PS3 firmware 2.20 bringing BD-Live interactive Blu-ray this month

The Blu-ray 2.0 spec (or BD-Live) is just days from launch. Sony just announced that the next PlayStation3 firmware updated -- v2.20 -- will add the new interactive features to your PS3. As such, PS3 owners should expect downloadable video content, ringtones, interactive movie-based games, and the always intriguing "more" when the software is released in "late March." In other words, in the next 11 days. The update will also allow you to copy photos and music playlists over USB from your PS3 to your PSP. The rest of the new features after the break.

-- "Resume play" will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc
and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been
removed.(*1)
-- "Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP
to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
-- PS3 system's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly
linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's
view speed will be improved.
-- DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
-- "Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the
control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback.(*2)

What an awesome update.

Please don't complain about missing in-game XMB, Sony is working hard.

Lifendz5874d ago

that's why I get Sony consoles. They listen to what the consumer wants and tries to provide it. I'm only a bit bitter because they had those shirts making fun of the situation at GDC and now here we are and still no in-game xmb. I guess it'll be available when Home is-sometime this summer.

BTW, I don't even want it to listen to a custom soundtrack while playing Burnout. I want to get all of my friends together in COD4 and in-game would make that all the easier.

Finally a half decent update. All those stability ones I never really noticed a difference. I didn't have any stability problems. This update has some meat to it.

i like this:

-- PS3 system's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly
linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's
view speed will be improved.

hopefully daily motion works!

I happy with it;) My Baby;)PS3 is getting better and better ;-P
It's a good (FREE) update;)

One thing I always love about PS3 firmware updates is that they don't always tell us everything that's included. And a lot of times that "extra" stuff is a big deal. It's almost as though you have experiment with it to find all the goodies!

Blu-Ray updates are always welcome, even thought i tend to just watch the movie and not all the extra's.

But most importantly is the browser spped, some of my mates use that as their only access to the net and it just a little to slow right now.

Keep those firmware updates coming :)

"PS3 system's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly

I have always said that ps3's browser should come more into focus.

"Resume play will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc
and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been
removed."

I didn't even think of this feature but now that i think about, it's a pretty damn good idea.

"DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable."
Those who were whining about this can stop now.

Awesome 2GB restriction has been lifted

6wl5874d ago

I'm hoping for > 4 gig file playback for MP4 files. At the moment, you cannot playback > 4 gig files even over DLNA - I can understand the limit being there for local files (as the file systems supported by the PS3 don't support > 4 gig files), but over a network its just insane.

Its the biggest pain thats stopping my PS3 becoming my media solution.

Good work. Looking forward to...everything actually.

Tales Of Graces Ƒ Retro Review – Holding Out For a Hero

Gary Green said: Namco Bandai heard the call of many fans asking for the PlayStation release of Tales of Graces which was originally released seemingly exclusively for the Wii back in 2009. If you’re acquainted with the Tales series then Graces f won’t be something entirely new to you, yet if you’re a newcomer then you’ll find a plethora of gameplay mechanics and nuances that distinguish this series from other JRPGs. While the game finds itself following the traditional archetype of JRPGs, such as a somewhat clichéd story, Graces has something to offer to both veterans and newcomers alike.

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil3d ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai3d ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing692d ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle2d ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal2d ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

DaReapa2d ago

No. Square Enix owns the IP.

Abnor_Mal2d ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing12d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
