IGN: Game of the Year Watch: The Last of Us vs. BioShock Infinite

Six months into 2013, it's time to take stock of the best games of the year so far

Nah, both of these games are fantastic but we all know that all the major sites are going to go ga-ga over GTA5 and ignore everything else that comes out this year. That said, I think both of these games deserve a few nominations and a few GotY wins.

So true! TLOU beats Bioshock for me. I loved both, but it's not very close run in my opinion.

TLOU feels fresh and you can't knock the impact it's having for a new IP, especially being only on one platform. If it was multiplat, more people would agree, but alas, some will play 'sides'...

(See rest of comments where historically anti-PS guys say along lines of "Bioshock is way better", when you know they're unlikely to have played TLOU...)

To play TLOU, is to love it, as long as people are honest. But as you say, gamers and critics alike, love to heap praise on R* games, so I'd bet on GTA5 even at this point!

long answer tlou killed everything so far this year including a great game like bioshock.
one question....what if killzone ps4 or watchdogs are great? gtav? still tlou is my easy pick so far....but tge year is only half over.

Having enjoyed both The Last of Us and Bioshock (on PC) I think LoU just edges it.

Having said that, I couldn't blame anyone for choosing Bioshock over TLoU as it is an amazing game. Just happy that so many awesome games are getting released.

GTA5 is going to outsell everything and I am sure will be an amazing game, simply put, Rockstar don't make bad games. All the same, unless they do something incredible with the story telling I cannot see it topping Bioshock or TLoU as game of the year.

With the Walking Dead generally being considered as GOTY last year I think that demonstrates that story and atmosphere are what win votes, often at the expense of gameplay or technical accomplishments.

tlou is my pick for goty so far. i haven't played bioshock infinite yet so i can't speak for it BUT, judging by the videos i've seen on youtube it seems a tad overrated.

You should really reserve judgement chief, it is a flipping brilliant game. The fact that it is cropping up in these kinds of conversations should tell you just how high a quality it is.

It certainly isn't overated, I can tell you that. Whether it is better than TLOU, not quite for me personally, but there isn't much between them, honestly!

I personally liked the story of Bioshock more, and the game play of the last of us more..Bioshock just stuck in my mind for so much longer than tlou did..but like previous people have said, unless something goes horribly wrong, sites are going to eat gta5 right up

TLOU is still hyped and fresh on people's minds, I suspect in a few months more people would feel differently, especially when GTA5 comes out and becomes the game everyone talks about

The Last of Us is just an astounding feat in game design.

Personally, alongside RDR, it's my favourite title this gen.

Never played anything quite like it, and to some extent, I hope I never do again.

Honestly one of a kind.

Bioshock Infinite was not a better game, combat was limited compare too first 2 games.

Elizabeth was a unbelievable character too me, she been lock in a room for years, some random stranger bust in an she follow him with out question...

an as it no big deal to trust him the entire time, intill she was smart enough too understand coordinates an is shocked he was going betray her.

i enjoy the ending, it was a nice twist the last hour or so i enjoyed. i fell asleep trying get too that point. an wonder why everyone was screaming it was worth game of the year

Rockstar has a long way to impress me,cause gta 4 was a disappointing mess for me(red dead redemption deserves all the praise critics gave to gta4 imo)

True! I reserved it and got it the night before of release at a local store. Iwas so hyped! Then sold it after two weeks when I finished it to gamestop for $40. I think that's the only time I've ever done that with a game I buy on release.

I know that feel bro, i was blinded by the praise and the disturbingly overrated metascore of 98. The game was just mediocre to good,nothing special. Way too repetitive,lack of mission variety and just plain boring at times. Easily the most overrated game of all time, I can think of :/

This is honestly a toughie.

I think the characters were stronger in TLOU, and I think the combat was a little better as well.

That said, I think the atmosphere was better in Bioshock, and I also liked the ending a little more (The ending to TLOU was great, but it also felt like a suckerpunch in my stomach)

Tough call...I guess I'll only know at the end of the year which is better by which I remember more of.

havent got to TLOU yet because ive been to busy. i finished Bioshock Infinite, and while i found the story absolutely epic, it isnt a genre defining game like HL or HL2 were. but from a story perspective, it was brilliant and left me picking up my jaw at the end.

i am pretty much expecting the same from TLOU. a great story driven game, but nothing that adds to the genre that makes it stand out from UC2.

See, this makes it very hard to tell. With the turn of the next generation coming at the end of the year, it's hard to tell if these games will still be GOTY.

Last of Us is my current GOTY tho. And I doubt that'll change. Even with powerhouses like GTA (lost interest with 4), Beyond: Two Souls, Watch_Dogs, and other games. I already feel nothing will make me as invested in a universe like The Last of Us did.

The Last of Us beats every single game of every genre for all consoles combined and some PC games included.

Was quite sure Uncharted Series might/could take it, but TLoU simply is on another level.

Should be Game of The Year, of the Decade and the Century even.

i said at the beginning of this year it was gonna be 3 games at the top one bioshock infinite two the last of us and three gta 5. lets see how many 10's gta 5 gets so far the last of us is in the lead with the most 10's

Sooo... I didn't like the Uncharted series (too linear). How is TLOU gameplay compared to Uncharted? Is it full of QTE's?
(I'll probably get TLOU anyways because I sure like a good story)

In my experience, I felt like I had more choice playing The Last of Us compared to Uncharted. While the levels are by no means fully open, they do give a little more scope than simply one set path.

You also have a lot more choice than Uncharted due to the ability to use supplements to improve different traits, upgrade weapons and decide to craft different items.

QTEs are not very common unless having to fend of a melee attack, but that hardly counts.

Overall I'ld say definitely get it, even if just to experience the story, which I found brilliant.

Gta 5 will be fun to play but the last of us is an amzing game. You just have to play it to see for yourself. Believe me you will be amazed. best game ive played since metal gear solid 4. These two games are the best this generation. hands down.
