So guessing with this game they're going to listen to fan instead of trying to "appeal to a broader audience" but doesn't that just invite diminishing returns? The inevitable backlash when they stop listening and try to increase their audience?

Not really. The only people that really care about shifting mechanics are the original audience. People who are new to the series don't care at all because, not having played the earlier games, they have no frame of reference--whether it's true to what the fans want or not has no relevance.

This is why it's always a good idea to listen to your core consumers. They're the ones who will increase sales of a good game by applauding it; they're the ones who will decrease sales of a bad game by condemning it.

Bravely Second: live playthrough of Bravely Default on Friday (April 17th)

Bravely Second: End Layer comes out in less than two weeks in Japan, and to celebrate, Dengeki Online is going to have a special livestream on Friday. It will be a live playthrough of Bravely Default: For the Sequel (the augmented version of Bravely Defaut, the same one that was released in Europe and North America).

However, please note that this is going to be quite the lengthy livestream, as the Dengeki Online staff is planning to play until the end, and the True Ending. Therefore, it will be a real spoiler fest if you haven’t played the game: you have been warned! If you’ve already played Bravely Default, this will be a nice refresher course before Bravely Second: End Layer comes out on April 23rd in Japan.
