NFS Rivals dev asks: ‘Titanfall and Battlefield 4 look good, but how does next-gen change gameplay?’

The “graphics vs gameplay” debate is as old as time, and it still rages on today with the upcoming releases of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 reigniting the old-fashioned “console wars” and spec battles between hardware fanboys.

But everyone knows that a game’s visual achievements mean diddly-squat if the game isn’t very enjoyable.

Such a sentiment is shared by Need for Speed: Rivals executive producer Marcus Nilsson, who questioned the next generation of console’s capacity to change how we play and interact with games.

NFS looks like a current gen game sorry

sincitysir14301d ago

Although i agree with u I still agree with his question! I means games still look fun but I don't think they're changing in any radical way! But then again maybe they will get bigger and more complicated and more real which might change gameplay all together. Really interesting *scratches chin

dantesparda4301d ago

I don't know what the hell people expect but seriously what can you do to game play to make it better, seriously?

GuyThatPlaysGames4301d ago

The gameplay of games has not evolved for a good while now. I don't care how shiny a car is or how much sweat is dripping off a player's head. I just want some fun, addicting gameplay. As far as revolutionary, I haven't seen any at all.

Retroman4301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

"BUT EVERYONE KNOW THAT A GAME VISUAL DONT MEAN DIDDY-SQUAT IF THE GAME NOT ENJOYABLE"

criterion games should know that FIRST hand "hotpursuit"
"mostwanted" poor image of NFS.....now we getting
all drive for what?? i seriously hope next NFS will be street racing, circuit tracks, drag racing, sprint racing.
instead of online joining in the game how about 2 player NFS as hotpursuit 2 was.

Kingscorpion19814301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

Its funny he said that.... I was just thinking about GTA 5 and it looks like a next gen game and probably will play like a next gen game and its only on the XBOX 360 and PS3.

JP13694301d ago

I'm sure it will be a fantastic game, but it doesn't look next gen. The world Rockstar have created is incredible and will probably be unmatched for some time, but they're still limited by very old technology. I'm hoping they port to PS4 and X1 so I can play at full HD with a better, more stable framerate.

Kingscorpion19814298d ago

Did you play Last of Us??? Did you think that looked next gen?

donjunedolo4301d ago

Yeah, I'm confused. Do I get the next generation titles, or am I good with current gen and save money until the big hitters arrive in 2014?

Kingscorpion19814301d ago

Hard to say. If you wanna save money I would wait for the big hitters first. Most people can't wait though :)

HammadTheBeast4301d ago

Wait until Naughty Dog or Media Molecule or Sony Santa Monica release their major titles. Or even wait for Halo.

GuyThatPlaysGames4301d ago

Just get next-gen. It's only about $600 by the time u get everything you need.

annus4301d ago

How would next-gen change gameplay in any game? There doesn't seem to be anything that's not already possible gameplay wise, unless it directly correlates to things like AI, physics etc. But that doesn't really 'change' the gameplay.

annus4301d ago

Thanks for disagreeing. Good to see that not a single person can come up with an actual valid response.

Grave4301d ago

Think he was mentioning the stale gameplay of current-gen shooters i.e. DM, TDM, CTF, C&H, Zone Control, etc., all in closed-box maps which tend to get repetitive very quickly.

annus4301d ago

All I see is PR for a stale franchise trying to bait in crowds from the larger games. Your example is the only real way a competitive match would work, otherwise it's just free roaming in a huge map, of which current consoles could still do.

All I get from the article is that he is adding in the feature of seeing people doing their own thing, without interfering with your own challanges or whatever. That's pretty much what MMOs are, that's nothing new, and that still doesn't CHANGE gameplay. Cool, you get to see someone driving...

GuyThatPlaysGames4301d ago

I agree with you 100%. I havent seen anything gameplay-wise that can't be achieved right now as we speak. Just some razzle dazzle graphics.

fghtrer3fb5erg4301d ago

Graphics are important, i dont want to look at low density pixel/polygon on the screen, look at the detail in killzone shadow fall, driveclub and infamous, it looks stunning even with draw distance, if youre playing a ps360 game and move 200 meters away from a building or whatever it starts looking ugly and blurry, next gen games will look stunning in every way no matter how far you move away from something.

Hufandpuf4301d ago

Depends on how big the screen is though, when you talk about distance.

fghtrer3fb5erg4301d ago

not about screens, but, draw distance in video games

Most wanted 2012 imo was awful, on PS3 the graphics are dreadful, and the crash cam was very annoying. Rival is the worst imo, hated that game. My favourite is Hot Pursuit, great game. Also Shift 1&2 are really good.

OnlyThoseOnTheFence2139d ago

High Stakes will always be my favorite. Great cars, great music, and you could see through the windows which was pretty mind-blowing at the time. Best of all it was ricer-free.

steven83r2139d ago

Lame. The list doesn't even include any of the originals. NFS 1 and NFS hot Pursuit 1998. Must be a youngster who created the list.

CYALTR2138d ago

He clearly stated that being this was an Xbox centered site he was going to limit his list to games that released on some form of Xbox. He also stated he had been playing them since OG PLaystation, so pretty sure he's not a "youngster"

From my personal experience NFS I personally don't like.......
The Worst : Underground 2 , Carbon, Prostreets, Undercover, Porche unleashed, Nitro, NFS World, 2012 Mostwanted, Rivals, 2015 Reboot last but not least Paycrap.
Best NFS I personally like :
All ps1 NFS : HighStakes (the best) including NFS 3 Hotpursuit , ps2 Hotpursuit 2 (Excellent game ) ..Underground ( Best so far)
2005 Mostwanted ( Excellent game) Shift 1/2 (Spectacular) remind me of GT , 2010 Hotpursuit Great game but race Waaaaaaay to long in my personal opinion . Last but not least The Run . these are my favorite NFS titles .
After The Run in my personal opinion NFS went down hill fast with Open world mapping crap, always online, multiplayer crap, alldrive, drifting in every freaking corners, no gripping anymore, autolog. None of this crapfest is NFS original formula. until Ea contract Ghost Games to return the original formula back in NFS it will always be Shitty game.
