Microsoft thought they owned Donkey Kong

According to former Rare employee and “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” director, Chris Seavor, Microsoft mistakenly thought they owned the Donkey Kong franchise after they bought Rare.

This makes me appreciate the fact that we're getting another donkey kong country from Retro even more. Because if microsft did end up owning DK, we wouldn't be seeing much of him.

UNGR4005d ago

You know that how exactly? DK is a huge franchise, Microsoft would milk it if anything.

Jagsrock4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

@UNGR
He knows because Banjo-Kazooie.

gamer424005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Banjo-Kazooie was a big franchise as well, but we don't see much of them now do we? Except for a game that left a majority of fans disappointed, Microsoft hasn't taken advantage of any of Rare's major Ips. Killer Instinct is a step in the right direction, but whether it's good or not is yet to be known.

FlyingFoxy4005d ago

Well they milked Halo, which wasn't even special in the first place.. already has more sequels than Half Life or Doom.

husomc4005d ago

They'd make a Donkey Kong & Master Chief save the world game

SilentNegotiator4005d ago

Darn, I was really hoping to see "Donkey Kong: Forced XBL and Kinect Features, and Bolts"

/s

Thank God Nintendo retained that IP.

blacktiger4005d ago

He knows because Killer Instinct. My favourite game of all time became my graveyard. Or at least forgotten :(

abzdine4005d ago

Soon they will think that they own Zelda.

Facepalm

slaton244005d ago

ok look how long for killer instinct it took missing a whole generation just to finally do a game...I think donkey kong would have been shelved because so many gamers on 360 were mostly into shooters I may be wrong but its my opinion.

southernbanana4005d ago

@Flying fox. That is the most ridiculous comment I have read on here in a while..

karl4004d ago

im sorry but the only one who can make a donkey kong game is nintendo..

it needs certain magic that only nintendo has...

Shane Kim4004d ago

@karl

To be honest though, every DK game worth playing and wich became popular has been made by rareware. The 80's Nintedo DK games are pretty mediocre,.

LackTrue4K4005d ago

im not even a fan of Donkey Kong, but im glad they did not get them.....what a bunch of morons! lol...

thebigman4005d ago

Rare isn't even developing KI, it's being outsourced to another company. Rare will never be the company they were

Smashbro294004d ago

Miyamoto made up a generic gorilla but the DK we know today that fights crocodiles for bananas and wears a tie was made by Rare.

thecurseddevil4005d ago

lol.
they would have made a kinect donkey kong.

Syntax-Error4005d ago

How many Kinect games did you see @ E3?

Blachek4005d ago

That Wii Bongo version of Donkey Kong was a ton of fun

itBourne4005d ago

Microsoft isnt even letting Rare do the Killer Instinct game either. Lol poor rare, altough Im sure at this point rare is just a name, I cant imagine most of the original employees have stayed there.

BDSE4005d ago

None of them are there.

Syntax-Error4005d ago

Seriously? No one from the original Rare is there. They gave it to a new team that was ambitious and hungry. Rare had a shot and look what they did to Perfect Dark Zero. They just didnt have what it took to be what they were. Some developers regress and Rare was one of them. Killer Instinct took a long time because of legal issues, it wasn't because of MS. When MS was granted the IP the first thing they did was secure the domain name.

Veneno4005d ago

As ridiculous as that is, my xbot buddy thinks you can download mario games from xbox live and he believes Microsoft own EA. I try my hardest to educate him but I think he likes deluding himself.

jeffgoldwin4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Maybe he's thinking all of his Ron Jeremy videos are Mario irl.

It's a me MARIO: http://ronjeremy.com/

HonestDragon4005d ago

Can't say you don't try. He isn't the only Xbox owner to think Mario is available on the 360.

wastedcells4004d ago (Edited 4004d ago )

They must of over paid for rare then if they thought DK was part of the deal lol. I joke. Did they think they got golden eye too.

As the terminator said in the gunshop "Wrong"

Enemy4005d ago

Well, they do own Killer Instinct, which for some reason "adapted" the same exact art style from Street Fighter 4.

sAVAge_bEaST4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

yea, but donkey kong is a totally different beast.
born in the arcade by nintendo, -gave birth to mario, and the princess.
This is Nintendo[s baby, and how M$ thought they could just buy it ,, is hilarious,.
(rare developed KI)

Your hilarious lol are u on this site all day?? Are u getting paid by sony to rag on M.S all day? U have something negative to say on just about every subject that has to do with M.S or u will find a way to involve M.S into your comments lol CRAZY!!

