Edge Magazine gives The Last of Us 10/10

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us seems to be a hit with critics according to reviews which are starting to appear. Although the embargo doesn't break fully until tomorrow (when you'll be able to read our own review), scores are already looking good.

First up to review the game was Empire magazine, which called the title "a masterpiece," scoring it 5/5 in its overall summary. Next up was the Official PlayStation Magazine, which again offered up a perfect score. Perhaps the biggest surprise though is the latest score, which comes via a pre-roll advert from Edge Magazine, with the score being revealed as 10/10, making it only the 15th game in the magazines history to get full marks.

As we say, our review will arrive tomorrow once the embargo ends. But it's fair to say that you probably won't be disappointed.

I knew from the earliest days that The Last of Us would be something special.

Naughty Dog have created some of the finest games of all time. They are a huge feather in Sony's cap. The PS4 is an automatic must-buy just because that will be the only place to play Naughty Dog's games (although there are plenty of other great reasons as well).

And you must be a 12 year old child to believe that GTA 4 or 5, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, or Modern Warfare are not considered to be GOTG! Generation titles define a genre and as much as you hate to admit it, Modern Warfare changed the FPS genre and control scheme. COPYCAT CENTRAL was the result. Even games that didn't have the control scheme reverted to it because fans complained. I wouldn't give it GOTY either until GTA5 gets released in September, so I think you better go sit down somewhere

Edge gave DmC an 8. This discussion is irrelevant.

How good this game is will depend on your own opinion. Some reviewers may not like the game in the future, so this isn't even an indication that the metacritic score will be high.

However, being one of 15 games to get a 10 from Edge is most likely a sign that this is a very well made game, advanced review or not. It's not something easily dismissed.

Whether it's the game of the year (or more) remains to be seen, but it doesn't look like it's going to disappoint those looking forward to it with realistic expectations.

Not even slightly surprised, the real test though is how much will it sell, lots of games get great scores but sell awfully. I know ND is a big name in the industry now but this is still a new IP, I'm getting it day one and I'm sure quite a number of people here are the same but how that translates to sales numbers will be what really decides if its viable for ND to go away from Uncharted.

I believe it will sell as much or close to UC3 numbers which will be truly impressive.

I understand that it is a new IP, but I think that it will sell really well. A lot of factors are playing out well for it...

1. The announcement was made at the right time - this wasn't one of those games announced three or four years before release. There was just enough time to build up a great level of hype amongst gamers, particularly the Naughty Dog faithful, while still not making it too short as if to make it seem rushed.

2. Sony is marketing it well - the demo was featured in a high profile, yet completely different genre game (GOW:A). Even though it was delayed, it assured more exposure to people who didn't normally play this type of game. There are banners on a lot of the major gaming sites. There are commercials, both on TV and as pre-video ads on YouTube. Sony is clearly putting an unprecedented (for Sony) level of advertising support for this game. As it should.

3. Reviews - three announced, three perfect. This happens sometimes, but the Edge 10/10 is something different entirely. Any savvy gamer who follows reviews and online discussions will take note of this, given the stinginess of Edge to give out a perfect score.

4. Pedigree - People who have played Naughty Dog's previous efforts are aware of the quality experiences that their games turn out to be. This game is on the radar of anybody who has played Uncharted, if for no other reasons than to see how much further ND can push the PS3 and gaming in general.

5. Genre Timing - The End of the World is big business these days. Zombie and other apocalyptic scenarios in media are at a level of popularity higher than ever seen. The Walking Dead is huge. People are psyched over the upcoming This is the End. While they aren't technically zombies in TLOU, the zombie feeling is there, and the apocalypse is a major theme in the game. It is, quite clearly, the right time for this game.

I think sales will be excellent for all of these reasons. I cannot wait to play it.

