ATLUS: Who Is the Best Bidder Gamers Should Root For?

There has been a lot of speculation about who should purchase Atlus, and the two most relevant names on everyone's minds are Sony and Nintendo, but there's a third name that could prove to be a much better fit for the company, and more advantageous both for Atlus itself and for gamers on all platforms.

why are people making such a huge fuss over this when Atlus aren't selling anything yet?

Abriael4084d ago

Because Index is rumored to open bidding this week.

Kamikaze1354084d ago

Index is selling assets, but apparently Atlus is their most profitable asset and they are trying to not auction it off.

raiden-494084d ago

@Kamikaze135
If the price is right they will sell.

RememberThe3574083d ago

@raiden: You could say that about nearly anything.

majiebeast4084d ago (Edited 4084d ago )

Best thing would be a third party publisher or another holding group like Index.

Gungho is the best for every gamer they just bought grasshopper(Suda51's studio) and are looking to expand further in to console gaming and Atlus would be perfect for them and theyc an actually benefit from the Atlus publishing wing and localization wing(Atlus US) They work closely with Kadokawa holding group so the Persona 3 movie's would not be in trouble unlike if say Nintendo bought Atlus.

If Nintendo or Sony bought them the games on the rival systems will get pulled off the shelves and digital stores. So Sony and Nintendo would actually be worst case scenario if Sony bought them SMT4 would get pulled off the shelves and if Nintendo bought them the Persona franchise and Dragons Crown would get pulled.

Abriael4084d ago (Edited 4084d ago )

Gung ho is a little less desirable for what I am concerned because their president is a tad too "hands on" with the games they produce, I prefer an owner like kadokawa that allows studios full creative freedom.

Also Gung ho doesn't have the same financial backing as kadokawa, and doesn't hold credit towards Index.

majiebeast4084d ago

Killer is dead looks pretty much like a Suda51 game to me. http://www.bloomberg.com/ne...

Doesnt sound like a bad guy plus they made Dokuro.

Abriael4084d ago (Edited 4084d ago )

@Majiebeast: it was on several interviews over the Japanese press. They didn't make it sound like he was meddling in a negative way, but he's very hands on, and i'd much rather no meddling at all.

majiebeast4084d ago

Ok we shall see we cant do anything anyway. Tencent is also a possibility.

klecser4084d ago (Edited 4084d ago )

Exactly. Because when car companies buy up smaller companies, those cars get pulled off the market?

Or when a record label buys a smaller record label, anything recorded under a different label gets pulled from the artist's catalogue?

Or when General Mills buys up a subsidiary of Nabisco, that food that was developed by Nabisco gets pulled from store shelves?

There is SO MUCH just flat out WRONG with your last paragraph.

Dude, you can't retroactively wipe a rival's games off the face of the Earth when you acquire a game studio. It doesn't work that way.

GloriousBagel4083d ago

This is where you are wrong sir.

This is a different scenario, if Sony were to buy Atlus. Why would Sony keep a product that is for their rival company on shelves? They would pull it off, it's not like they can repackage shin megami tensei 4 or smack a Vita cover on it. They would have to port to the Vita and go through a lengthy process. I really hope a third party buys them, but anyone except for Namco, Square Enix and Capcom.

klecser4083d ago (Edited 4083d ago )

Companies don't have the legal leverage to retroactively discontinue products of their rivals just because they bought a company that worked for the rival.

You don't gain past intellectual property rights when you buy a company.

Read this article:

http://www.boston.com/busin...

Warner got FUTURE rights to LOTR games, because Turbine held the rights. But it wasn't like they pulled previous LOTR games off shelves, which are on various platforms.

tacotruck4084d ago

Great read and interesting stance. I hadn't thought about the possibility for Kadokawa until checking this out.

Regardless of who winds up owning Atlus in the coming weeks, let's hope that they have the company's best interest in mind. It would be a shame to see such a storied company fall by the wayside because they were bought up by someone who didn't know how to manage them as a brand.

