Almost 5 years ago Silent Hill Homecoming was released in USA market. After this time and practicaly at the end of the current generation of consoles, it is a game that deserves a second review because, like the good wines, Homecoming is much better right now than in 2008.
The sirens are sounding again, beckoning you back to the foggy ghost town as we rank all the Silent Hill games, from the chilling classics to the misguided missteps.
I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.
Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.
silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.
for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.
No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.
Twinfinite: "They said it couldn't be done, be we've tried our best to rank all the monsters in Silent Hill according to their fear factor. Let's go!"
Pyramid Head is my #1 too, despite the fact you don't actually fight him much - and the few times you do are actually super easy. It's all in the presentation & close encounters.
I never thought the monsters themselves were very scary. It was the tension and the unknown, the silent moments that got under your skin that were the most scary to me.
Silent Hill has always been about the psychological horror more than it's gore.
Daily Video Game writes: "Xbox Store has just launched three new digital sales that offers steep discounts on various combat, family, and free to play games for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, including many Xbox 360 games right now!"
I had no idea Binary Domain was backwards compatible. I know what I'm downloading.
I would like El Shaddi, Afterburner Climax, and outrun 2 please. I am sure that there are other games as well but those came to mind for me right now.
None of these ever made it to Japan.
Homecoming, Downpour (?).
It's like Konami was ashamed of them.
I'd still like to play them though..
I played it and finished it without spoilers, I was pleased with it. Personally the story was fine to me, although fighting the humans was out of place I thought.
The first time you see Otherworld change was pretty neat as well.
SH: Homecoming had great monster and boss designs, while SH: Downpour had awesome sidequests that surprisingly fit well in the game. SH: Downpour also did well with the map and town exploration.
If only these elements can be merged together in a new SH title, we can have a better SH title in our hands.
I hope Konami really goes back to the series and research more on the elements that made the first three titles good survival horror games.
PS: SH: Downpour also sported a great story that's open for interpretation. Too bad the game was blasted for its atrocious lag and long load times.
This game is AWFUL. The more subtle aspects of the psychological horror from the first 4 games feels abandoned for a more streamlined and simplified telling of a fairly predictable story, the game has two colors (grey and rust) which tend to feel flat or dull instead of scary, the weapons become increasingly less useful since the knife you start out with is the best weapon in the game, the game takes aspects of the not quite stellar SH movie instead of taking inspiration from the magnificent games before it and might as well have helped start the whole 'horror games are better if they're made into action combat games' craze that has helped ruin so many once great franchises. Downpour is and improvement over homecoming but in the same sense that a turd with sprinkles on it is an improvement. If you care at all about SH or you've never played a SH game STAY AWAY FROM THESE 'THINGS'! Play the first 4 games and marvel at how even today they are disturbing, well written/ designed and ultimately better than most horror games today.
Shattered Memories is my favorite out of the last several SH games. That ending cracked my mind just like 2 did.
