AMD Readies FX-9000 High-Performance CPU Clocked at 5 GHz

Both processors would be based on the x86 Piledriver architecture which may not spark interest among the PC crowd but its not the architecture that’s astonishing about the new processors, its their clock speeds. AMD’s FX-9000 which is a FX CPU refresh is aiming to push the clock speeds at 4.8 GHz base and 5.0 GHz Turbo core clock which is a record native frequency for any processor ever released. The FX-9000 still has 8 Piledriver modules and 8 MB of L3 cache, its compatible with the AM3+ socket and will support 1866 MHz+ memory. Another change is the TDP, the FX-9000 is probably gonna get a trophy for its massive 220W TDP which compared to the SB-E Intel processors is quiet high and would require some massive cooling solutions just to let the heat off.

Haswell has been less than stellar. AMD really needs to take advantage of this.

If by less than stellar you mean 'beats the pants off the FX-8350' it sure has.

A clock increase on an inferior AMD architecture is reminiscent of the days when Intel desperately did the same to their Pentium 4's....right down to the ludicrous heat and utterly preposterous power consumption.

220 watts is hilarious for a CPU. Haswell would probably be just as fast for less than half the power draw...

I just read some of the benchmarks and tdp reports at ober 200watts. Not too over clock friendly as my sandy bridge. I might go with sandy e instead and go for water cooling so i can push it to 4.8 stable. I didnt mean to make it look as if I thought this was better or not. I just want Amd to put out a competitive product that would force Intel to get out of the lazy boy chair and put something out as amazing as the i7 2700k i now have in my case.

Haswell seems lacklustre compared to sandy, ivy bridge. i guess i can skip cou uograde for kow, go for the gtx800 series and slap in a 500gig ssd and call it a day. I have a lot of tweaking to do this week. Gonna have this rig, for the most part, for more years to come. Edit: im going to leave the spelling errors. Its a Hassel correcting from a touch phone, especially when the browser keepw scrolling to the top for no reason. '-'

This is fantasy unless AMD are shipping CPU's with throttling as standard now, good luck finding a motherboard that will cope with 220W TDP without throttling under heavy load, you'd need water cooled VRM's.

Okay, I love AMD, but I'm gonna try to drop some logic here...

First off, this sounds a lot like the rumor that was going around a few months ago about AMD supposedly releasing a Bulldozer-based CPU that would be called the "Centurion" and be clocked at 5 GHz right out the box. It wasn't stated whether it would be based on Piledriver or Steamroller (though Piledriver is most likely) or how many modules/cores it would have, though most likely it'd be 4 modules/8 cores.

Going off that, and the fact that the "reports" at the time stated it would be a very limited edition series, made it obvious that if this were real, they were nothing more than 8350's which were very delicately cherry-picked. But then if the 8320 and 8350 can already OC fairly easily to 5.0Ghz, then what's the point, and how could they justify the $700+ price tag?

I then did some more research and a very reputable overclocker said that most likely, the reports were just bogus. But now we have this... AMD did state many months ago that there would be a Piledriver refresh around this time (Richland APU's will use Piledriver 2.0 cores, and I guess these newer FX chips will as well).

That said, this new report seems like nonsense tbh. I was under the impression that Piledriver 2.0, much like has already been demonstrated with the Richland APU's, would have less power usage, better thermals, so how would these supposed new FX chips have almost double the TDP of the 8350? And even the naming of the supposed high-end CPU is stupid because it's called the FX-9000, which breaks the mold with their current names (FX 4xxx is quad cores, FX 6xxx is hexacore, etc.). The first digit denotes the number of cores, the second digit denotes which phase of the architecture (1 for Zambezi, 3 for Vishera, most likely a 5 will be Steamroller), so once again the two supposed new processor names aren't even accurate. This is definitely a bogus report.

Seems like complete nonsense to me. Besides, I'm more ready for Steamroller, which will finally address the main problems with the Bulldozer designs: single-core execution, giving each core in a module their own decoders, floating point improvements, shortening pipelines, overall efficiency improvements, etc.

Intel may the king of single core performance, but AMD has cost locked down to a science. Awaiting benchmarks and see how stacks against Haswell

I mean, with both ps4 and xboxone having 1.6 ghz cpus, that is going to be a huge bottleneck for the next 8 years

they have been lately, the 8350 performs favorably against the 3570k and 3770k in most areas and even out performs them in a few, however the ipc (single thread) is one area where it still falls a bit behind.

not to mention with their gpus, once they fixed the drivers they pushed the hd 7 series up to and a little beyond the gtx 6 series.

I think the cash influx from sony, nintendo and microsoft has definitely helped amd so far. just speculation though.