InTheLab4005d ago

@gamerchik

Until MS earns back the respect of gamers, that deserve every bit of static they receive. They have accomplished nothing in this industry with third and last place finishes for a few console gens but are somehow arrogant enough to try and screw over loyal customers. The last few months has shown the world that MS is a s$$$ company that throws piles of cash at problems instead of fixing them and is willing to inconvenience consumers at every turn.

After the xbone, ALL MS hate is justified.

As for the topic, MS did what they always do. Drop a huge chunk of cash and hope for the best. All they got in return is Conker and a depleted Rare that's really in name only.

Imalwaysright4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Donkey Kong was the 1st platformer ever made and it is without any doubt one of the most influential and revolutionary games ever made. Donkey Kong's legacy is much bigger than just Mario or Peach. Donkey Kong is the "father" of every platforming game ever made.

sAVAge_bEaST4005d ago

w0e , calm down there REP.manager. , I'm just keeping it real,,
not my fault. M$ makes daily mistakes.

b3ast4005d ago

gamerchik is there anything good to say about MS? and WTF has DK to do with Sony, you must feel threaten you silly fangirl!

Darrius Cole4005d ago

Donkey Kong is the first appearance of Mario. Anyone who thought that Microsoft could possibly have bought it should not be working in the Xbox division of Microsoft.

Syntax-Error4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

What does Donkey Kong have to do with Mario? Just because Mario was in the original game has nothing to do with the character Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong can be sold without Mario you dummy. If Rare bought the Donkey Kong IP and MS bought it from them then DK would be owned by MS. Learn something. Did you see Mario in Donkey Kong Country? No, so why would one have anything to do with the other? How old are you? It wasn't MS that thought they owned DK, it was some idiot thinking they did because of Rare's name on the DKC poster. Same can be said when morons in here make dumb assumptions

callahan094005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

@Syntax-Error

His point wasn't that Nintendo couldn't sell the Donkey Kong IP without selling Mario, it was that they WOULDN'T! Donkey Kong was Nintendo's first major successful release in the video game industry and it is one of the most iconic games and IPs of all time. Anybody who thought Nintendo would sell that IP without doing a complete firesale of the entir company's assets was being delusional.

Syntax-Error4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Now you're over-thinking the comment. NOWHERE in his comment did it say what you said. He said "DK is the first appearance of Mario.." He didnt mention anything about DK being Nintendo's first major hit. Stop thinking for someone else and worry about why you're sounding like a fanboy trying to sugarcoat his ignorance. Also, you don't know what they would do concerning an IP. Miyamoto wasn't part of DKC and Rare made the game NOT Nintendo, so don't think Nintendo is exclusive with its IP's

It really did. Like I came out of that with the hype for new games I haven’t felt since… well the better years of E3.

Is Xbox Going Multi-Platform The Right Decision For The Console Market?

Can we stop pretending that Xbox has any great influence over the console market?

All they can do is try and steer their own Destiny. They have very little to do with what the other players in the console market are doing.

And yes, going 3rd party is pretty much their only option and is good for them.

RaidenBlack6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Still whatever little direct competition they're offering against Sony ... that'd be gone, which is never good for consumers.
I know Sony will continue to apease the gamers but without any proper competition in same space, they might not work at the fullest efficiency.
(Taking into account, thats generally been agreed here, that Nintendo has long been not the direct competitor to either MS or Sony)

xHeavYx6d ago

The " without any proper competition in same space, they (Sony) might not work at the fullest efficiency" narrative has been proven false for years. Let's stop pretending that, in terms of games, Xbox has been any competition to Playstation.

fsfsxii6d ago

Sony had 0 competition for most of its playstation business, and they still succeeded, the only thing xbox introduced was paid online and dlc

maniacmayhem6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Sony had little to no competition during the PS2 era and they have an iconic catalog.

I don't think Sony needs competition in the console space to still release great games. It would be the games that would be competing against each other.

Einhander19726d ago

Xbox does not need to exist for PlayStation to have competition.

They compete with Nintendo, PC, streaming and countless other devices.

neutralgamer19926d ago

Yes release games on other platforms

Your own gamers still get the games day one on GP. So GP will grow and stay stabilize

By releasing the games on PC,PlayStation and next switch they can get $70 for their games.

