Have you ever played and absolutely adored a game that press and public alike seemed to despise? The USgamer team gives its thoughts on a selection of favorite "underdogs" through the years.
Yeah I totally LOVE SaGa Frontier! I found at that it wasn't popular, but a family friend had lent it to me from his PS1 collection, and the game is absolutely brilliant! It was like a sandbox JRPG with dark undertones in it's plot and some very unique, experimental approaches to the genre.
All the time. The first Monster Hunter (PS2) Resonance of Fate, SaGa Frontier (@Donnieboi, it was hated?!) Tenchu Z, Dark Sector, Dynasty Warriors, Shinobido 2, PSASBR, Resident Evil ORC and 6, they were not great games, but not as bad as everyone made them seem.
That is just by going through my memory and trophy list, not at my actual game collection right now.
Also, I seem to hate alot of games that are adored by millions.
Oh yes sir SaGa had some bad reviews. I was young then, but apparently it would seem that people were just getting off of the high of FF7, so when SaGa came, they didn't care for the 2d sprites, and budget feel. Plus it's a crazy hard. Probably the hardest jrpg ever made. And there is no easy mode option. SaGa 2 got even worse reviews, but it really was an unbalanced and overly-linear mess. SaGa 1 was much better. I think SaGa was Squares answer to the Star Ocean series before merging with Enix. It was popular in Japan, but was an acquired taste for westerners who were still new to the growing popularity Jrpg's (due to FF 7 & 8)

so bad it was good. The cheese on that game made it worth playing and it was quite fun. repetitive but still fun.
