Developers Share Why Women Characters Matter Beyond Diversity

Video games have long neglected the potential of female heroes, instead putting women in princess or other subservient roles. We may be headed in a better direction, as 2013 has been a record year for memorable, well-developed female leads. Lara Croft made her comeback through a personal journey in Tomb Raider, Elizabeth proved herself a worthy ally in BioShock Infinite, and Ellie did young girls proud in The Last of Us.

GamesBeat talked to some of the developers of these games and more, asking what makes women characters important? Diversity is something we should strive for, but are we missing more compelling reasons for including them? Do Lara and Ellie only matter to fill the gender gap — to appeal to a wider demographic and counter narrow marketing assumptions?

I'm convinced that the way forward for gaming is more gender-neutral characters -- not androgyny, but parts that could be played by either sex ... like Chell.

Sadie21004293d ago

Good point from Greg Kasavin about the lack of females in the Riddick game.

wita4293d ago

Kasavin's answers were amazing in general. Really glad to have his input.

There's a lot of this sentiment: "Developers need to put more thought into creating the “right characters” for their worlds, he said. “The more that happens, the more interesting characters I think we’ll see, many of whom will be women purely from narrative necessity.”

The problem with this is that taking such an approach is prone to falling into really conventional ideas. If you create a world into which your female character comfortably fits, there's a big chance that you're just perpetuating conventional and customary understandings of women. Devs should find ways to insert women into games in unconventional ways in order to reconfigure cultural complacencies. Story should be important of course, but when you're dealing with female characters, you've got to be more conscientious. Working off of what "feels right" in this case is asking for a laying bare of your own prejudices and preconceptions. It's close to the attitude of trying to make your work exist in a bubble- as only a narrative free from the encroachments of politics and culture. A narrative is never free from these things. You are the one who is writing it, it is your thoughts which create it, and those thoughts emanate from your wider social, cultural and political context. Every narrative ultimately, regardless of it's fantastical logic, obeys underpinning social and cultural laws that YOU have carried to them, someties unwittingly. The point is to pay closer attention to those ambient aspects in your construction of a narrative.

By and large though, I agree with most of the sentiments expressed by these devs. There absolutely should come a time where there's literally nothing jarring about a female character being the protagonist and a strong one at that. However, they talk like we've already reached that point, as if there's no work to be done. There definitely still needs to be conscious work done to shatter certain paradigms, we're far from being out of the woods yet.

That said, one effective way to culturally integrate women in this way is probably to treat gender as not determininistic- as an identity or self-defition that isn't incarcerating and deeply limiting. To avoid treating gender as a little box that limits a person's subjectivity, and how they ought to be and ought to behave. In a way, treating gender really indifferently in your games is a good way to achieve this. However, like Druckman says, I think you need to insert little subversions here and there. It's not enough to just pretend gender isn't an issue when in this day and age it clearly is. You really need to strike a balance between subverting conventional understandings, and conveying an indifference with regards to the actual substance of gender.

As expected. Unless it's going to Xbox or Switch 2, we can stop hearing about these older games now? We can move on to just news about new games?

darthv7242d ago

....until the PS6 remake followed by the PS7 reboot

Christopher42d ago

Man, first year of PS6 is going to be 90% remasters. I'm going to hate it and likely hold off until new games actually get released that I can't play on my PS5.

Cacabunga42d ago

Yes I’m waiting for complete remaster…. On ps5

OtterX42d ago

...20 years later, "you haven't heard the last of us yet!" *releases The Last of Us Retro Collection*

cloganart42d ago

@Christopher

Oof, yeah. I don't think I'm picking up the PS6 until "Pro" comes out 😂

Cacabunga41d ago

I haven’t played Tlou1 since PS3 and i have the greatest memory of it

Notellin41d ago

I'm already dreading all the cross generation games and remasters we'll see with the next round of consoles.

LonDonE41d ago

lmao this is getting ridiculous but thing is if people keep buying them.. then why would they stop making them?
Peeps STOP BUYING this game.. that actually hurts me to say this as the last of us is high up on my greatest games of all times.. its one of the few games i played through start to finish 3/4 times back to back as i loved it so much. But sony need to stop, give us a Resistance 3 remaster, i would love and buy that.. such an underated series as was killzone.
Or give us infamous.. so many great series and titles i would gladly buy but they just want to keep giving us last of us.

I am done buying that game.. i would only buy part 2 remaster if they remade it and kept joel alive, or i am not interested. Hate last of us 2s story killing off joel.. the actual game is stunning and incredible, they improved so much in the gameplay department but i hate the story with a passion.