MS didn't invest 100 billion for nothing. This way Xbox generates way more revenue

GhostScholar6d ago

And Sony is doing the same thing whether you want to admit it or not.

anast7d ago

The show was like a sub-show for Sony. All these games are coming to PS5.

7d ago
outsider16247d ago

You gotta admit though..xbox showcase was actually really great.

RpgSama7d ago

I mean, yes, it was an Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda presentation, they just so happened to buy all of those publishers, nothing we would not have seen on any other award show if they had not bought developers that were and STILL are developing multiplatform games.

If you remove them you are left with Microsoft game studios, another Fable, Another Gears, Perfect Dark which for me didn't look all that great, Avowed, Age of mythology and south of midnight (might be missing something I guess)

anast7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

No better than any other show. There weren't any major new announcements, which is what everyone has been complaining about. The bar shouldn't get lowered for a trillion dollar company.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

"another Fable, another Gears, Perfect Dark"?
That's a lot of pretty great "anothers".
I could use a few of those "anothers" from Sony right now.

helicoptergirl6d ago

Yes it was a really great showcase that Xbox had. Multiplats and all. Overall it was really cool

Terry_B6d ago

for pc and playstation..yes it was. Not a single reason was given to buy an xbox.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Perfect Dark looked amazing! Wouldn't mind seeing something like that from Sony tbh.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 4d ago
thesoftware7306d ago

anast,

"All these games are coming to PS5."

Very disingenuous statement... Some, but not all.

Oh, so that is the new narrative, "sub-show for Sony." lol, wow.

The sad part is that you are clearly and fully aware that it is very unlikely for any 1hr and 30min gaming presentation show to showcase ALL Exclusives, it just doesn't happen.

And don't you think it sad that MS had a better Sony showing than Sony? If I were you, I wouldn't consider that a flex, lol.?

anast6d ago

They are coming to PS5, the ones that matter of course.

There is nothing sad here. You might need to start your argument without an emotive.

I don't think they had a better showing. Unless we lower the bar for only Xbox.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

None of us really know how much they're going third party. They're still ACTING like they want to protect the platform - no mention of PS5 in their show, still marketing the console, still using the Xbox logo.
Yeah Phil acknowledged more is coming to PS5. But is that Indiana Jones? Perfect Dark? Gears?
If they keep those key properties in their stable it's not accurate to label them as simply 3rd party.
They may very well still be in the game after all...

anast6d ago

@Coconut

Sony did the same in their last. They showed games that were already announced.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 4d ago
Giga_Gaia7d ago

We need to stop pretending like Xbox matters and has any influence in the industry.

By entering the industry, Microsoft made it worst, everything bad in the industry can be tied to them (like paid online and DLCs). The industry would be better off if they had never been in it.

Before you say Sony would have no competition, they would still have PC and Nintendo. As they are right now, Microsoft are not competition, they don't actually matter.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

I think you're mostly right. They've been failing on console and will most likely drop out.
But the concern a lot of us had was that they would use their $ to win monopolistically. They've already bought a huge number of big studios. Going multi-platform would alleviate that concern.
But they could still turn the screws, this game isn't over quite yet... They're sending mixed signals.

CrimsonWing697d ago

I think in Xbox’s direness it is, but let’s not pretend like they don’t understand the value of exclusiveness to their platform. Not every damn Xbox game is coming to PS5 and the stuff that has hit have either been GaaS games or games that didn’t exactly sell gamgbusters and are extremely niche.

When Halo, Gears, Forza, Perfect Dark, Fable, etc. start coming to PS5 then that’s pretty massive and also diminishes any reason to own an Xbox.

LucasRuinedChildhood7d ago

Doom isn't niche. It was heavily implied that all Bethesda games, outside of games with contractual agreements and the existing multiplayer games, would all be exclusive to Xbox.

CrimsonWing696d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Ok, sorry, Doom is the exception.

My point is Xbox is still keeping exclusives for their bigger games. What’s been released are GaaS: Sea of Thieves, Grounded aka Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and then niche stuff like Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush. Then you got Doom coming out, which is an outlier, I suppose.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

It's not niche but it's not everything.
MS has got a HUGE cache of IP and studios now

Scissorman7d ago

It's the only decision. Hardware sales are on a sharp decline and Game Pass growth has stagnated.