I hate to play devil's advocate, but consider this for a second. What if Sony gave this game to magazines and companies that they were fairly certain would give them an extremely high score. I believe the Last of Us will be a great game, but i'm not so sure it is the "perfect" game, I mean every game has flaws. If you were able to perhaps read the problems they had with those 'top 30' PS3 exclusives and find fallacies in their reasoning, then I'm more than inclined to agree with you.

Did you even look at the codemaster game scores compared to the average? How is it that the harshest reviewers on the planet score CM games higher or on par with the average. Uk dev bias which they also applied to sonys wipeout, formally Psygnosis. As a euphemism I would suggest they're just 'looking out for their own' ....in reality that's strait bias.

One of edge's strangest reviews was for crackdown 2. .Blatant expansion pack dressed up as retail, same map as the original, same this same that, shorter game....8. ....its the same old tricks. One game has a 'tried and tested formula...not broke dont fix' attitude applied, whereas the other has the 'unoriginal or has nothing innovative about it' attitude applied. What I'm saying is their wording means nothing if they aren't consistent across the board and the 'outdated' data shows a worrying pattern. There will be games that don't match what I'm implying but the majority do.

It shows a scoring pattern between 360/PS3 start and 2010...for a magazine that's been going for almost 20 years. We're taking a chunk of time in which anti-PS bias wasn't hinted at until this generation came around. Why not have an updated version between then (2010) to now (including TLoU) to see if there's been some upward flow in their grades for Sony games that can pinpoint some sort of reason why lower scores were happening often? It's not like I'm asking for a written statement by them admitting radical partiality against Sony; I'm reasonable. All I'd like to see is fairness when it comes to this debate, not random charts somehow becoming definitive proof that a magazine's out to get those PS fans.

I can't really speak as to why they scored Codemasters' games high or Crackdown 2 and still don't see the reason why. One's an anecdote to this 360 vs PS3 scores on EDGE and the other speaking about nationality bias, which I didn't even contend in the first place.

So now we're graphing the difference between impartiality and causation? That doesn't make much sense or address my point. I'm not speculating the Edge staff (would be nice if singular names were given) is without biases. I'm just saying instead of this "look at the chart" mentality, we dive into what their text says behind the score to see what influences them. By comparison, Sony-published titles this gen do have a relatively much more invested focus on cutscene-heavy, storytelling stuff (they have more than that but you get the point). Do they find that to be a problem in some way? Maybe certain games not having as much value? Something else?

I'm not arguing that creating said chart wasn't to be unexpected, or fruitless for that matter. What I'm getting after is what their bias is STEMMING from. After two whole generations, handing out one of their 5 10/10 scores to GT, there's not hubbub regarding their PS bias. Now, we keep stacking speculation upon speculation to make sure their name is slandered as being 'anti-Sony' without even reading the text. LBP gets a 10/10?...well those uk devs get it easy from them. Last of US 10/10? Well...it IS Naughty Dog after all.

We see some dichotomous examples of PS3's top 30 exclusives in comparison to everything else out there. Why not question if said differences in look, gameplay, etc. ticks them off?

It's not Sony, or Microsoft, it Future/Backbone Publications... So the term official means they only review games that release on the platform, with zero coverage of a rival platform. Sony or MS has no hand in what they score.

OPM has given poor scores to ps3 exclusives, as well as OXM to Xbox 360 exclusives. They are as reputable as any other mainstream media publication outlet on the web or magazine.

Edge giving TLOU 10/10 is a major shock to me personally. These guys are notorious for their harsh reviews so this bodes well for ND.

Game of the Generation? It may very well be. Naughty Dog deserves so much respect from gamers. They are still yet to release something mediocre.

My preorder goes in as soon as i get my next check. Can't be sitting around wondering why i missed out on this masterpiece.

It's amazing cause Edge is super stingy about giving a perfect score. According to the link, this would be the 15th perfect score in their magazine's history. Because they rarely give out such a score unlike other sites, a 10/10 actually had weight

Other than the Halo games (I think they are really good but not 10/10 good), Rock Band (not my thing) and Bayonetta (wayyy overrated game), I agree with the list. Maybe Skyward Sword as I found I didn't have the zeal to finish it which is a negative for me, but I was wrong before when I complained that it was just another Zelda game, its a lot of fun to play.