We can stop hearing about it when they stop re-releasing them I guess.

I reckon the ps6 version will be 8k 240 and I'll still not care.

I miss new games from nd

Inverno42d ago

And HBO just announced season 3 even tho LoU2 couldn't possibly be so long that it wouldn't be able to fit in 1 season. They're just milking it at this point.

darthv7242d ago

speaking of the HBO series... I felt they should have made part 1 across two seasons, then address part 2 in seasons 3 and 4. so now i have a feeling they rushed through part 1 in season 1 to make season 2 a cliff hanger with Joel's impending demise being the starting point to Season 3.

-Foxtrot42d ago

I love how they decided to rush, chop and change things for Season 1 to get through the game yet for TLOU Part II it’s like “we’re going to do multiple seasons and take our time”

Inverno42d ago

Okay after seeing that there's only 7 episodes I take it back. Though I think it's incredibly stupid not to have just made the season longer. Another season just to finish what could've just been a 13 episode season seems counterintuitive but aiight. I put that on HBO tho.

Neonridr42d ago

This will be the 4th time Sony sells us The Last of Us Part 1.. And the 2nd time on the PS5.

Knushwood Butt42d ago

They don't want Metroid Prime holding that record,

NotoriousWhiz41d ago

Strange, I thought the record went to Street Fighter 2.

FPS_D3TH42d ago

We are approaching Skyrim levels here

Profchaos42d ago

At this point we are at Skyrim in terms of frequency. Skyrim was one per generation. If you exclude VR Skyrim we've now exceeded it

Tlou 1 PS3, 1 PS4 2 ps5
Skyrim 1 ps360 2 PS4/x1/vr 1 ps5/sx

Tlou 4
Skyrim 4

Christopher42d ago

Not quite. Skyrim had:

PS3/360/PC
PS4/X1
VR
Switch
Skyrim Special Edition PC/PS4/X1
Skyrim Special Edition PS5/XSX

VersusDMC42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Also add skyrim bundles like the one below and all the humble bundles since that's what everyone is doing here

https://www.xbox.com/en-CA/...

darthv7242d ago

@Chris, LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base. At least Skyrim was able to sell to a wider audience via different platforms.

Christopher42d ago

@darthv72: I don't know why you're telling me that. I only corrected on number of Skyrim re-releases/ports/etc. I didn't say anything else.

Profchaos42d ago

@christopher guess I forgot just how much was out I think the special editions are technically one release despite being cross platform though would the Alexa version count

Christopher42d ago

@Profchaos: I guess, but I'd consider it a separate release since it rolled them into one at a later date but definitely there is a PS5/XSX version with PS5/XSX supported updates specific to them.

Chevalier41d ago

"LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base"

Weird. Like 35% of PS5 owners are NEW to Playstation. Plus this is really for new fans from the TV series for season 2 of TLOU.

I recall the same idiotic comments when the 1st one was remade just before TLOU TV Series came out and it went on the be one of the best selling games that year.

So maybe get your FACTS straight. Unlike Skyrim getting literally releases in 3 generations and 10 releases.

Neonridr41d ago

I gotta figure RE4 is up there too

FPS_D3TH41d ago

No. Those are remakes. Not remasters

Neonridr41d ago

@FPS - we've had quite a few RE4 remasters, only 1 remake.

CrimsonWing6940d ago (Edited 40d ago )

@FPS_D3TH

It blows my mind how people do some mental gymnastics to try to cope with a game they like doing the same thing (technically more) they’re complaining about for another game.

RE4 - PS2, GC
RE4 w Motion Controls - Wii
Literally RE4 HD Remaster - Xbox 360, PS3
I’m assuming a port of RE HD - PS4, Xbox One
RE4 Remake - PS5, Xsex

1 Remake and the bunch are Remasters… how, I mean how—Y’know what, it doesn’t matter anymore…

P_Bomb42d ago

Store says I already own it. I guess it’s just a straight twin-pack. Looks like they added 4 maps to ‘No Return’.

VersusDMC42d ago

You don't need to buy this to get the maps, marlene and bill. It all got patched in to the game on the 3rd.

P_Bomb42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Good to know. I’ve watched runs of ‘No Return’ but have yet to try it myself. Soon, soon 😉

Knushwood Butt42d ago

Yeah, No Return got a content update.
Three new trophies too.

