with his comment, but in my opinion it doesn't correctly indicate all the facts and nuances that give context to the reality of things. I downvoted for that only.

Make sense?

Lightning7737d ago

This is exactly what happened to Xbox year's ago. They had no first party and started seeing decline in 1st party sales, which effected their third party games which eventually effected their console sales. A slow decline across the board.

Calm down PS fans I'm not saying PS is becoming like old Xbox. I'm showing examples of the importance of first party output. Look how Xbox finally has compelling first party and things are on a up swing(despite years going on a downswing). I know thanks to PS releases which helps a ton, (which is why Xbox hardware only dropped 6% instead of 30+% like it usually does) The point still stands despite what Genz Trends may go, first party and compelling games sell hardware and software still. Sony's financial quarter is an example of this, of what lower First party output looks like.

No matter they'll be right back on track in due time any time especially with DS2 (not my type of game but I know many like it) and Yotei. They're not Xbox and let things get bad for so many years on end.

crazyCoconuts37d ago

"I'm showing examples of the importance of first party output. "
First party is mostly relevant for the sole purpose of creating EXCLUSIVES that are needed to stay competitive. With Xbox consoles collapsing and no more Xbox exclusives, first party is way less important. PlayStation as a platform now has free reign to profit without the high expense of needing exclusive first party titles.

red2tango37d ago

Sony has been very lazy with 1st party games compared to the PS4 era. And even the PS4 era was nothing compared to the PS3 era in terms of games.

S2Killinit36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

We have Ghost and Intergalactic coming. And then Marathon which is not exclusive to PlayStation. I think Covid and that chip shortage put a speedbump in game development because game manufacturers dont want even more risk that their game will arrive to too little hardware, but the games are starting to show up.

Lightning7737d ago

"With Xbox consoles collapsing and no more Xbox exclusives, first party is way less important."

Absolutely not. If that was the case then Nintendo would put Mario on Sega Genesis and Sonic on Super Nintendo. I know things are way different 30+ years later but not much has really changed in terms of exclusives and their impact on hardware. Especially early in the console life cycle.

Sony made all the money this quarter handover fist. Profits isn't a issue for them right now. I was just saying lower hardware sales and lower first party sales will hurt them or any console manufacturer of they don't have the compelling games in the long run. Just like it hurt Xbox. IF Sony keeps up not having lower first part output. Which we know they're not.

crazyCoconuts37d ago

Well no big exclusives in the last two years yet PS is doing great. What are people gonna do? Buy an Xbox?

S2Killinit36d ago

I agree with you. But they have had plenty of exclusives so far. Has it been ideal? Nope. I have a feeling we are seeing a resurgence with the effects of covid and that chip shortage now behind us.

Lightning7737d ago

No it's just like 360 where they had no games yet ppl still bought it because they sold ppl on the games early on that gen the fans were locked in and invested. They were riding the good will and was dubbed the shooter, racer box. The games dried up and they never recovered from it which hurt them in the long run. Same here with PS they still make the big bucks because they had games early on and the fans locked in and will continue to lock in for a little while longer despite lacking in first party.

I agree. But the problem with xbox was that for some crazy reason MS thought game development wasnt all that important to a platform holder. They literally did not fund games with their own studios. When they lost marketshare they couldnt justify paying for exclusives with large install bases making it too expensive. That is not the scenario with PlayStation.

Perfectly in line to reach 100 million by March 2026.

Profchaos37d ago

Theys have to clear 22.2 million to do this.
When you average out the current number over 5 years it's unlikely.

If the console was going down in price it would be possible but they have not been able to reduce the cost in fact it's gone up so this is working against them.

gta Vi has also been pushed out of the financial year and there's likely millions of GTA v players still on ps5 that have not made the jump those players would for GTA vi

The overall poor market conditions and uncertainty doesn't fill me with confidence trade war, weak yen and the ongoing cost of living crisis. We're not talking core gamers picking up a new system were talking gamers who wait for the back 9 to enter a new generation.

I think 2027 they will but 100 not this year.

They will reach 100 million during 2026.

It might actually get a boost considering that even the PS5 PRO is currently cheaper than the series x. This will of course be over soon as Im expecting a price hike for the PRO.

I know Sony said they are considering raising prices.. Well as of yesterday China and the US lifted their tariffs standoff. At least for 90 days until they can agree on a trade deal that would benefit both parties. So with manufacturing in China and shipping them to the US I’m hoping it will not affect the prices.

Although I kind of doubt Sony will top 100 million since GTA 6 will be releasing next year by March. Could be wrong and I’ll be glad to be.

Xbox shooting itself in the foot or more like nailing their own coffin with rising prices. Hopefully Sony will stay put.. Ghost of Yotei is releasing for $70 still so that’s a god sign hopefully.

Is this a good thing for someone with no shares in Sony stock?

italiangamer37d ago

More PS5 on the market = higher chance of getting even more games.
It's not rocket science.

very nice.
in almost 5 years too.
some big hitters are yet to come

badz14937d ago (Edited 37d ago )

come on...don't say that! that slogan "Greatness Awaits" is haunting me everytime someone says this and yeah...1st party output has not been a highlight this gen which is a huge bummer! personally, I would rate their 1st party output this gen 4/10!

gold_drake36d ago

to be honest, when i typed it out, it did sound like a slogan for that ha