You can see from the list that EDGE 10/10 emphasizes gameplay, not necessarily story (This is why even games like Bioshock are absent)
And the things is: Halo 1/3, Bayonetta, and Rock Band all pretty much 1-upped by a high mile the gameplay in their respective genre (be it FPS, H&S or Rhythm) and provided the best gameplay experience you could get at the time. You may not like the genre, you may not like the specific game settings - but it's hard to argue with amazing gameplay experience.

Glad to see TLOU joining this highly respectible list. Bioshock Infinte + TLOU + GTA V + new console generation in the same year already makes 2013 one of the best years for gaming.

Halo CE was a game changer and Halo 3 was just a pure and complete package that set a standard for online fps' for this gen.

Opinions are fine but it's often so much more than that. The one about Bayonetta being way overrated will leave many not taking you very seriously though as that game will be the standard for which the genre is measured- as far as actual combat mechanics. Halo1 is still very much the amazing game too beating out the excellent yet not as spectacular sequels

You have to remember that Halo 3 was awarded with 10/10 BEFORE COD4 came out with the MP leveling system.

And even then, COD4 never came close to the replayability which Halo 3 offered back then: Single player campaign which can be played again with up to 4 people online and introducing scoring modes, highly tweaked multiplayer which allows people to create new game modes and share them with others with a click of a button, Forge mode giving people creativity freedom in making new maps to complement the multiplayer tweaking, and Theater mode giving you complete control over movies from your previous gameplay sessions (campaign and multiplayer), letting you inspect, analyze and share them online very easily with friends and the public. The amazing stats servers which Bungie put in place also complemented all of the above.

Halo 3 was as crammed with gameplay features as a game can get! It's been 6 years and COD still doesn't offer all of the above features - only a select few games this generation even get close to that offering. Bungie set a very high standard for gameplay this gen (so high that even Halo 4 from 343 actually took it down a notch), and while we're here talking about another amazing game one should recall that even Naugthy Dog themselves thanked Bungie in their game credits (in U2 I believe).

Its amazing that you're saying opinions are fine then bash me for not liking Bayonetta at all, I know quite a number of people who are with me, I own the game but never could get through half of it, not because it was difficult but because it was annoying.

Firstly and least importantly is the story, its garbage with horrible VO and while many will say it was meant to be like that I like a complete package or at least an attempt at one so while story in these games take the seat waaay down in the back it was excruciatingly bad even in its genre.

Then there was the music, that disgusting "music", not quite sure what to call it, just game me a mild headache after 15 minutes of gameplay, it was so annoying to listen to but that one is more personal preference so its not really the main issue.

Then the ridiculous pink flowers and color palette that made my mild headache into a full blown migraine. I hated it, it just hurt my eyes so much. The graphics were good and enemy designs quite nice, but the environments and those damn flowerly looks along with the color killed it for me.

Finally we come to the combat, which is what is supposed to be all that matters in these kinds of games, and it does not disappoint, the combat was truly impressive, sublime, deep and lightning fast...but there was also the crappy camera angles that almost broke combat at certain points for me. I agree for combat alone it is close to a 10 but everything else left a bad taste in my mouth, it was one of those games I wanted hard to like but just couldn't and a game is the sum of its parts not just one thing.

I played the demo with the Pulse Elite headphones and it's awesome. As far as it being compatible with the PS4, I know the PS4 controller has a headphone jack on them and these headphones work with devices that have that Input, like the iPhone. The headphones are definitely worth the money, the sound quality is great.

Hmm but I heard that you cannot get 7.1 surround sound unless you're using it with its dongle. It should work with PS4 though, I cannot see why it wouldn't. The problem is I can't spend $150 if I'm not %100 sure :(

I'm sure this game is good- from the sound design to the graphics- but ALL the dialogue I've heard was so cheesy and cringey and Spielbergian. Not badly written, just really derivative and obligatory.

