With the next console generation looming, a look at some of the highlights from the current generation of titles.
This week, Insomniac's Resistance trilogy.
Great trilogies keep the same formula that made the series significant in the first place, while the sequels build on that success with bold adaptions to addictive gameplay, memorable characters and visual enhancements.
The PlayStation 3 had a lot of great franchises however one of the best was Insomniac's Resistance franchise. The studio's first attempt at a first-person shooter launched alongside the PS3 and was one of the system's best series. With 3 core games as 2 handheld games released on the PSP and PS Vita Resistance ended on a high note with Resistance 3. The series may have ended but it's still one of Sony's best IPs.
Wouldn't it be cool is Resistance copied the Gears of War TPS mechanics. Gears of War has no competition and Resistance needs be reinvigorated. Even Kill Zone could be created in a Gears of War type hybrid engine
I'd rather see The Order 1887 combat Gears. But it would have to be quite a bit better than the first game.
Resistance and KZ there are nothing to do with Gears. Maybe The Order.
I miss those games...Re2 was one of the games that got me hooked on MP last gen, that and KZ2 MP. A Resistance trilogy remaster would be awesome.
Tps all the way for me. I don't think gears is still a reference though.
Man no one wants that I played and beat both and in my opinion resistance is hands over fist the better game the single player had a way better story I will give gears the multiplayer I am a single player gamer so I don’t give a crap about multiplayer
Clocked like the third most hours in a game in Resistance fall of man, but we don’t need that trash to be remastered. Shooters don’t need to be remastered.
I went back and played it again on PS3, it still holds up in terms of creating a great atmosphere. The presentation of the story is very well done.
If they're going to do a resistance then they should just make a new one, screw the remasters.

and a new one would be awesome to have with the coop fun and 60player mp if i remember correctly
co-op in the 2nd game and KZ2 MP are my best memories of ps3 online FPS games. Till this day i truly believe resistance 3 failed because for some weird reason it didn't include the 8 player co-op which was one of the most played game modes in resistance 2. Insomniac has grown a lot as a studio and i would love to see a complete remake of the original like ratchet and clank style than for sequel go in any directions
The MP in the first one was up there with KZ2 MP.
But Warhawk trumped every MP game ever.
so based off what you're saying.... no one wanted the wiiu or xbone or nokia phones or near on any xbox game this gen due to how poorly they are doing? am i correct or did you mean something else?
No one wanted the WiiU, that is correct. Xbox One is selling about as good as the 360 did, so that logic is out. Nokia phones coming out after 2010, no one wanted. Where are they now?
I'd still like to see a remake of the first game with expanded lore then the series go in a different direction for the sequel...Resistance Fall of Man II with Nathan Hale being a fully developed character for the entire new trilogy.
Id like something along the lines of this to, though i do feel that 3 is where the 2nd game should have gone in terms of story. The guns are all cool (insomniac has always been good with weapons), i just IMO that the human race should never be able to comprehend the chimera tech, and have it be an ongoing struggle, old versus new. The 1st game nailed that feel, as did the third game. The 2nd game though had the best co-op
Its crazy how good the multiplayer was for the first game with the whole matchmaking system, friends list, clan system/battles ect ect. I would really love to see the features in the multiplayer to return back from 1.
Yeah for me Resistance 3 was fantastic but the only thing holding it back was the fact Joseph Capelli, who you take control of had hardly any development in the other two games so the ending of "winning the fight" didn't feel very compelling. However if they stuck with Nathan Hale and developed him better, giving him a good backstory and the like then I think I would have been satisfied more. Kind of shame they called him Nathan aswell considering at the time NaughtyDog had Uncharted with Nathan Drake...maybe a name change? Wouldn't mind it to be honest. Nicholas Hale? Nolan Hale? Who knows.
Personally I think they ruined Hale giving him the Chimeran Virus, it shouldn't have really been a huge plot point in my opinion, they got too into it with government programs and the like instead of just letting Nathan Hale be some lucky guy who managed to resist the virus by good genes. Then you had the small time skip and giving him a special team with other soldiers to lead. I kind of liked the "man against the world" feel from the first game. The family story they gave Joseph in the third game could probably be incorporated in with Nathan Hale someway if they ever do the re-telling, at least a wife...maybe give it a "War of the Worlds" vibe with her being like Carrie in that story, the woman he tries to find.
I just think they need to go back to what made the first game so great and take the best from Resistance 2 and 3. I loved that they went back to med kits in the third game and tried to fix their mistakes from the second, felt like an old school shooter considering this was the time when COD hit popularity.
Remake-Retell the first game
Develop Nathan more...maybe a name change
Keep the great multiplayer without all the gimmicks you see these days
Maybe some co-op with the other player being a non story character like what Halo used to do
Add to the lore
Change the ending a little to set up better future games

Third game ends with Nathan ending up on their home world taking fight to them for future trilogy.
Well sadly I think he's a product of the era... Last gen was characterized by bland protagonists with only a few exceptions...
The Resistance games were not amazing. I played 1 and 2 back in the PS3 era, and it just felt like it was missing something to set it up to top tier level. The game felt like a score of an 8.
FOM and Retribution remastered with their online restored would be great.
I'm not bothered about the others as they didn't feel like Resistance games, although 3 was a huge step up from 2.