MadLad4084d ago (Edited 4084d ago )

Keeping the games multi-platform would be best for everyone.

sephiroth4204084d ago

i hope square enix dont get it for the fact they are putting out so many mobile games, id like to see a multi-platform dev buy it, maybe level 5

Filing Lawsuit for Infringement of Patent Rights against Pocketpair, Inc.

Nintendo and Pokemon Company have filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair Inc., the creators of Palworld, in Tokyo, Japan.

Ye, Custom Robo Arena was a lot better than Pokemon anyways, now that's a game.

Eonjay6d ago

Interestingly this comes like a day after they announced they would be at the Tokyo Games Show.

Vits6d ago

We should all really hope so. Otherwise, this could lead to many issues, as they hold patents on numerous game mechanics. And when I say numerous, I truly mean it. Take this one, for example:

"Abstract: In an example of a game program, a ground boarding target object or an air boarding target object is selected by a selection operation, and a player character is caused to board the selected boarding target object. If the player character aboard the air boarding target object moves toward the ground, the player character is automatically changed to the state where the player character is aboard the ground boarding target object, and brought into the state where the player character can move on the ground."

In plain English, do you guys remember that super amazing mechanic where you surf on the water with a Pokémon, and then when you hit land, it changes to you walking? Yeah, they patented that.

A patent lawsuit? What Pokémon-related patent could Palworld even be infringing that other similar games haven't? This makes no sense. Feels like Nintendo just trying to throw its weight around to bully competitors, just like they do with emulators even though they're legal.

Kaii6d ago

They can't Innovate their own IP, but when others are breaking the ceiling, they run to the courts, gtfo Nintendo/Gamefreak.

Companies' gatekeeping mechanics behind the patent system to stifle innovation, consumers will always pick the better product, it's not the consumer's fault that Gamefreak has sat on their lazy assess for years.

Kornholic6d ago

"Consumers will always pick the better product"

Since when?

swedishMeatwad6d ago

You can't argue with _subjective_ taste. Some people are going to like games you find crappy. I'm happy not everyone has the same taste.

Kornholic5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@swedishMeatwad

PS5 Pro is obviously objectively the better product when compared to the base PS5, but the majority of consumers interested in a PS5 will not be picking Pro over base PS5.

There are countless examples like this out there.

The_Blue6d ago

Rather you like it or not COD has many accessible options and customization that allows for better experience than most other FPS.

Knightofelemia6d ago

The Palworld has been out since January of 2024 and now Nintendo finally decides to do something. I fail to see how Palworld is like Pokemon besides evolving monsters. There are other games out there as well where you can capture and level up monsters. Tales of Symphonia 2 does that capture monsters and have them fight with you and they evolve when levelling up. The two games might share some similarities but what game doesn't borrow from another game. I could understand if Palworld was just a straight on copy clone of Pokemon but it's not. Nintendo is starting to become a pain in the ass. Going full gung ho with rom sites that I can see, purposely taking down pictures from a strategy guide for Mario 64 the strategy guide never came to North America and Nintendo had the pictures taken down. Where does it every stop with Nintendo?

babadivad6d ago

Monsters don't evolve in Palworld

Software_Lover6d ago

It's because Palworld became a worldwide viral success. Nintendo can't fathom someone else being that popular when it comes to a small monster catching game.

VersusDMC6d ago

Nintendo is only acting now because they just finished a lawsuit which they won.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Atlus should get on this and sue Nintendo as SMT came out before Pokemon. If Nintendo is going to play this game.

isarai6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

This feels like a scare tactic more than anything else. There's nothing here dozens of other games haven't already done, they're just mad this game showed people how much the pokemon series has been slackin and are desperately trying to make an example out of them.

How's about instead of spending all that money on court fees and lawyers you invest it into making pokémon better?

Profchaos6d ago

I think if it was a scare tactic it would have happened when the game came out I have a feeling they've been building a case for a while

isarai6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

It did happen even before the game came out, they tried several tomes before and nothing came of it

Profchaos6d ago

I was pretty sure the only statement they made was they would investigate