Not to mention this fascination with post-disaster / apocalypse that our culture is so obsessed with. It's pretty much been proven that our fascination with such a trope is a response to the expansion of liberal values- lots of people implicitly see such a thing as the onset of apocalypse- as the end of civilization- and so apocalypse fiction is like a rendering of those fears. Not to mention less psychological things like the threat of terror- a fear inculcated in us by the media. Terrorists attack us because of our "foreign policies" / ulterior oil motives in their countries. Not that those who commit acts of terror are righteous, but its the fact that the West paints their invention in the east so piously when really they're guided by purely economic motives. My point being that apocalyptic fiction is also a response to this- the zombies or infected being like the "savages" of so long ago- the threat at the borders of our "stable" civilzed settlements which define themselves by erasing and exploiting those "savages". The white male has to fight alone to defeat them- trusting no one around him because of his paranoid ideology, which mirrors the values of the American Dream: He's paranoid because his wealth and fortune are threatened by the competition, who must be rendered as savages and monsters to justify him eliminating them. Not only this, but their liberalism threatens the continuation of his family legacy through potential homosexuality. These things aren't necessarily consciously done, they're just how we respond to historical facts- by creating and disseminating, not necessarily consciously, art and myth into the culture based largley on subliminal psychological reponse.

The only apocalyptic fiction worth reading / watching is Cormac McCarthy's The Road. It's pretty much a critique of most apocalyptic fiction. This game looks to add to the continuing canon of politically dodgy apocalyptic-fiction, but I guess we'll see.

I really think you've got the wrong end of the stick if you're claiming post apocalyptic fiction is some kind of white male power fantasy about the triumph of order and traditional values over the savagery of liberalism. If this were true the biggest fans of post-apocalyptic fiction would be the die-hard family values types who only listen to the most patriotic country music. I think you'll find in practice fans of this kind of fiction tend to be the type with nose rings and Dead kennedys posters on their walls. If there's a complaint to be made about post-apocalyptic fiction it's that it tends to be a selfish fantasy for those who are liberal almost to the point of anarchy. A fantasy about what might be possible if all of the traditional inequalities of society were removed and people were to be judged by their wits and nothing more.

Still, at the end of the day it's escapism either way and if you find yourself unable to enjoy this game for the reasons stated here you might just want to lighten up a little.

This is why Ive hardly touched my PC, even though it is more adequate then my 360 or PS3, just prefer playing multiplatform games on the 360 compared to my PC.

As for FPS, when i first picked up up a gamepad, I would agree better on PC due to mouse+keyboard, but now, I just could never go back.

Once you get over that learning curve of aiming with a gamepad, nothing feels more rewarding and immersive.

I used my 360 controller when I played BF3 on my PC and I was usually always in the TOP 5 during the match.

Once you get use to it, aiming with a gamepad can come pretty close to aiming with a mouse, but with the added reward and immersion.

Uncharted and The Last of Us is different from any XBOX or PC games because Naughty Dog focus or emphasize more on people's emotion/reaction/suspense/thri ll/dialogue with susbtance/nice plot story/excellent cut scene/interaction with your surroundings while playing an adventure game.

Because other games just do eye candy explosions, HD graphics with the same gameplay and heavy advertisement and that's it! Not Naughty Dog.

So this is my honest opinion AFTER playing the demo (got access to it via GOD of war)....It really didn't WOW me.

Yes I loved all the Uncharted's and I think ND has offered th best series this generation in terms of consoles, but honestly this demo did not do it for me.

Maybe I am not really into the suspense games anymore. Morever I felt the graphics in this game felt very grainy compared to Uncharted series.

Really not sure if I should keep my pre-order, but then again I am only paying 40 dollars from bestbuy (got special coupon not so long ago)