One of those was, of course, Gears of War. The other was Resistance: Fall of Man. Developed by Insomniac Games exclusively for the PlayStation 3, Resistance: Fall of Man featured a pocket of humanity fighting an unknown entity known as the Chimera. Both games launched November 2006, their sequels in November 2008 and their trilogy-ending titles in September 2011.
while i mostly like PS titles ...Resistance was complete trash in comparison to Gears , i hope the series( Resistance ) is dead for good
Man since games with huge monster rosters like Resident Evil and the Turok trilogy are my absolute favourite types of games. I used to love when a new Gears came out because typically a Resistance game would come out at the same time. I understand that Resistance wasn't a top-tier shooter but I could ignore some of its bare bones shooting mechanics for its interesting stories enemy variety.
No not really resistance 2 was one of the best game I have play the MP was great as well. This is coming from some who own a lot of game from ps platform- pc. Resistance 1 was a hit and miss for me though
Resistance 2 MP was so damn good.
What I loved about the first was the ridiculousness of how many weapons you could actually hold.

you don't know what you are talking about, while the single player story in resistance went more of traditonal fps route it was the MP that stole the show
8 player co-op was so much fun to this day i don't understand why one of the most played mode was left out of resistance 3
and i hope insomniac/sony do a complete reboot and keep the things that worked and make improvements in other areas
i am a ps4 fan but gears of war 4 looks awesome(i might just buy an xbox one slim)just to play it because that's how much fun it looks. i just don't like/want to pay for psn and xblive
I was both a ps3 and 360 owner and both series had their strengths. I enjoyed the cover and shoot mechanics in the Gears series and loved the overall story. Some of the dog fights were outstanding in resistance and I thought Resistance 3 was one of the best fps campaigns I've ever played.
GoW 4 would definitely be worth picking up a xbox one. I would love to see the continued stories of resistance as well.
Gears 4 is great and as usual Horde mode makes for some of the best drinking games.
The Coop in Resistance 2 was a blast. Some of those bosses were a beast and when they went down there was such a feeling of accomplishment. Campaign Coop in Resistance 3 was quite memorable.

Resistance was one of the best titles on PS4. I actually loved it. Heck I am dying for more resistance PS4 lineup seriously needs a shooter of this calibur.
Resistance was much better in terms of campaign and story, its a shame it has gone quiet.
I dont think Resistance was a trash game like that guy's top comment was but It was not better than the orginal gears of war triologoy and gears is much more iconic to the gaming industry and had a bigger impact on it.
I didnt mind resistance and a reboot would be good. But i don't think it's in the same league as gears of war. At the end of the day though it is personal opinion and there will definitely be people who preferred resistance over gears.
But Resistance is a FPS and Gear of war is a 3PS, that's like saying madden is the closest well get to Nba live
Would people rather have Resistance 4 where they come up with some new (and in my opinion) forced way to further the story OR would people rather see Resistance Fall of Man 2 which starts a new timeline and you continue to play as Nathan Hale who gets a better voice actor and development. No killing him off or whatever.
Because using a [gimmick] parallel timeline just to rewrite what actually happened, isn't any more forced than continuing the story..
Why would it be. Forcing in them returning is a slap to the face of the ending in the third game

Three tried to do that IMO, and IMO it suceeded in a sense of bring back the feel of the original game.
Nathan Hale doesnt need to return, he was your standard military character
Which is why I thought Fall of Man 2 could have given him some better development. Add onto his backstory, make him less like a military character and more like an everyday man.
It's their story and the canvas for this would be completely blank.
The third one wrapped everything up nicely...doing another would ruin that in my opinion but an alternative timeline would let the franchise go on.
Give us Fall of Man 2 where Nathan tries to win the fight and then in Fall of Man 3 he wakes up on their world and must fight his way back home before the second assault.
How about following a new character during the same time frame? Maybe a different front kicking some more chimera ass.

I didn't hate it, I just expected Fall of Man 2 and what we got seemed like something completely different. Good but not a good sequel.
However Resistance 3 was fantastic although Resistance 2 still held it back.
Resistance was a good IP, just wasn't quite consistent enough IMO. Overall, I would say that the Resistance franchise is a memorable one, definitely worth mentioning as one of the high points of gaming.
Fun times had with all 3 games.
I think Sony should continue this franchise and encourage Insomniac to make part 4.
Insomniac will soon regret their decision to go multiplatform, and seeing the Xbox One, even more so. The Resistance games were fun, good story, memorable characters. I personally loved the first one, I still play it today, it was the first game I've played on my PS3.
Insomniac was a good developer but lately they been putting out bad games
I find it strange that fuse is coming out in 4 days and we have yet to see any hype or excirement from gamers and gaming sites.