It's probably a bundle of both The Last of Us games

Nyxus52d ago

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. The Last of Us Part 1 + II Remastered.

lukasmain52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

That's totally what it is I believe. It would be a great bundle for new players getting into the ecosystem

52d ago
Goodguy0152d ago

They're really milking this franchise lol

anast52d ago

You must comment on every Mario, Zelda, and Skyrim article too.

darthv7252d ago

....because there has been the same mario, Zelda and Skyrim games for three console generations?

52d ago
isarai51d ago

@darthv72

Literally yes 🤨

Cacabunga51d ago

Every Mario and Zelda is different. This is just the exact same game over and over

anast51d ago

Skyrim, yes. Mario and Zelda since the 80's

Loktai51d ago

@darthv72 Uh yes. Yes it has. They milked BOTW across Wii U and switch and they STILL want 40+ for it new and never discounted it. They made "remasters" of older zelda games as well on switch and in the past onto the other gameboy platforms from the older platforms. They have done the same with Mario. They port the paper mario games and mario RPG to switch. And now I PROMISE you they are going to show "enhancements" for those same games on Switch 2. I PROMISE you thats going to get mentioned, maybe even tomorrow. Last of us Part 1 has been across techncially 3 generations, but 2 has been 2- and JUST BARELY 2 because it released just a few months before the PS5 did - and so if that counts as milking it, what do you call breath of the wild on Wii U then going to switch or Twilight Princess coming uot on gamecube and Wii - OR ZELDA WIND WAKER HD coming out?

"Skyrim games for three console generations?"

Darth showing some idiocy here. Seriously yes Skyrim has been re-released more than any other game period. It's been released on 3 generations - PS3, PS4, PS5, PSVR, PC, PC VR, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S. That's 10 releases across 3 generations! So Seriously get your DAMN facts straight.

Yui_Suzumiya51d ago

And yet Fallout 3 has never been Remastered. Prison time should be given for that offense, lol

darthv7251d ago

Skyrim sure, but the other two... not so much

thorstein51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

@darth GTAV says hi.

Skyrim has an Alexa edition.

Chevalier51d ago

Clearly a guy with business acumen! Why would Sony want to rebundle games and release them in time for the 2nd season of TLOU to release? I mean the last time a bunch of idiots laughed at Sony then guess what? TLOU part 1 for PS5 only hit top 5 sales and kept popping onto charts throughout the year?! Lol

51d ago
Chevalier51d ago

"Skyrim sure, but the other two... not so much"

Multiple Mario and Zelda games have made 2 generations. Maybe you guys forget that over a 3rd of the gamers on Playstation have NEVER owned a Playstation system before and some are coming into it as a result of the TV show.

People said the EXACT same crap when the 1st game got released on PS5, but, it ended up being one of the best selling games the year it came out.

Also for all the idiots complaining. Playstation at least offer $10 upgrades for some of these games. Have you EVER seen a re-release by Nintendo, Xbox, Bethesda offer that?! No I didn't think so.

darthv7251d ago

releasing a newer version because the previous version is not physically compatible is not quite the same as taking a perfectly good existing game that already works on the newer platform and repackaging it under a remaster brand for that newer platform and then repackaging it AGAIN for the same platform.

And that whole line of *insert people here may not have had a PS before* is a line of BS. PS2 is the most selling platform in history... chances are very good a high percentage upgrade to the PS3 and then upgraded to the PS4 and are upgrading again for the PS5. So dont give me that line of bologna. you'd rather swallow every bit of Sony propaganda instead of call them out for milking (and yes this is milking) this game. You know there will be a PS6 version and likely a PS7 remaster.

Of course i am purely speculating on the 6 & 7 but there is a high degree of probability because of what they did already between 3, 4 & 5. And you defending even the $10 upgrade when most of the XB games get free upgrades is just another sign of your blind loyalty. I didnt think it possible and gave you benefit of the doubt but now I can see i was totally wrong.

Chevalier50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

@Darth

Again your examples are absolutely terrible. Repackaged games for new audiences isn't new with the high cost of development. This release is timed for people that are new to Playstation coming from watching season 2 of the TV show. If you're surprised and annoyed by this then stop gaming then. It will happen if there's some new Skyrim, Fallout, Doom or whatever TV show comes out too.

Also you're the guy who defends Xbox for this crap too. Skyrim releases were done while owned by Xbox.

Also you mentioned the PS2, repackaged games happened all the time then too. If you think that repackaged games is going to go away with the skyrocketing cost of development is going away then sorry cover your eyes and plug your ears and pretend like an idiot then. You will be complaining daily soon.
