Crowdfunding Spotlight: Soul Saga

oprainfall writes: "Soul Saga is a 3D turn-based JRPG being made for PC, Mac and Linux. The game is inspired by Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, and Persona. The combat draws a lot from the battle system from Final Fantasy X but includes some puzzle elements to make it a bit more strategic."

Soul Saga Is Still Coming To Wii U

While it’s been nearly four years since the Kickstarter was fully funded, we’re still waiting on the Wii U port of Soul Saga. Unlike the majority of indie games though, Disastercake have said the game is still coming to the dying console.

3 Indie JRPGS To Look Out For

BagoGames: The JRPG genre has a bright future ahead with long anticipated games getting ever-so-close to releasing like Final Fantasy XV, Persona 5, and Kingdom Hearts III. However, independent developers who grew up with the classic J-RPG titles are filling the void left by the big publishers which have left us waiting for a good JRPG for so many years. Here are three indie JRPG's to look out for over the next few months/years.

So many subpar RPG's the last few years. Hoping the genre is about to get a major boost. Big fan of FF XV for sure. And indie's getting into the business? More power to them.

lockedongamer13286d ago

I agree with you. Most recent RPG's have been subpar, and if indies can generate new ideas while giving us a sense of nostalgia of what J-RPG's used to be like, that's great for the genre.

I've never been big on RPGs, but I've had a blast with South Park and Child of Light. Final Fantasy XV can't come soon enough. And Y2K and Earthlick look pretty great.

These three games look good, especially Soul Saga, and two are hitting Vita which is awesome (Get onboard the Vita train, Earthlock!). Weird how jRPG is now synonymous with Action RPG though. Kingdom Hearts and FFXV are Japanese, yes, but Action and Turn-Based is what really separates RPGs to me. A true jRPG isn't guns blazing FFXV. Action RPGs are fine, they can co-exist but don't lump them together.

All three of these games are targeted for Wii U as well, which is cool.

I want to see Lost Ark as a SP title rather than an MMO.

GrubsterBeater3286d ago

I want old-school RPGs like Suikoden, Grandia, and Chrono Trigger to come back. Hell, even a new Secret of Evermore would be nice. I just want RPGs to be like they used to...:

KryptoniteTail3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

Me too, man. RPG is one of the few genres getting worse with time, not better, each generation bringing more turds than gems. Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve, our glory days are behind us as we look forward to the rubbish our franchises became. FF is MMO and Action, Parasite Eve is a shooter, and Chrono doesn't even exist.

Why God.

GrubsterBeater3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

I agree 100 percent. What's funny is that my Super Nintendo and PS Vita (PSOne Classics) get more attention than my PS4. Hahaha. The only game I currently play on the PS4 is Bloodborne right now. I've been playing a lot of Suikoden II, Wild Arms, FF Tactics, Legend of Dragoon, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and FFVI. What happened to the golden age if RPGs..... :(

Ajoyshop3285d ago

Preach my friend haha. I know a lot of generations probably say their games or even music were better than the last. But ours were. The games you mentioned were my formative years. I look at what my nephew plays. All action games with limited stories and so much easier than what we had. I want to see a ff tactics 2 or (and I know this isn't RPG) a good resident evil game lol.

I want more RPGs like the ones we had on SNES and PSOne. Games that had that sense of magic and wonder, and you just immersed yourself for hours in a game that made you feel for the characters anf story. The types of games that you would finally beat with a sense of accomplishment, wishing you never played it so that you could play it all over again like it was the first time.

Soul Saga - PC Preview | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:

Soul Saga is a title that I came to find was important to me. It firstly has the honor of being the reason that I created a Kickstarter account to back it, and secondly of the backed projects it is the first that I've had the pleasure of being able to see something from.

Soul Saga is best described as “A love letter to J-RPG classics from the Playstation era like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Suikoden, and Persona” - which is currently within development by Disastercake’s lead Mike Gale who set out to do what some of us only dream of being able to do. Successfully backed with multiple tiers, Soul Saga has entered the start of its beta testing and I've had quite the pleasure of being able to play it thus far.

Awesome preview, wasn't sure I'd be a fan, still a little unsure.
