Opinion: Pre-ordered an Xbox One or PS4? You must be insane.

HeyUGuysGaming: ASDA revealed yesterday that pre-orders for the Xbox One have broken their record for “fastest selling pre-order console”. It’s not a surprise really when you factor in that just £20 can guarantee you one of the new machines at release – that is the same price as a portion of chicken chow mein, egg fried rice and vegetable spring rolls from the local chinese take-away.

ASDA aren’t the only ones taking pre-orders for next-generation technology either. Tesco, Zavvi, Amazon, ShopTo, Blockbuster & GAME are all taking orders for Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s new console and are quoting “unprecedented demand” for them.

Personally, I think all of these people pre-ordering either an Xbox One or PS4 at this early stage are insane.

There is something I don't understand about XboxOne TV connectivity. You still need a cable box connected to X1 in order to function!

That's like connecting a PS2 to BluRay Player so I can play BD discs from PS2!

Then you need a extra harddrive to play retail games (500GB is nothing if all games have to be put on it). The whole idea behind Xbox One is a total mess. Skype, gaming & internet searches on the same screen at the same time: Madness.

Something tells me there is a lot of things in life you don't understand. There is no Xbox one TV..... There is simplify an Xbox one overlay or user interface that works in conjunction with your cable. Stop being dramatic.... if you don't even want the Xbox one, why even waste your time talking about it?

With all of the unknowns and rumours, I went out and... Bought a WiiU.

No always online, no drm, no mandatory installs, already has decent exclusives, nice community features,controls my tv in a non douchy way, lets me play mario on the loo and cheaper than the ps4 and xb1 will be at launch no doubt.

Seems the best bet a the mo. Once Sony clear up all the unknowns about the ps4 (especially the price) i might preorder one. Not getting an xb1. just no.

I pre-ordered PS4 on Amazon. I figure I can cancel it any time before it ships if I decide that I don't want it, otherwise the pre-order guarantees that I get the console at the lowest price they list it between now and the release.

I saved 33% on my Wii U Deluxe last year by pre-ordering on Amazon. :)

It's available for pre-order on Amazon UK. I guess Amazon US didn't make it available for pre-order yet.

I know enough about the PS4 to know I want one. As long as it comes in at under £400 ($600), I'm not going to think twice about it. I pre-ordered in April, hopefully that was early enough to get one on release day.I've only ever sold one game (SSX, I got it with my PS2 and didn't like it one bit). I do buy second hand games but if there is some form of second-hand game DRM, it won't bother me too much. There's already a number of free-to-play games at launch, killzone and driveclub will keep me happy for a while. I really don't think I'm insane!

I ordered my PS4 for good old ShopTo a few months back, they were allowing pre orders within a day or two of the announcement.

For me its a no brainer, I have had every iteration of the PlayStation on day 1 and have never regretted it.

When I think back to how much I loved Motorstorm its makes me misty eyed :)

What's astonish me is how they manage to lump the ps4 into that opinion .

We still know little about the xbox one , so i can understand telling someone to avoid pre ordering (and no i'm only using that simple fact for the argument at hands , recriminations about features and what not are something else ) .

However if you are already interested and getting the confirmed launch list of titles for the ps4 thus far , where is the harm ?

Why pretend both have the same issues and are equals in announces thus far ? One has a slur of confirmed launch games , one does not yet . Your interest in those , and potential passion for upcoming exclusives sequels and new ip will drive the final nail

Where is the harm? Well, you still don't know the price of the actual console, nor the price of the games, nor how the pre-owned situation is going to be exactly, nor which retailer will offer the best deal. It's stupid to pre-order one now when most of the points I've mentioned above will probably be cleared up in a weeks time and I don't see the consoles selling out within this period.

You know very well those games are going to be within the usual ranges seen currently , and that the ps4 wont cost as much as the ps3 did at launch . Nor will MS go crazy in prices . You also know both made a point of controlling hardware manufacturing cost this time around

Those points are moot and irrelevant for someone convinced the games he'll get at launch are good enough .

I doubt those people fear them selling out that much , it's just a point for them to invest while they feel it's easy for them , and having not to think about release dates and whatnot .

I think it's premature to pre-order anything till E3. I feel like we saw just the tip of the ice burg from both Sony and MS and E3 will be the games, which to me is the most important.

Also, those pre-ordering would commit themselves to ordering from a particular retailer when another retailer can easily offer a better deal. Really don't see the point in pre-ordering consoles at this point.

I dunno how it works everywhere else , but at the local stores , you'd either get refunds or store credit .

I doubt many would bother pre order at a place they usually dont shop at , so the deposit would still ends up on games for some people

I agree. I think that a preorder before all the information is a little idiotic.

Truth of the matter is they both have information that needs to be explained and price points. E3 is right around the corner so you can wait to order after that.

You wouldn't buy a product without all the information because you are bound to be disappointed without all the detail.

Until both Sony and MS has a bill of materials for what you get and what games are available I am waiting.

Too many times both of these companies have made promises only to backtrack them...

Alan Wake, Gears of War 3, Last Guardian, Killzone 2, Last of Us, Beyond...

All games that were announced and then had their ship dates moved...

It's just a pre-order and lots of places require zero deposit. Its win/win, if you still want it nearer the time your high up the queue and if you no longer want it then you withdraw the pre order.
